"THE SPORTS HUB" IS BORN

The official start of 98.5 "The Sports Hub" came at 3:00am EST on Thursday August 13, 2009.

Steve Levellie announced it on his show after the top of the hour break at 3 am as well.

As of now, they are airing the Pats first Super Bowl win against The St. Louis Rams...

4:08 EST: Halftime and then a 4-5 minute montage of Boston sports audio from the past... no No Legal I.D. to be heard... perhaps they did it a few minutes before the top of the hour? However I began listening at around 3:55 am... (?)

Also when going to the break they faded it out before G. Santos gave the "N.E. Patriots/WBCN Rock Radio Network" outcue.

I thought the NFL frowned on replaying games. Didn't WEEI try to replay a Super Bowl and was told they could not?

Or does being the "Patriots flagship" make a difference?

Would it be out of the realm of possibility that somebody recorded the actual "Sports Hub" launch - perhaps someone is even rolling tape right now?

Well, I was planning on starting when I got up this morning.  I actually started around 4:30 and they were already into the SB36 replay.  So I am "rolling bits".

Now they're replaying SB38.

Hey, I wonder if some sort of "wardrobe malfunction" at the half will lead to the debut of T&R on 98.5... :D

There was a legal ID right before the first superbowl started at 3 AM. I'm still rolling cool edit...

Note how all references to the Patriots BCN Rock Radio Network have been removed.

I had a feeling they were going to begin broadcasting with old Patriots games... obviously the super bowl games. Sounds very good, by the way...

They started using NESN Red Sox highlights when Crash was doing sports updates on Toucher and Rich a few weeks ago once the announcement was made of the format flip and frequency switch..

As far as the lauch..I was underwhelmed..granted, the imaging is excellent..but do you really want to start a whole new radio station with the radio call of a Super Bowl that's almost 10 years old? Maybe its just me..but I don't get it..

It might not be a bad thing. Sports loves its history and Boston Sports fans are pretty passionate about their particular history. Could be a good way to help ease listeners into a Station going up against a pretty well established brand (WEEI) and its own history (Patriots on WBCN, Bruins on WBZ...).

That and who doesn't love the Patriots winning Super Bowls, especially that first one?

Although I'm sure their rights to broadcast these Super Bowl games are a bit questionable... I'll leave that to the lawyers.

So far so good... The production pieces BLOW AWAY the crap that WEEI puts on. Tony Maz sounds better on FM, and Felger even sounds better. I've heard EEI on 103.7 and is it 96.3 on the cape?, and the WBZ-FM sound is much much better.

Am in BWI airport/Balt. area, on way home from trip; listening on netbook/their site. Caller said it was great to hear sports talk that didn't sound like it was being broadcast from the men's room.
