the return of 99x

I was listening at Mall of Georgia today. I do know it reaches western Hall County, but haven't taken a trip to Gainesville to see how far into the county the signal travels. I should be in Forsyth County next week and can check the signal around 400. Again, it is almost the same signal strength as 100.5. I am impressed with the signal strength. At home in northern Gwinnett County, it is strong enough to hear at 98.2. Unfortunately, I noticed J 93.3 isn't as strong today as it usually is.

Why the need to hurt the signal for 97.9 by broadcasting it in HD. Isn't 99.7 HD2 still 99X so if you have an HD radio you can still get 99x as you have for 15 months.

I hate th new 99X! They suck. Will there be new99Xwatch.org starting up soon?

It's the same as it was when it was just 99x.com/HD. Who knows what they'll do. Funny that you mention the 99xwatch.com..I went to that site on Friday and there was a new post there.

I live in Hampton and for the most part, the signal is good, at least in my car it is. House isn't all that great...I've had to adjust the antenna upstairs some. No signal downstairs at all :( I did have an episode where i was driving THROUGH the thriving metropolis of Hampton and had some static but there's also an FAA office with towers and a couple of ATT towers in that area as well (don't know if that would have contributed any) then again, it may have just been the trees.

First good move they made...Organic X back on Sunday mornings.

;D

k i dont even know where to begin on this. good u a$holes at cumlus realized what a MAJOR mistake u made.

told
u
so

even bigger mistake is thinkin u can undo it. u said F U to all us 99x fans over a yr ago. u STILL dont get it. u cant just throw the songs back on the airwaves n like magic we all come back. the songs r decent but this ISNT 99x. 99x was always more then the music n its funny as hell u still didnt figure tht out. 99x on 97.9 WTF?

maybe i'd tune in if u had the balls to rename it n start over. 97x or somethin. but the fact u think u can make $ off the ashes of what u killed? cant be undone n u wont get my loyalty back. i moved on. the rare times i lsiten to the radio its on 96.1

i already downloaded most of what ur playin and unless u can go back in time and bring every1 back, bring back all the shows. house of retroplex, STEVE CRAIG, MORNING X everything, even then u'd still have to suck up to the thousands of us hat didnt mean shit to u a yr ago.
i got no use 4 u now.

Impression after listening for a few days> 99X = Dave with apparent male genitalia. Incubus, Smashing Pumpkins, Fray, Kings of Leon, Silverchair, etc.

I've been listening for the past few days and have to say, I really want to hate it, but I don't. It's sounding pretty good to me so far.

I have to agree, Richard Kimball. On my blog, i issued a challenge to Gary Lewis which went something like this:

Here’s my challenge to Gary Lewis, GM of 99x: reach out to the listeners and invite them to submit suggestions for new music and give them a listen…all suggestions of the same bands you currently play should be tossed in the can. Stay out of the safety zone. You want new music. You want side stage acts from the music festivals. You want stuff from artists 99x hasn't played in years (short of the one hit they had back in 1999). You want to introduce new genres to the market.

It's a shot in the dark on many levels, but holding on the the past didn't work for the station

As much as I'm disappointed in the overall nature of Alternative these days, 99X's return is definitely a net plus, and I'm spending far more time listening to it than I thought I would. They have even surprised me by playing some less-exposed 90's music in the afternoon drive shift. I haven't heard "Feed The Tree" by Belly or "6 Underground" by the Sneaker Pimps on terrestrial radio in a long time. I would still love to see them dramatically increase the percentage of new music and cast off most of the Active Rock, however.

I'm not necessarily complaining, but the new 99X is pretty much "corporate alternative." A slicked up re-branding of active rock with enough of the original 99X material to make it feel familiar. But as I pointed out earlier, nobody at Cumulus has the fortitude to do real alternative; after all, the company is in business to make money, even though it's proven itself to be pretty lousy at it lately, and taking chances is not in the playbook.

In reference to what you said, RTibbs, the problem to me seemed to be that in the latter years, not only did it seem that they were grasping for the glory days of 99x, but they failed to really push contemporary alternative music.

Failed to push it or the quality of the music wasn't there or wasn't being accepted. 99x wasn;t the only alternative station to hit it big in their market and has since gone by the wayside. I thinkt the musical tastes changed. and seemed to veer more towards hip-hop or pop musik. The Beat and Q100 hitting the scene after 99x's peak. Taste changed and made it very hard for the alternative format to stay current. They were so to speak left with the hanger-ons.

There was plenty of good "alternative" music out there when 99X bit the big one. They just weren't playing it. As someone else posted, they went the way of the pre-programmed consultant crap that they were convinced was going to save the genre. I hope they learned their lesson (if that's even possible) and go back to being "On the Edge". Where's Wil Pendarvis when you need him?

No I understand what you're saying. I think that for the most part, 99x.com in the past year or so has been better than it was the year prior. But i still think they need to go to the extent of listening to what even Sirius Alt-Nation is playing and experiment with that. Granted, I understand they're going to need to push the 90's alternative music they were responsible for introducing to Atlanta..and obviously the hits...but then we get into the whole discussion about record companies pushing this artist and that one and this single and this album.

I think that because 99x has been off the regular FM dial for a while, it needs to re-establish itself as an Alt-Rock station. Just using the old name and playing the standard Alt-Rock fare isn't good enough anymore.

Where's Wil Pendarvis when you need him?

They should be reading sean demary's blog o' chunky goodness.
