Yeah well let's not skip over the hormonal, sleep-deprived reaction either. My guess, he didn't mean it the way she took it.

I think Ryan Lackey has proven that he has what it takes to be the replacement for Mike Lewis. This fight between Joe and Kim is no different than when Tom and Noreen have it out off camera. Tom says cold front, Noreen warm front...Tom says snow, Noreen Sun....it gets REALLY ugly...I've heard that during one such blowup, Noreen intentionally dressed in all green just to embarrass Tom on camera. For weeks he had to field personal questions about why Noreen was just a head floating high above the US saying "Top of the morning to you!" Where is Captain Corn to settle this once and for all and bring peace to the broadcasters of the area once again!

There is one reason WNEP has viewers in the morning, and that's the poor excuse for a morning broadcast put on by WYOU/WBRE. I can't believe people tolerate 16's silliness. This act grew tired months, maybe years, ago. On that other hand, the other morning show is coma inducing. (Sorry Mr. Webster)

Hey, even I will give him snaps for that.

Would someone please re-tell the story so that all of us can know what happened?

WNEP personalities tangle on-air
BY GERI ANNE KAIKOWSKI Staff Writer

MOOSIC — What started off as a friendly exchange between two TV staffers on a WNEP early morning newscast Friday took a nasty turn, sparking a debate among viewers over the rights of working mothers.

WNEP morning anchor Kim Supon was chided by meteorologist Joe Snedeker for having called off the previous day when her 9-month-old son was sick.

His comments that she should choose between being a working mother or a career woman got the ire of many viewers who called the station in protest.

“I’d rather try to take the high road on this, work through it and try to put it behind us,” said Ms. Supon, when reached at her home late Friday afternoon.

“It was just something taken out of context and blown out of proportion,” said Mr. Snedeker, declining further comment.

Neither WNEP General Manager C. Lou Kirchen nor News Director Dennis Fisher would comment.

More than 100 people used WNEP’s Talkback 16 phone and Internet lines to voice their comments about the disagreement.

Before the start of his weather forecast, Mr. Snedeker, known for his sense of humor, at first joked about staffers taking days off.

He then told viewers that Ms. Supon used up all her 10 allocated sick days for the year. The meteorologist, whose wife stays at home with their three small children, said he still had eight of his days left.

Ms. Supon explained that her son, Quinn, had been up sick three times during the night and she only had 15 minutes of sleep. She also has a daughter, Campbell, 2½.

Mr. Snedeker then told Ms. Supon that if he were her boss, he would have her choose between being a mother or having a career.

The anchor responded by telling him: “Joe, you’ve stepped over the line.” Ms. Supon, who was visibly upset on the air, finished the rest of her news report before breaking to a commercial.

After several ads, “Newswatch 16 This Morning” came back with reporter Ryan Leckey finishing the newscast at the anchor desk. Co-anchor Tom Williams was off Friday. Ms. Supon never returned for the rest of the morning show.

Mr. Snedeker, who does weather reports on radio stations WKRZ and WILK, told one morning talk show that Ms. Supon left the TV show abruptly because she was ill. He attributed her tears to having something in her eye.

WBRE News Director Paul Stueber hired Mr. Snedeker as a full-time meteorologist when he was news director at WNEP, and worked with Ms. Supon.

Mr. Stueber, who did not watch the show but heard what happened, said the pair has been on friendly terms for many years.

“If I was still in charge over there, I would get them both together and have them talk it out like brother and sister,” he said.

“They really do get along. They have been like brother and sister for years. It’s a big misunderstanding and I’d hate to see their friendship end because of this.”

Thanks. I've had quite a few people over the past four years that we've been doing our little TV "hits" each morning tell me that they enjoy watching and that's gratifying.

To me it feels like being tossed out of the boat twice an hour just to see if I can tread water long enough to finally hear that merciful, disembodied director's voice in my ear say "Wrap!", tossing me the figurative life-preserver that I use to pull myself back onboard.

Point is, I take no offense if you don't like the show. I'm responsible for such a miniscule amount of the broadcast that I'm not a valid target for anyone's negative opinion regarding it's style or content.

Of course if you like the show then I happily claim full responsibility for that since after all, I am in radio, and to paraphrase a former boss, "Success has many fathers but failure is an orphan."

Remember that next book.

Was it 16 or 50?

Someone posted this on the Talkback 16 board under the name "Fellow Broadcaster." I don't know if it's a 16'er or a friend of Kim's at 50. Or Kim.

"Never make fun of something you haven't done, or never will be called upon to do. The first rule of joking on the air is to prepare them beforehand so you know you will not say anything offensive. Once the 'joke' has gone out the antenna, it's way too late to bring it back -- if that really was a joke and not a little stab out of jealousy. This is a conservative, family-values community and an anchor's temporary struggle with her children's health problems is far more admirable than an ill-chosen barb."<P ID="signature">______________

I would say to that, "Never say never" and "There ARE no rules of joking", except maybe don't say something that's going to cause you to have to sit through a meeting where you'll have to listen to someone whose primary function appears to be holding meetings, drone on and on about why you should do this, you shouldn't do that, and you must never do the other thing.

I would say too that the "ill-chosen barb" was probably supposed to be a joke that somewhere along the way hormones and sleep deprivation robbed of it's playful intent. I have a feeling that as wonderful and talented as Kim Supon is, Joe Snedeker isn't jealous of her.

I'm glad people enjoy your hits, but I honestly have to say that I do not. I think yooz guys are funnier when you're talking about local stuff, not reading bad wire copy. On top of that, there are 5 people fighting for air time. It doesn't work. Nothing against Mr. Sweeney, but leave him out. The spots will work much better.

I had the bad fortune of watching the ill fated exchange. Like most of Snedeker's stuff it was neither funny nor clever. This guy hasn't come up with anything interesting in years, so he has to resort to azz busting. It fell flat on its face, or its azz. It was an embarrassment to the people involved and to the television station. I can't wait to see the way its swept under the rug.

I'm no fan of reading bad wire copy either.

> On top of that, there are 5 people fighting for air time.

How many?

I guess it can seem that way. Speaking only for me, if I'm talking it's because I'm hoping to fill up the time with anything that will help us avoid reverting to the aforementioned "bad wire copy". Hoping something funny or at least amusing will emerge is, I think, better than throwing in the towel right from the start.

> It doesn't work. Nothing against Mr. Sweeney, but leave him

Disagree. Watch when he's not there to see what I mean.

And remember the big picture. It's about cross-promotion first. Content was an after-thought from Day One.

John, and everyone else....

A little after 6am this morning (Monday), on air, Sned apologized to Sup, and it seemed a very sincere apology, Sup accepted, they said they sometimes act like siblings and Sned evem apologized to all the people who called in and emailed about his little "joke' to Kim. Sup said that its all behind them and hopefully it is so. How many times in this business do we tick someone off unintentionally by saying something we might think is a joke, but someone else takes it the wrong way. So have a cake, have some pie... and this will be all forgotten in a few days, like it should be.... They should all go to the Leiderkrantz now and have Rose throw some food at them, drink way too much and move on...

Pennsylvania Morning

I stopped watching 16 in the morning soon after Snedeker took over. I probably am in the minority but I can't stand him. He's way too over the top for me in the morning. And I used to get annoyed when he'd be fooling around so much he had to rush through the weather, which is his job last time I checked. I like the format on Pennsylvania Morning, which is not to say they can't use some improvements. I know I'll get the news and weather every ten minutes. And while Vince can be a little tiring at times, I don't want to scream every time he comes on. I can at least get a weather forecast if nothing else. I also like Mark Hiller and Kerry Shaheen. Kerry's a little bubbly but she is not over the top.

Some areas to improve on: someone mentioned more local and less wire reports. Also a new set would be nice. I don't know what others think but I don't care for it too much. And don't bother trying to compete with 16. Just do the best you can and maintain a loyal watcher base. People around here don't know how to change the channel. I hear people all the time talk about how they can't stand 16 anymore yet they continue to watch it. I don't think people know there are alternatives. Newswatch 16 could hire Bozo the Clown to do the news and people would still watch it religiously.

Come on...some of that "People in the News" stuff from whatever wire or prep service you use is pretty tired.

Let's count-- John, Jay, Mark, Kerry and Vince. I did make it through the seventh grade, and that comes out to five.

Then leave someone out. Five is more than enough.

Content an after thought? And Nexstar can't figure out why they're in the ratings cellar, a cellar so deep it will take years to find daylight. People in this market are begging for an alternative to WNEP's Klown Kollege.
