The Simpsons renewed through 2025, will pass 800-episode mark

But isn’t that the point of a business, to make money? If the show is still doing so, indicating a decent number of people are watching, continuing with it is the way to go. We all know we’re closer to the end than the beginning.
The simpsons could still continue in some form long after the show ends though.

With The Simpsons it's the same voice cast that started in 1989 with the show and some that even started with the Tracy Ullman show in 1987 that did the Simpsons shorts on her show.
Harry Shearer is about the same age as Mr. Burns. One of these days he'll die or have to be replaced.

In fact, most of the cast is getting up there in years.

They do this every year since the beginning of tv of course in the early years tv shows had about 39 episodes a season now they have anywhere between 13-22 episodes a season where 20 years ago it was anywhere between 22 and 26 episodes a season. From September to May they have new episodes spread out through those months with repeats during holidays and winter and sometimes during the early spring and by late spring the last 6 new episodes air of the season. Then repeats during the summer.

no football next weekend, just an awards show the fewer people will watch
Sports, which they have, not expending new episodes against tentpole events on other networks, and waiting until your schedule permits greater continuity of airing episodes week to week is common practice. Whatever this hang up is over a common business practice, it’s something fictional on your part.
