Din't one of the Dicks "broker / sell" stations too? Is this the same Dick that owned 1450 in Chattanooga in the late 60's or early 1970s? I worked for a brief time for his brother at 1550 Soddy Daisy. 1550 had the old 1450 automation system around 1975, complete with the optical (?) spacers on two or three reel to reel units that "found" the commercial buy counting the breaks then braking and going back and forth until it found the start tone. It actually worked until it occasionally it would not brake fast enough and the tape came off the reel when going from one end of the tape to the other end.

The reason why The River isn't performing better is because it's competing with a heritage CHR which gets great adult numbers. The typical Hot AC demo has been listening to Star for years and has no reason to switch. Personally I think The River needs to change their direction completely and go classic hits.

Time is ripe for someone big to step up and start buying in. Of the cash-heavy broadcast companies, what are the biggest that aren't in Knoxville? Underline cash-heavy. Not debt-heavy.

Most of the cash heavy broadcasters we don't want, they are known as Jesus Casters. Who don't pay taxes. We do not need Cheap Channel in our market. We also don't need a Hip Hop outlet which is as sellable as a Beautiful or Smooth Jazz format around here.

I do know one viable format on FM which the Knoxville market does need and is sellable if done right. Country Oldies I second.

I don't think Clear Channel or CBS would be interested in Knoxville as they seem to be focusing more on large/major markets right now. I would, however, love to see Entercom buy into the Knoxville market. They are in quite a few medium markets and seem to do a really good job with most formats (their "Wolf" country stations are some of the best sounding & well produced country outlets in the nation. I also think their CHR's & Adult Hits formats are well programmed.) I would love to see them come into Knoxville & buy out someone like Journal and also scoop up Pirkle's 100.3. (that would make for an attractive cluster. They could move country to 100.3 with their Wolf branding & really give 'IVK fits. They've knocked off heritage country stations already with this format. Greensboro & Seattle are examples).

You cats never cease to amaze and entertain me. To think 106.1 could compete in this market, with their
milquetoast, satellite delivered, format just cracks me up.

They were hoping to compete better with their local morning show.

They do satellite well, with "local" national announcers that identify the station, do local promos and occasionally temperature and weather.

Taking out WNOX, which apparently Arbitron still has listed as Cumulus per Unknown's post, here's how the big three shake out:

South Central 23.9
Cumulus 22.4
Journal 17

Looks like South Central is now the number one group in town.

This is going along with the typical success of Cruds. Watch that 22.4 magically disappear over the next few books. Remember, it's all about the ratings. Way to go South Central. Job well done. Crums - you are on the right track. Keep the hits a coming.

I see that WOKI with what I consider to be a horrible signal is beating the daylights out of WNOX with its warp drive signal. Maybe Pirkle should take that station in another direction.

Like I say, WNOX is a wasted format on that killer signal. 94.3's format on that stick makes sense and X 94.3 would be better on the WNOX stick. Easily done. News-Talk is a 7.5 K or less FM stick at best.
Hello, Babies!
Interesting couple of posts. Has anyone seen how badly WOKI beats the daylights out of the other news talker in their actual demo...adults 25-54? Anyone knows that 12 Plus Shares is a totally irrelevant demo with newstalkers. I would bet the farm that, in total cume audience, the two year old wnox reincarnation is within 12% of woki's audience, unless it actually beats them. Any takers?

One good thing Cumulus did was lose several gossipy sales reps. There's one from South Central calling on a friend. She has some maturity to her, so she doesn't volunteer gossip. She'll pass it along if asked, along with her take on how much of the rumor is BS.

The rumor of the week is that Journal wants to get 100.3 so Mike Hammond will have something to play with. Q93 now reports its playlist and is talking about a big announcement for Boomsday.

Yea, I could just imagine that it would be a huge headache for the frog should Brantley and Hammond get together again (considering their experience and contacts in the country music business) working that blowtorch 100.3 signal. That signal is actually superior in many areas that I've been in than 107.7. Time will tell.

One would think that the frog has had a debilitating migrane ever since Atlanta started trying to assimilate it into the hive. Cumulus ought to change its name to Honey Badger Media.

I saw the Pirkle boy's chauffeur yesterday. Said he's been busier than a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest. Something about the Pirkles driving around looking for new studio space for both of their stations.

What Mr. Pickle said is true. I've been incredibly wrong before, but who sees anything in the way of useful market changes between now and the end of the year? Two of the three groups seem more interested in protecting what they have. The other one is so worried about making cuts they don't care if they lose five dollars a year to save a dollar right this minute.

The only thing I hear right now is a deafening clicking noise. It's the suitcase latches of millions of dollar bills packing up in preparation for their march across town and up Sharps Ridge.

Mr. Pickle is right on the money. South Central so scared of protecting B 97.5 with Star 102.1 tied for second place, today, they flip 95.7 Jack FM to 95.7 Power FM to serve as a flanker station to protect their money maker WJXB. Of course it will be the same ole story, no jocks, no promotions, just the same ole story as Jack FM was.

"The deafening clicking noise of dollars wending their way across town and up Sharp's Ridge" is Quotable of the week in this market. A.K.A. There is a new Cumulus radio show, Dialing for Arbitron Ratings Points.

Scared or smart? or both?

Actually, it probably is a smart move. Jack wasn't really performing that well, and the jock less CHR jukebox can be ran just as cheaply, will more than likely garner at least marginally better numbers, and will help B fight off Star. Also, Power FM can be sold easily as a combo with their other stations (sell ads with B97.5 to reach all female demos from teens to 50's, or sell it in combination with 94.3 The X to reach both the female & male audience in the 18-34 demo). From a purely business standpoint, it may be a very wise move.
