The Programming Disputes Thread

Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal is demanding COMCAST and The Yes Network meet and "Kiss and Make-up".

He is grandstander No. 1. Remember all the press conferences he used to call as state attorney general, whining about unsafe toys and how Big Oil is gouging his state? Nothing was ever accomplished, other than him getting his face on the TV news and his words in the papers.

Viacom Warns That Its Networks May Go Dark On Dish Network

Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman told investors that there might be “hiccups” in his carriage renewal talks with Dish Network — and he was right.

The entertainment company’s shares are down about 5% today after it began to warn Dish’s satellite customers that it “has not engaged in a serious way to reach an agreement for Viacom’s number one family of cable networks, including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, VH1, MTV, BET, Spike, TV Land and CMT.”

Viacom calls this “par for the course for Dish” — adding that the programmer has “made every effort to negotiate a renewal…including granting multiple extensions.”

Although Viacom says it offered Dish financial terms “as good as larger distributors,” the No. 2 satellite company “made demands that are designed to be impossible to meet in order to take our negotiations public and likely force our programming off the air.”

i wonder if Dish will become the biggest provider to drop Viacom to date. i know several cable providers recently dumped Viacom for not providing anything worthy to keep while at the same time not worthy enough for a pay increase that kinda forced them to dump Viacom.

Dish CEO: ‘We Are Prepared’ to Drop Viacom Permanently

Dish CEO Charlie Ergen said his company was prepared to drop Viacom channels permanently if the satellite provider can’t reach a deal on fees with the programmer.

“We’re prepared to move on as Suddenlink and others have done without the content,” he said, speaking on a call with analysts to discuss quarterly results.

Pay-TV companies Suddenlink and Cable One have both opted to cease carrying Viacom channels, which include Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV.

The companies that have removed Viacom from their line-ups “have done just fine,” he said.

They have a deal. Here's the press release: ;)

NEW YORK and Englewood, Colo., April 21, 2016 – DISH Network L.L.C. and Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB and VIA) have agreed to terms for a multi-year contract renewal that provides DISH customers with uninterrupted access to Viacom networks and sets the stage for select Viacom live and Video-on-Demand content to join the Sling TV single- and multi-stream services. Details of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We appreciate Viacom’s willingness to continue with us on our journey as we work to deliver the best, most innovative television services available,” said Charlie Ergen, DISH chairman and CEO. “This creative, bold and consumer-friendly approach extends a nearly 20-year-old relationship.”

“Today’s agreement ensures Viacom’s number one family of networks will continue to be available to our millions of fans on DISH and underscores the value of our programming across platforms,” said Viacom Executive Chairman, President, and CEO Philippe Dauman. “DISH has historically been and remains an important partner for Viacom, and as part of our commitment to entertain audiences wherever they are, we are pleased to offer select Viacom networks as part of DISH’s Sling TV product. Today’s renewal, together with several additional affiliate agreements announced over the past year, will enable Viacom to drive growth and deliver better, more engaging viewer experiences for years to come.”

Viacom networks, including Comedy Central, BET, Spike, MTV, Nick Jr. and many others, will be available on Sling TV’s single-stream and multi-stream services in coming months. Specific packaging details were not announced.

The renewal applies to the 18 Viacom channels DISH currently carries, including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, Spike, BET, CMT, TV Land, Nick Jr., and Nicktoons.

Meredith, Charter Retrans Deadline Looms

Today, stations owned by Meredith began notifying their viewers that Charter Cable may drop the stations from its lineup after April 30. Meredith said: “By law, cable companies must negotiate in good faith with television stations before dropping a television station’s signal.” If Charter fails to reach an agreement, the Meredith stations’ programming will not be available on Charter systems after April 30.

Viacom Renews And Expands Carriage Deal With Cox Communications

Here’s some Viacom news that, for a change, doesn’t involve its battle with Sumner Redstone: The company said today it has renewed and expanded its carriage deal with Cox Communications.

The No. 3 cable provider, which has 6 million residential and commercial customers, has agreed to carry 22 Viacom channels plus Epix, its joint venture with MGM and Lionsgate.

Cox also will offer “an expanded selection” of programs via its on-demand platforms which serve TV and mobile devices.

The companies didn’t disclose financial details.

Forum Stations (WDAZ, WDAY, KMBY) gone from Directv as of 6/2
(KMCY is not carried on Directv as its a satellite of KBMY)

In the far western part of the market satellite subs are screwed as Forum no longer has ABC in Dickinson or Williston (they were on subchannels of the CBS there before Nexstar bought the CBS stations)

WREG Memphis as well as other Tribune stations and WGN America could be gone from Dish Network on June 13. Just saw the scroll while flipping through the Comcast channels.

Yes, they are owned by Tribune. The same annoying Dish Network dispute ads are running in Hartford/New Haven, via FOX of Hartford and CW of Waterbury/Hartford.

BTW, is there a reason why, in these types of disputes, it's never mentioned that most people can get them for free over-the-air with an antenna?

(Is it another type of revenue grab, such as re-transmission consent or whatever?)

Seeing the crawls on KCPQ, the Tribune owned station in Seattle. Since it's being superimposed over Sunday afternoon infomercials, it might not be as persuasive as they intended:)

Tribune Stations Off Dish In Retrans Dispute

http://www.broadcastingcable.com/news/currency/tribune-stations-dish-retrans-dispute/157235

Tribunes Media's TV stations were blacked out to Dish Networks subscribers Sunday evening in a dispute over retransmission consent payments.
Dish blamed Tribune's demands for higher fees for the stations, a well as for its cable network WGN America as the reason why a deal could not be reached.
“Tribune is demanding an unreasonable rate increase for channels that are available for free over the air,” said Warren Schlichting, Dish executive VP of programming. “Actions like Tribune’s are what drive price increases and feed customer frustration for our industry. With Dish free antenna, customers will continue to receive Tribune channels for free over the air, along with dozens of other broadcast channels not normally available to pay-TV customers.”

Dang Dish has been in so many contract disputes.
