"the red mccarthy show"

Absolutely one of a kind!

Red McCarthy was the best showman the area had.

When he was on WCTX we used a Marty RPU to get the signal from his basement back over the hill to Palmyra. I used 20 feet of antenna mast so the signal would make it back.

Talk about photos, he had 8 x 10 photos (most of them black and white) of stars long since forgotton not only in the musical entertainment, but movies and TV as well.

There are 2 photos I remember, one is with his son Jimmy at about the age of 10 or 12 sitting on the knee of Tonto (Jay Silverheels) and there was also a picture of The Lone Ranger too!

Red was as serious and grascious a person you would ever want to become friends with. He treated my famiily and I to many events at Hershey! We saw the Ice Capades, The Zembo Circus, free entery into Hershey Park and more just for taking care of his show.

And Yes, I remeber his delivery style too! It would be considered Hoakey, backwards, old fashioned radio, but you know he kept an audience on whatever radio station he was on.

I remember the spots too, especially The Embers. When he was on WCTX there was a jingle that we were required to play and since Red had no way of playing the tape it was my job to play the spot back at the sutdio when red would call for it. So we set up a "cue line" and Red would chat about the Embers and he would go on and he would finally say "and we like to hear it this way!" (PLAY TAPE) You know in all the years he was on WCTX I only missed the cue once ... I was talking to Mr. Clinton at the time in his office and I made a mad dash down the hall and hit the button about 15 seconds late!

Yup Red McCarthy, he was truely one on a kind and there's never been another like him!
