The Ride...what is it?

I think Mix 106.1 needs to upgrade their signal. Alot of areas it is still weak. That is probably why not everyone listens to them. Their variety is very good though and unique. Are they really still adult standards though?

I think they are doing about the best they can...Like many 80-90 Docket stations they were short spaced into an area that would not allow for anymore power or the ability to move closer to the market they have chosen to serve.

With the 106.1 in Wilson and the 106.1 in Jefferson it is unlikely they can move any closer to the QC...

I can't figure out how you perceive that much difference between Lite and K. While I agree that K is not all that exciting I don't see much difference between the two stations. As far as Delilah is concerned I can't stand her syrupy delivery. She also tends to go on and on..... talking much too slowly.

I disagree. WLYT is much more fresh than K lately. Sometimes, the Lite handle does not seem to fit as they sound borderline Hot AC. K is a true bore, light ac. As for 95.7..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! amfm, I do not know why you say that the Planet is creating a buzz. I have always known a lot of people who listen to it.

Jim,

I really think you have your stations confused... Look at the playlists online. K has the advantage if you want something more Hot ACish. Example: 1047 plays songs from Nickelback and Three Doors Down, two Hot AC core artists. Lite doesn't play anything from those groups. It also looks like K plays more recurrents than Lite and more songs from the 90s if you look at yes.com. Unless disco is what the Hot AC format is all about, I think you've flip flopped the two. They both play some Hot ACish stuff, but both are clearly ACs with K on the brighter side. Pull up the AC Chart. Natasha Bedingfield, Rob Thomas, Daughtry (which both Lite & K play), Carrie Underwood, are all on the mainstream AC chart. Hot AC is now leaning More Top 40 with Nelly Furtado, Gwen Stefani, and even Fergie plus much heavier rock records. There's nothing wrong with Lite, but it's clearly more 70's heavy & it's not even close to Hot AC. They are actually closer to a jammin' oldies at times than Hot ac with all the disco (Dazz band, Commodores, & Donna Summer).

I do agree with you on 95.7...what a waste of a signal.

Well, maybe they are getting away from 70's...a bit. Today I only listened 20 minutes and heard "I Can't Wait" by Nu Shooz and "Hold on Loosely" by .38 Special.

Back to The Ride for a moment...he's got to play a few hits now and then...so you're going to get a Skynyrd song once in a while. Just because The Fox burns em up doesn't mean people out there don't want to hear them. Maybe you should quit listening to Fox if they are burning out the music. Don't blame another station for Clear Channel's sins. Regular folks don't pigeonhole what they like; they like what they like and that's that. They don't sit and ask themselves why the radio station plays a lot of different stuff, and they don't think one station can't play a song because another does. It seems to me that The Ride is made for actual folks, not radio people.

As for the deep stuff...I don't know about you, but I like to hear a song I don't know by heart once in a while. I like Top 40, I like R&B old school from the 60s and 70s, and I like "underground" deep album tracks; I listened to all of it when I was coming up. I like to be surprised. The Ride always surprises me.

I do wish they would put a little more life between the songs. A weather report once in a while would be good. And that voice guy...well, at least get some other voices so it doesn't get monotonous. That guy is creepy. On the other hand, Harriet is great, and the afternoon guy Jeff is, too. Let them do more!

As for consultants...Dan Vallie ain't working for The Ride. If I tell you how I know this, I'd have to kill you, so don't ask.

I think Dave wants to have a decent-sounding station, yet wants to save $$$ at the same time. So, he shoots for music intensive (maintenance free) formats where it sounds like a jukebox--and essentially is--for most folks. It would have been interesting to have seen Dave jump on the "oldies" format when Magic abandoned it, but it would take lots of $$$ to make it sound like "Magic" in its heyday. One thing that us radio junkies need to be reminded of, however--have you realized that 95.7 has maintained its WXRC calls through many format changes? It's been WXRC since the early 70s, or maybe even earlier. Has any other Charlotte-area FM maintained the same calls for that long--maybe 103.7 WSOC?

WFMX (now departed) 1960-2006
WPEG - Since 1961

The WPEG letters were in Winston-Salem in 1961. As far as I know, the practice of letting an AM in one city have the same letters as an FM in another wasn't allowed yet.

Well, you caught me making a mistake. The year the calls came to 97.9 was 1967.

Come to Reidsville sometime and I'll buy you lunch!

I played Daughtry last weekend and I think it's much too hard for either station. If they are going for "at work" listening (and they are) both stations need to bring it down just a little....just the opinion of this grumpy old man! ;D

I think you might be a grump, Mike... ;D
I work with a bunch of ladies in their forties, fifties, and a few in their sixties. They mostly listen to 104.7 at work. They like the DJs better. I asked them about Daughtry and they all love him, thanks to American Idol. One of the ladies in her fifties even has his CD. Remember, we're a bunch of old guys trying to guess what women want, not always a good thing :) I always thought more ACs should be programmed by women. AC seems more song driven than ever before, but I guess all formats are getting to be like that.

Wasn't this thread started to get us off of AC's?
