the return of 99x

A one Lanny West/Mr. Fram is all over Facebook with his lunatic rantings with how awful it is too call this 99x. How Cumulus has no clue and is ruinging the heritage. Memo to Lanny - Leslie wasn't the end all, be all nor does she own the rights to 99x.

Her insistence to be an on-air presence long past her prime was part of the problem. She should have left the air when Barnes left. As fas as her behind the scene role, she was at the right place, right time. She was at the dawn of this era of 90's "Alternative". She helped create, mold and drive that genre and she deserve a lot of the credit for those nurturing years but she didn't invent the genre. The latter years she was just some pawn of consultants. The music died and as hard as she tried there was just no way to recapture that magic. Times changed and a fresh change was needed.

Perhaps Chris Williams was right for the direction he wanted to take it in. Project is not tearing the ratings up but it is doing a lot better than 99x was doing in the end. If Leslie was so great and so right why is her newest toy WRXP mired with lower ratings than 99x. I don't believe there is much measurable difference in the ratings since she arrived.

Good luck to the new 99x. I have already put on my preset. It will fill a nice niche but I don't suspect no matter who is running it nor what signal it is on could the glory days of 99x or Alternative music be re-created.

IYH feel free to bash away and have a drink on me to celebrate.

This is pretty cool....all us radio geeks are in our format-flip glory today.

The countdown clock is kinda creepy.

I caught the legal ID on 97.9 and it said WWWQ....wasn't that Rock's legal ID? Q is using WNNX, right? Is Rock getting new calls? I'm lost (as usual).

I thought the countdown clock was weird...reminded me of Pink Floyd (i.e., classic rock)--not 99X.

The legal id for 99X (on 99.7 HD-2) is WWWQ-HD2, since 99.7 is WWWQ. You should also hear the legal id for the translator (right?-not sure how that works). WNNX is 100.5 and has been since shortly after the 100.5 flip.

I thought playing bits from the Power99-->99X flip was way cool.

I'm eagerly awaiting someone to post the flip...

Ok, reception reports!!

Someone here in Woodstock said it was coming in well. A friend of mine in Acworth is reporting static-ky reception. What about all of you?

(I'm in Savannah, listening online).

No, they swapped them. 99.7 is WWWQ and 100.5 is still WNNX.

I live in Cumming and tuned to 97.9 when I got in the car at 6:15 this morning...the creepy countdown/24 clock had REALLY poor reception up there. Obviously, 99x won't be very easy to listen to up my way.

It's clear as day down by my work (Vinings), though. I was able to hear the launch very clearly.

I'm not sure they need to actually give the Translator Calls (W250BC). WWWQ-HD2 is the "Legal ID," although this is going to raise some questions (and perhaps finally give some much needed clarity) to how to appropriately ID an HD Multi-cast Channel. If the FCC is going to allow for HD Multicast Channels to be legitimate program sources for Translators, then they are going to have to Aurally give the Legal ID and not just rely on the visual display on an HD Receiver.

I know once a day the "parent" station has to give a rundown of all translators rebroadcasting the parent station...

Loud and clear in Tucker, Norcross and Duluth. I loved hearing the old 99X imaging. Wonder what Steve will play on the Retro-Plex?

Upon greater research, I find I am wrong (as I often am). Translators do need to identify their calls, but they do not fall under the same rules as Standard FM Stations. They only need to do it 3 times a day during certain ranges of time, OR they need to do it hourly via Morse Code (don't ask me why, as the FCC: http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2008/octqtr/47cfr74.1283.htm)

So theoretically, three times a day they must identify themselves as WWWQ-HD2 ATLANTA, W250BC RIVERDALE

In reference to what you said, RTibbs, the problem to me seemed to be that in the latter years, not only did it seem that they were grasping for the glory days of 99x, but they failed to really push contemporary alternative music. 99x, when I think about it now, was a glorified commercialized version of college radio. But it worked. If they could go forth with that same goal, then they might have something.

I say bring back the focus on the music....bring back a "retroplex" like program..locals only....organic X....Live X.

Failed to push it or the quality of the music wasn't there or wasn't being accepted. 99x wasn;t the only alternative station to hit it big in their market and has since gone by the wayside. I thinkt the musical tastes changed. and seemed to veer more towards hip-hop or pop musik. The Beat and Q100 hitting the scene after 99x's peak. Taste changed and made it very hard for the alternative format to stay current. They were so to speak left with the hanger-ons.
