The Todd & Don Show - OMG LOL!

Yep...all it takes is a couple of big ad buyers pulling their spots and a national contractors association threatening a boycott. Frankly, if these two are so stupid they'd use this language in one of the parts of the country with a fast-growing Hispanic population, they aren't smart enough to be on the air.

They belong in management.

I hear there are about to be openings at Clear Channel?

The funny thing about this is that one of the complaining entities listed in the KLBJ Press Release has (or had) a slur against gays on their website. I heard the show they got canned for. It was actually kind of funny. The show is mostly comedy with some talk about issues but almost always from a humorous point of view. A great relief after that god awful morning show.

Anyone remember the Rollye James lawsuit resulting from a similar termination? I think Todd and Don need to call their lawyers....

I think the two have found out that maligning the soon-to-be majority ethnic group in Texas is probably bad radio. Using that particular term isn't "irony", as Pryor claimed, it's just not smart, at least from a business point of view.

And the so-called news director didn't make him shut up. This crap went on for 30(!) different instances. They should both be off the air, not for the slur, but for gross stupidity. I'm not surprised the GM didn't fire both of them and would be surprised if they haven't been told that they have little future at Ennis.

Todd and Don were not terminated, fired, laid-off, indefinitely suspended or any of the sort. They were suspended for two weeks, and that was two weeks ago. The show was canceled. Period. Opine as you may, whether it was right or wrong to cancel it, it got axed. Lessons were learned. It is time for everybody, including the ethicity-baters to move on! As far as boycotting advertisers, boycotting is not an effective capitalistic tool. It is outdated. And boycotting a business, like JP Mortgage, only penalizes good people who have had nothing to do with the situation.

I live in San Antonio.. Hispanics use immigrant all the time to describe illegals from Mexico... I guess National Council of La Raza doesn't know this...

This is not San Antonio. This is Austin....for better or worse.

And it wasn't only the use of the word....the man screamed it over and over again, more than 30(!) times, in an effort to get a rise out of people.

Well, he got a rise, all right. Hope he enjoys sweeping up after 5:00 p.m.

Yeah, what they said was stupid and juvenile, especially in this 'sensitive' political idol-worship era, but as adults, they should have known better. Besides, isn't the Republic of Austin a santuary city? I would expect something like that here on our local radio stations. And what's this 'reassigned' to other positions garbage? If they had been from the ethnic group at the heart of this matter, or any other "protected class", they would have been 'reassigned' to the unemployment line. The same thing happens here in our "World Class city". Someone from 'that group' screws up and gets reprimanded or transferred, while everyone else gets escorted to the pavement. Who really cares about that show anyway? It was probably as lame as the ones we have here, simply repeating the freak news items from the internet, while purposely dodging serious and pertinent local issues in fear of upsetting those who really run our 'World Class' tourist trap.

Two things to the clueless in this thread. "mmnassour "

Don't comment unless you've listened to the show in question. Jeffries didn't use any slur. He's been on the air in Austin for almost 15 years and is well respected in the community. What station are you on? Right...not actually "On Air Talent" just a Hater.

and

Ratings came out this week.....The Todd and Don show came in #1 for their time slot (which ended prior to this incident). Ha Ha Ha
Looks like KLBJ reacted too soon. I bet it will be harder to sell advertising in that timeslot now that the ratings will return to the Pre Todd and Don Show. I think Neil Bortz came in around 16.

OK, Junkie.

Jeffries didn't use any slur. He simply allowed his co-host to do it THIRTY times. Can you say lack of judgment? Can you say that kind of lack of judgment automatically disqualifies you from being behind a microphone?

It IS unfortunate that this HUGE slip up may have cost him a large part of his career. As you say, he had established a fine reputation around Austin as a newsman. I myself have listened to him for years. However, for whatever reason, he crossed the line from news to this vicious kind of hate-filled "commentary" that seems to draw ratings these days.

And as station management learned the HARD way, ratings aren't much of a help when you're facing a boycott from major Hispanic advertisers and all the bad press you can get in a market where radio time is hard to sell.

And yes, I've been on radio here in Austin and south Texas in the past. I left for an industry that's not on the edge of collapse. A business that has to scream W*****K to get ratings is, for all intents and purposes, history.

No hate...just sadness, actually.

Bring'em down to San Antone, we love that kind of satire..

You can have 'em. Like I said elsewhere....this isn't San Antonio, it's Austin.

With no disrespect to my friends down in SA whatsoever.

Jeffries should have walked out of the room. That's what my partner and I did years ago when the third wheel in our morning show decided to do a bit on why it was okay to say a certain word on the radio and it involved using the word repeatedly. He was running the board and we couldn't stop him so we told him on the air that he was on his own and we walked out. He got in trouble and we didn't.

Wasn't Jeffries producer? If so, I can understand him not wanting to abandon the talent, regardless of circumstance. However, he was terribly in error for not objecting to the line of discussion and, assuming he was producer, not having Pryor taken off air if he refused to comply.

I'm assuming someone else was board op.

It's just sad that radio has gone completely into the gutter in search of a ratings point or two.

Drivers on MoPac stop and stare at car wrecks. Maybe that's why KLBJ AM has the numbers it does.

mmnassour - Why are you so against all things Austin? "Drivers on MoPac stop and stare at car wrecks. Maybe that's why KLBJ AM has the numbers it does." This happens everywhere not just Austin.

I'm fairly certain that Jefferies isn't the producer of the show, So many people should have shared in the blame for this incident which is why the apology should have been sufficient. Do you know anything about the ring leader speaking on behalf of the offended Illegal Immigrants?

Don't get me wrong, I don't like the word "W*****k" but I also don't like the US Hispanic Contractors Association's demeaning portrayal of gays. Was it ok that they had a video on their Association's website demeaning Gays and Lesbians for more than a year? I'm sure it reached a broader audience over a year than the Todd and Don show reached in 60 minutes. Frank Fuentes, also hold a city board position, I wonder how many Gays and Lesbians lost out on opportunities because of his opinion on Gays and Lesbians? Here is some additional information so you aren't so clueless. I'm sure you'll be making hateful posts about this association now, right? What a case of bad judgment.

Paul Rodriguez: Doesn't Austin have like a gay... a big gay population?
Contractor in blue: Si, esta rogado por locas ["Yes, nellies always ask him out"]
Paul Rodriguez: So you go, you go [prances] 'and specially for you...' [walks and simulates grabbing contractor's butt, contractors laugh, Rodriguez goes back and simulates holding contractor's testicles]
Paul Rodriguez: Cough! [contractors laugh]
Paul Rodriguez: [prances again] Estas bien nalgón ["You're cute, big butt guy"]
Paul Rodriguez: Let's go, let's go...
Off-camera: [Unintelligible]
Paul Rodriguez: [prances some more] dale a tu cuerpo alegria, Macarena ["Give your body happiness, Macarena", a quote from the song Macarena by Los Del Rio]. Here we go...
At 1:57 there's another bit in which Rodriguez addresses the two contractors as women and hands them over what he describes as invitations for them to join Jenny Craig and lose some weight.

When did contractor safety become so funny? Were the two deaths of Hispanic Construction Workers in the month of July funny? Why didn't this group threaten a boycott then? Safety is one of the association's core mission values.

Dead contractors surely should have been more important that a few hurt feelings, right?

Let's talk about another one of the offended Hispanics. A Texas state senator who voted for tougher drunken driving laws was arrested for allegedly driving drunk. Gonzalo Barrientos. You tell me which is worse? Driving drunk, which we all know kills people, or hurting someone's feelings?

Shame on you Fred Cantu for getting involved with any of this! I'd try real hard not to associate yourself with these self promoting Hypocrites.

I'm an advertiser on 590 KLBJ for a reason - they have the listeners, which brings me the sales. I did hear that there wasn't a single Advertiser that threatened to leave because of the Hispanic Mob tactics but rather several that have threatened to leave because of the station's over reaction.

So in your opinion - A single incident lack of judgment was worth an extreme reaction? I can't wait to see your posts about these quality, offended, Hispanics.

Comparing the reach of a website to that of a broadcast station is apples and oranges. It's safe to say if the Hispanic Contractors' website had any kind of reach they would have gotten complaints about their content a long time ago. In contrast a broadcast station by definition is a mass medium and it puts its content before the public front and center.

To give you an idea of how few people visit the US Hispanic Contractors Association website, Alexa.com ranks it at 11,959,461 in a world where Google and Yahoo rank 1 & 2.

That wasn't a proper response by me (up above) and for that I apologize.

The Hispanic Contractors found themselves embarrassed, as they should have been, by the garbage on their website. It is to their credit that it was immediately taken down.

However, the issue with the Hispanic Contractors website simply proves that we all have a lot to learn when it comes to race relations. This was a very hard lesson for KLBJ and especially the talent involved.

When you're given the microphone and the bully pulpit that comes with it, you also have the responsibility to use it wisely. Don Pryor chose not to and Todd Jeffries chose not to call him out for it. Because of that they have lost their show and KLBJ has lost a profit center. Others have said worse on the radio waves of this country. One day they shall be called to account, either in this life or the next.

It is to KLBJ's credit that such a terrible, terrible, error was quickly addressed. What bothers me more than anything is that I'd bet KLBJ management told these two employees to be "edgy" or some other kind of crap like that. I'll be they were encouraged to be over the top. I hope I'm wrong. But after all that's what garners ratings that advertisers demand, right Junkie? After all, you're one of those buying time.

Maybe it's time we all looked in the mirror...advertiser, broadcaster and listener alike...and reconsidered what's appropriate for the public's airwaves.

pax....mn

let's put this in perspective

IT WAS A ONE HOUR SHOW.

and in the least profitable day part (excluding overnights).

And they sounded like typical 1960 big voiced DJs. It was a horrible hour of radio.

I would bet that 90% of the people in this thread are either one of those 2 or someone that knows one of those 2.

Fred Cantu - That's it? "It's safe to say if the Hispanic Contractors' website had any kind of reach they would have gotten complaints about their content a long time ago." You found nothing wrong with the Association's "Safety" video or demeaning stand towards Gays and Lesbians? Typical.

I really expected more from you but your true colors have been revealed; Punish the Anglos but protect the Latino group. No worries, I don't watch you anyways and your time has obviously passed as your obviously disconnected with the Austin market (large Gay and Lesbian population).

I don't recommend that you Pal around with Michelle...or at least you shouldn't let her drive; we all know how that turned out. Quality
