The sad, sad state of Phoenix radio...

Where do I begin...

KTAR has never sounded more dull. It's worse than Michael Dixon doing Sky Harbor PSAs 24/7...

The Nutz sound like they have none - Dirties on the :30's is just sad and pathetic. 16 year-olds with more kids and boyfriends than I have socks is not funny. BTW, has Bruce St. James EVER worked a 40 hour week?!?

KDKB is playing ten different songs from their old format. Everything that rocks apparently means a chair...

Bruce Jacobs is more and more maniacal everyday. You can actually hear the spittle form at the corner of his mouth...(did anyone hear him call the governor a dyke the other day?)

KEZ makes me want to shoot myself in the head  with a gun full of mistletoe. Beth and Bill ARE the best thing going there, but that's not much of a damn thing.

The Peak has the worst jocks in the city - possibly the world.

Free FM has uncovered the secret of finding the most shocking of all syndicated programming. It's so bad, its shocking that anyone wants to hear it in more than one city...

Sorry to be so negative, but if someone has a bright spot or two, I'd be glad to hear about it (and then listen to it!).

Soooooo I'm thinking we'd all like you to listen to KEZ some more.

Got ammo?

The Peak has the worst jocks...

Wait, The Peak has jocks???

I hadn't noticed.

KDKB? I'm still waiting for their promised format change. Sorry, but continuing to play hopelessly "mainstream" rock isn't "new."

As for Free, I disagree (hey, that Busta rhymes!). They've got one semi-shocking program in the afternoon, and the rest is just talk for the sake of talk. SFTU until you have something to say, Free FM.

Movin? I never thought a station could have less personality than KEZ. I was wrong! Please, hire just one real person to work at that station! And I don't mean the consultant!

Power 98.3? I'm sorry, but my ipod doesn't pick up your station.

Clear Channel: I hope against hope that the new owners will realize that cookie-cutter programming that just barely rises to the level of the wildest dreams of an American Idol runner-up won't cut it in today's post Lowry Mays media environment, but I won't hold my breath.

Have you people sunk so low the only thing that you want is SHOCK? Are you so jaded and screwed up you can't listen to something mainstream because YOU think it's boring?

yes.. all out of work or maybe never worked... people do nothing but complain. i happen to like what kdkb is doing. the peak.. they do very well and the jocks serve up the music as they are told to do! not every jock can be THE morning guy.

hey buffo.. i'd like fries with that! and tune in kdkb.. they are playing post toastie and by the way i heard some zappa yesterday!

Their biggest problem since they moved to FM is that their old guys (Gerald, Paul Harvey) now sound as old as they really are. On AM, they don't sound quite as ancient.

KDKB is playing ten different songs from their old format. Everything that rocks apparently means a chair...

They sound more like KSLX than KUPD but that's because I'm getting older. I actually like their new sound but I still prefer KSLX.

Bruce Jacobs is more and more maniacal everyday. You can actually hear the spittle form at the corner of his mouth...(did anyone hear him call the governor a dyke the other day?)

Hannity-Lite is totally unlistenable unless he's talking about sports. Which is why I no longer listen to KFYI except for Rush.

KEZ makes me want to shoot myself in the head  with a gun full of mistletoe. Beth and Bill ARE the best thing going there, but that's not much of a damn thing.

I hear they're starting Christmas Music on July 4th next year. Perfect for that first monsoon storm. ;D

Shock-talk without Howard Stern is just potty-mouthed garbage. Even though it's not my taste, Stern at least knows how to do it. These wannabes don't.

Sorry to be so negative, but if someone has a bright spot or two, I'd be glad to hear about it (and then listen to it!).

OK, what do you suggest and can it make money (the latter is more important)?

Why is it so shocking for someone to demand that their radio be more than just a jukebox?

The Peak's imaging was clever when the station signed on. I was waiting for the jocks they eventually hired to be equally entertaining. They aren't. They're pretty much the same people who were sitting in the chair when it was K-Lite. I'm sure they're nice enough people, but I like jocks that do more than just backsell and intro.

KDKB...a station with 35 years of heritage and history should be something more. Maybe it's because Sandusky doesn't want to fork out money for jocks. I like the music, but again...jukebox.

FreeFM. I don't necessarily want shock, but how 'bout some entertainment? Carolla isn't it, Frosty Heidi and Frank are annoying (what's that Heidi? You're a lesbian? Do tell!), and who hired those night guys?

Movin. Again, I like the music. Again, it's nothing but a jukebox.

Mix. Jukebox.

KSLX. Old jukebox.

You get the idea...

What goes in between the songs is what sets us (and yes radiocat, I'm working) apart from Ipods and satellite radio. Local, entertaining personality is what I'm asking from my radio. Can every jock be the morning guy? Of course not. But there was a time not so long ago when every daypart had an entertaining jock. Someone who served up the music AND kept you entertained on that now crushingly long drive home.

That "AND" is something that obviously consultant-driven stations like the Peak and Movin' aren't designed to provide, and companies like Sandusky and Clear Channel won't pony up the cash to provide.

And yeah, maybe it's nothing but complaints, but isn't that what this board is for, anyway?

The on-air talent can make all of the difference in the world, in my opinion.

When I started in radio--back in 1985--the DJ was an important part of the station. The DJ was expected to be entertaining, relate well with the audience and make things fun. My favorite example is an air check from Terry Steele when he worked at CHUM. I was in awe of his talent and his on-air presence. I wanted to be Terry Steele.

Well, (IMHO) Terry Steele wouldn't make it in the radio of today. Not because of lack of talent...not at all! But because he wouldn't fit into the cookie-cutter DJ mold of today.

Phoenix radio still has some great DJ's today in the mold of Terry Steele:

Steve Goddard
Stu Evans
(Who would you add/subtract, and why?)

Here are some other DJ's that I like:

Doc Ellis
John Holmberg
Brian Allen
Colin Boyd
(Who would you add/subtract, and why?)

Another detractor in radio today is corporate ownership. Sure, the goal of a good DJ has always been to make money for the owner. But now that the suits run the show, radio just isn't that much fun anymore.

Sorry for the rant. I'll get off my soapbox now...

Get Sirius. Exactly what radio should be.

Shade45 all day. Under the Influence Radio is still alive. Just better hosts. Maybe not better.

I agree with the choices of Steve and Stu. I'd add (just my own personal preferences):

Supersnake (KISS-FM)
Tim Virgin (The Edge)
Danny Davis (KOY)

Sirius:
Sluggo (Alt Nation)
Freddie Snakeskin (First Wave)

XM:
Bobby Ocean (70s on 7)
Absolutely Mindy (XM Kids)

I thought Phoenix radio was HORRIBLE when I lived there, especially if you are African-American. The only choices that you had were Power (but what if you didn't want Hip-Hop non-stop) and Kiss (sometimes too bubble gum). Are there ANY African-American adults that live in Phoenix. You wouldn't think so with the "lack of" choices that there were. What about old and new school R&B? Mega was horrible and had the worst reception. I am just glad I don't live there anymore.

When did you live in Phoenix? Phoenix has had urban radio over the years....KUKQ, KISO, KSUN (they did an urban ac format at night) and KMJK, but unfortunately they all went away. The black population is still small in Phoenix but it is growing. Plus, there are a lot of whites and latinos in Phoenix that enjoy R&B. In due time, urban ac will return to the valley airwaves.

The Black population is around 5%, so that would mean close to 200,000 African-Americans in the metro area, surely there could be one station that caters to that group? We have a dozen or more for the Latino population. I would rather be the #1 choice for 200,000 people that the #30 one for the rest.It always seem that everyone wants to try and carve up a portion of the largest slice of pie and forget the rest. Lets have a dozen pop, rock or Spanish stations and get poor ratings, but forget getting good ratings from the demo left out in the cold. ::)

5% of 3 million is 150,000, and just as we have no particular stations for "white people", what is to say the black community in Phoenix wants anything different than anyone else?

Arbitron does not even use DST in Phoenix, and there are no HDHA's. A Black station with such a small target and no stratification varibles employed for proporitonality would have no chance at either success or survival. And that is without going into the discussion of the fact that not all members of any group like the same thing.

well, isn't it because most PDs want you to "shut up and play the music"?

Well put.
