The "Suburgatory" Thread

I am gonna give it a try, since free agents after up all night, I don't like too much

I thought it was decent and similar to THE MIDDLE, which I also enjoy. They are throwing
out a lot of stereotypes, but it's pretty funny.

WAAAAY over the top and completely unrealistic. Daughter's girlfriend's mother is the most obnoxious actress on TV so far this season.

Don't the network suits watch these shows before putting them on the air? In what universe is this one funny? It is supposed to be a comedy after all.

One more new offering scratched off my list.

Newton Minnow continues to roll over in his grave.

I'm guessing the lead-in worked well for Suburgatory although The Middle is not sustaining the humor of previous seasons. It's not off my list yet but another episode having Sue running the aisles of her high school repeatedly is certain to do it.

I'll agree, that was a weak effort. But all series have a handful of clinker episodes if they're on long enough.

But to have one as the early episode in a new season can set the stage for disaster.

Everybody has their own opinion(s). Just because you didn't like it is OK, but you should
not expect everyone to feel the same.

For a half-hour sitcom, producing an hour long episode is a big risk. Yes - the writing and characters on The Middle are funny in small doses - but an hour was too much 'Heck' for me

So was last week and it was back to the half hour. One more week of this and I'm pulling the plug on the Hecks.

"Different Strokes for Different Folks," and all that. It's a sit-com - who said it had to be "realistic?" And a certain kind of comedy is "way over the top," which doesn't make it any less funny. Neither I Love Lucy or Andy Griffith were anywhere close to realistic.

It's true - nobody would speak many of these lines in real life - like when the dad is in the country club, and the waitress offers herself up to him for sex like she's an item on the menu. Unrealistic, yes - but funny.

The show reminds me of the comedy-fantasy Pushing Daisies from a few years ago. This is not a fantasy show, of course, but they use a lot of the same staging and filming techniques. Notice everything is overly -bright and colorful - the whole suburban world is in bright pastel shades.

I also liked Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm). She was kind of repugnant on one-hand (and yes, "over-the-top") but somewhat sympathetic toward the end.

The major odd note is Jeremy Sisto in a comedy. He usually plays dramatic parts (Law and Order) or dark brooding and troubled men (Six Feed Under)- not sitcom TV dads. He did well with his role though, I thought.

Very cleverly done, in my opinion.

Agree on the different strokes thing but AG, with the exception of Don Knotts' character was somewhat believable and so was Lucy. Suburgatory is a stereotype, and one that is so far out it makes no sense whatever. Humor is usually the result of what we can imagine are real world situations - not a situation that is totally implausible. This show could easily have been a Simpson's theme.

I agree, although he didn't have much to work with I thought he did a passable job too. The writers didn't seem to think his role through very well though. They might have considered a 'Peanuts' role and just play him invisible.

I went to the beach last week and didn't have time to watch the pilot. Not having a VCR in my motel room (the place where I stayed 28 times over 30 years used to have them), I had to go ahead and watch the second episode and increase the backlog I'd have to deal with at home.

I hated it. Didn't want to see more.

Then after getting home I watched the pilot. I really like the girl who moved from the city and her commentaries. It's all those other people I can't stand. At least the pilot was tolerable. I'll give it another try.

Not hardly.

"The Middle" is close to surpassing "Big Bang Theory" as my favorite.

I base this on the past two weeks, not that annoying guest appearance by that annoying Ray Romano.

Sue is hilarious!

I feel the opposite.

TARDY SWEEP!

(Carries Landtuna out of the site)

The middle does have some clunkers, but about every 4th show they are RIGHT ON and I am
laughing more so than most other comedies.
