The Todd & Don Show - OMG LOL!

It's been very interesting to read the dialog in this thread. There is a lot of vitriol and insults going back and forth and obviously some stong feelings. My feeling are not quite as strong at this point, but I would like to give my take.....

I enjoyed listening to the Todd and Don show because I think it was a lighter take on the world after the plodding mess that is the morning show. I heard the show in question and the impression that I got at the time was that Don was engaging in satire. I certainly didn't think that Don was seriously advocating the use of the word in question and I don't to this day think he is racist in the slightest. Now, that being said, was it a good idea to do it? No, probably not. Should the station suspend him or penalize him in some way? Sure. Should the show be yanked off the air never to return? No, absolutely not.

I completely agree with you regarding the content of the show prior to "the incident", Mr. Radio. KLBJ before 10 AM is simply a waste of electricity, given the predictability of the discussions. Yea, it's got ratings, but never from MY book.

The unfortunate thing about this situation is that BOTH Todd and Don showed bad judgment, and I can't think of anything that disqualifies a person more when it comes to sitting in front of a live microphone.

Don Pryor, racist? No way. Not happening. Absurd. But would he have used the "N word" in the same situation? Of course not. The point the Hispanic Contractors were making is that "w*****k" is their "N word", and to use it is as hurtful to the Hispanic community as the other is to the African-American community. I don't think either Todd OR Don realized that on that day. I'm pretty sure they both realize it now.

Should the show have been pulled completely? It was the easy thing for Emmis to do. It satisfied that Hispanic Contractors and the show hadn't been on the air long enough to have gained enough traction to offend the entire community of listeners when it was pulled. Personally, I think Emmis should have suspended them for 30 days, then sent them back on their air with a couple of reps. from the Hispanic Contractors to have a frank discussion about what happened.

I think it could have been a major, as they say, "teaching" moment...for everyone.

But...as with any major corporation...it chose the safe route. And that cost two guys their gigs...and the community what could have been an excellent discussion of what is a festering sore here in Austin.....racism against the Hispanic community.

KLBJ-AM should have simply added a female Hispanic third wheel and told Paul Saldana (the hired PR flack), Frank Fuentes (out of what hole did he crawl, anyway; waiting for his announcement for city council or county commissioner) and Barrientos (washed up and looking for a second wind at anybody's expense) to take a long walk off a short pier in the middle of a cat 5. Austin has been coddled for too long. Time to grow a pair.

The audience is not the point. The content is. Both were offensive. How many Hispanic individuals typically listen to KLBJ-AM, anyway? Probably very few. How many gay guys make a habit of logging onto the HCA's website for the latest, most intriguing and entertaining training videos? Probably very few. Which is why they can get away with it. Also, the offensive language was almost exclusively in Spanish. Coinkydink? Probably not. But the HCA is not a prominent organization like KLBJ-AM/Emmis. I'm not even sure a lot of people even care about the HCA. Dissove it tomorrow, would anybody notice? Turn KLBJ-AM's tower off tomorrow, would anybody notice? You decide, on each one.

You found nothing wrong with the Association's "Safety" video or demeaning stand towards Gays and Lesbians? Typical.

If you'll reread my last post I was addressing the reach of a website versus a broadcast station. The content issues had already been well established by earlier posters.
