The Quick & Buzz Battle

So, has all the shuffling around at Quick--switching frequencies, losing Chris & Jim, plugging in Classic Rock's Bob & Tom--opened the door enough to let WUBZ leap to the top of the State College rock pile? Has the (mostly) all-talk morning act killed their perception as a music station? Did the Quick audience follow them up the dial? Is Buzz now seen as the aggressive successor to the once-cool Quick? Is the Buzz music mix on target or is it playing too much alternative and not enough core rock material? Inquiring minds...

I think that the Buzz will gain some ground, but won't jump to the top of the heap immediatly. I've been impressed that QWK has been able to retain some personality. Valeri is still Valeri, Troy is still Troy. When compared to Rocky in Altoona, QWK stands out, especially when you consider that the two stations use the same library, with the same music in the same categories and probably the same clocks. With Tommy Edwards the notable exception, Rocky just sort of lays there.

I have always enjoyed the Buzz. For me, the music is mostly on target. I'd hate for them to drift too far toward core rock material. Chris & Jim are a big improvement over Laura Mack. I've said before, Jill Gleeson is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I think once they get moved into State College, market themselves more aggressively, and improve that city grade signal, they'll begin to show big improvements.

Keep in mind that Rocky is voice-tracked for a large part of the weekday (10-3).

Yes, but it's also live for a large part of the day. But voicetracking doesn't preclude having some personality and being entertaining. I think the cartoonish "Roger Healy" tries, but it isn't happening. The live afternoon guy has as much personality as a ham-loaf. Diggler does a good job at night, though. But from 10am-7pm, it's pretty flat.

I personaly really like the Roger Healy show. And he does use a good bit of show prep...in addition to his own commentary. But sometimes it is difficult when you work a full day elsewhere and then have to voice-track for 2 or 3 stations every night.

I just wish he'd lay off of the fake voice. Dial it down a little.
