The "Rafael Palmeiro " of the Payola charade

I liken the payola situation to that of the Steroids issue and Major League Baseball; a practice that's been going on, despite attempts to correct and eliminate it. Many sports pundits said the steroids law would not have any punch or credibility unless a 'heavy hitter' was brought in. This is also the case with the current payola settlements. That all changed when Rafael Palmeiro was caught with an illegal substance. This, despite his heated and passionate testimony denying any use or knowledge.

So, when I see that Michael Sanders has 'exited'.... we may have what the public is looking for....While it's not P-diddy or Jay-Z or Ryan Secreast, it is in the number 1 market in the country.
 
Good analogy.

However like pro sports, this is (a) the tip of the iceberg and (b) window dressing.

Easier to sacrifice a PD to the gods of the FCC, than to jeopardize a $100 million license in NY (or any market), let alone a $500 million cluster in market #1.

License or PD? Hmmmm. Alex, I'll take "PD" for 200, please.

Only one thing. How does a station, cluster, or group owner prove that it has entirely and sufficiently addressed the problem by firing only the PD?

What of the GM or OM?

A friend of mine who works in a top ten market is fond of saying "the fish rots from the head down." If the PD is skimming off the top, it's virtually impossible for an astute GM to not know what's going on, unless of course, the GM is flat-lining the EEG.

When a PD is found to be skimming off the top, cutting side-deals or blatantly taking unreported "gifts" in exchange for airplay or promotional considerations, how is the GM not complicit or equally bad, looking the other way?

These are critical and highly relevant questions that apply to a certain former CHR PD from Buffalo, the GMs and group that employed him. Perhaps it's one reason why the group in question has yet to hire a PD for its Buffalo CHR station. The vetting process alone is likely eliminating at least 50% of the potential applicants and candidates.

Would it surprise anybody if a new PD wasn't hired until after the first of the year or at least after the other shoe drops?

Don't expect to hear a word of that because not one of the culprits dares take the stand. What's more likely are these words, as spoken to their attorneys, "Damn! they have pictures and recordings of that?!" Followed after a few weeks by, "Can I supersize that for you?"</font>
