The Stale 97.1 The River

I continue to be amazed by the performance of 97.1. They have got to be the most boring radio station ever. The same songs over and over and over and over and over and over…According to Ho, the “New” River has not added a single new song since November of 2006, and yet they still get good numbers. How?

Because it's simple, background noise and people leave it on all day. Didn't you now that Classic Hits is a euphemism for AC? The River is a non-stop, Baby Boomer suck fest.

You know I like this music and my 16 year old son likes it too. It is nice to have something in common with your teenager. But I think I'll go crazy if I hear "the new 97.1 the river" again. There is nothing new here anymore. Can't they at least update their imaging. I've been meaning to call their number, but I am always driving and can't write it down when I hear it. It's enough to send me back to am.

It seems that every time I flip to that station, "Tiny Dancer" is playing.

They are a typical classic rock station that plays 300 songs as comfort for old folks. I remember listeneing to AOR back in the day and there were more than 300 songs that got played.

I don't think Cox cares about this station at all. As long as it bills well is the top rated rock station in Atlanta, why should they?

As for Radiofreegeorgia - I am glad that you and your son enjoy the music together. The original point of rock and roll however, is to piss off your parents. It wasn't a good day in my house until my mom yelled at the top of her lungs "TURN DOWN THAT F%$#ING ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC BEFORE I THROW YOU OUT OF HERE!!!"

Which would present an interesting quandry for my son ... since he & I share the same hardrocking tastes.

To piss me off, he'd have to start listening to rap or lightweight CHR or something.

I've always joked about this. When my baby daughter grows up she'll hear massive amounts or rock music along the way. Everything from roots reggae, alternative, classic rock, electronica, country (Cash-style)... just a huge amount of variety. And then she'll pick out gangster rap to piss me off when she's 15! I know this going to happen! :D

Although the Weasel & I don't seem to agree very often, I think the opening observation of his post is spot on.

They're putting up numbers because they're background noise. I'm not so sure that it's so much the new AC though is it is the even newer "elevator music" or even Muzak. Doctor's, dentists, grocery stores, they're easily on over half the in-store radios I seem to hear. And I'm waaaay outside the perimeter, I can only imagine how much they're getting in places closer to the middle of the metro.

My dentist office has Sirius, so instead of B98.5 or...um...B98.5, I get to hear the 80s channel. Sometimes his jam-band fanatic receptionist puts it on the Jam Channel, which is annoying but more enjoyable (to me) than The River.

Typical Cox programming- safe, calculated and they do well simply because they don't make many bad mistakes. Their stations are not very interesting nor compelling- certainly not exciting but they just take the high, safe road and chug along. Of course, when a superior product that's well-targeted and well- promoted comes along, they get their asses kicked pretty fast.

Yeah...that'll happen. ;D

You're right. What other Atlanta operators have proven to have the saavy to actually execute a fundamentally sound, compelling, interesting radio station?
(I can't name one ::))

Yeah...that'll happen. ;D

97.1 The River works because it's the perfect refuge for those that still sorely miss Z93 and 96 Rock, when they played those same songs over and over again. If the station provides comfort for these folks, so be it. At least it allows a little more creativity for the other stations now (albeit...a little).

Lately I've been listening online to a new station that sounds like a "fresh" River. Click HERE and click "Listen Online" in the top left corner.

I know it's a Birmingham station, but I really want your honest opinion about their playlist - and would it work in ATL?

Maybe it works because they, you know, play music. Last year if I turned 96 Rock on in the morning it was two guys talking for four hours. In the evenings, it was the Braves. In addition, there's only 8 minutes of commercials per hour on The River.

I love it
WHY IN THE HELL CAN'T WE GET THAT IN NUMERO 9 MARKET????????????????????????????????????????

God, it sounds like an old AM station. Very jealous of this one. I would kill for a station like this in Atl.

I have been listening to this station all day. God, I wish Atlanta had this, it actually sounds alive, it reminds me so much of the old WQXI in the 70's.

I tried the stream for while - Not bad trusty. I don't see any reason it would not work in Atlanta. It's better than River to be sure. This stuff would have been playing on the AM/FM/8 Track radio in my first car...

The only negative for me was the occasional disco.

I agree, but it is so much better than what Atlanta has to offer.
B98.5 is dull.
River is dull.
Then everything else is either Country or Urban crap.

Brent, we get it. You want some form of oldies station in Atlanta again. I would like to see one, myself, but I'm not holding my breath. I just don't see it happening. They were so badly botched in their last 2 attempts (the later Cox version of Fox97 and most of Cool 105's life) that I doubt anybody's going to go there again.

Geez. And someone thought it was that "Neil Millman" fella I'd be rescuing from the top of a belltower. ;D

So Brent, before I have to do that, take a deep breath. Now let it out...repeat...there's a good lad.
