The Tournament of Roses Parade

I don't know why it has to be so frustrating every year.

CBS finally got it all figured out and then they dropped it. One year Doug Davidson admitted they missed some floats and went back to show what we had not seen. I recognized one float I had seen as they were saying they'd be back but weren't describing it.

ABC stayed with the parade two hours, but NBC dropped out after 90 minutes in past years. I saw at least one entry I had missed on ABC during that last half-hour.

I always believed they weren't showing the end because CBS would go 30 minutes longer. Today they had the "Missing Man" formation to end the parade. ABC and NBC both showed it.

ABC kept doing interviews and behind the scenes stuff, and they wasted time talking about football (the only purpose of which is to provide two floats, two marching bands, and cheerleaders in sexy outfits), but I noticed on one or both networks they'd show floats that had gone by a long time ago. They just don't tell you when it's not live. I still don't think ABC showed all the floats, and I know NBC showed a float as they said they'd be back and never described that float. I never saw that float, I don't think, on either network. NBC at least didn't leave the coverage other than for commercials except for a hockey preview.

I wish it didn't have to be so frustrating going back and forth between TVs. I did get different perspectives, though, and Al and Nancy told some bad jokes. I didn't think I want those, but now I believe I prefer that to the professional job ABC's commentators did. It was the other way around.

I know ABC didn't show but one equestrian unit (except possibly before I got there) plus the Clydesdales pulling Olympic athletes. The Mexican guy with the rope tricks was only on NBC.

I recorded both networks with TiVo. It's a good thing I did because I ate spaghetti for lunch and that's messy to clean up. Making me quite late. Anyone appearing in the parade should have done the same, because there was no guarantee you'd be on either network.

I was terribly impressed by some of what I saw on the parade today. But I must say that even less impressive was ABC's discussion about "the very powerful message the parade was sending to donate your organs".

So, the whole idea behind a parade is to send a message? Who knew? It's gotten totally out of hand and beyond surrealistic and bizarre when a parade is all about a political message.

I should have the word "not" in there. I was NOT terribly impressed....

ABC
NBC
Travel Channel
Hallmark Channel - Live 11AM-1PM Then Repeated 1PM-4PM (Figure that one out)
TLC
HGTV
Univision en Espanol
KTLA (as always); they show it live commercial-free with repeats all day.

I can't make a big deal about ABC promoting football during the parade. The Rose Bowl, one of the biggest bowl games around, is on ABC later the same day. So yeah, I would expect them to promote the heck out of it and frankly would be shocked if they didn't. Now if the Travel Channel or Hallmark started doing that it might be a bit strange. But not on the network that is actually showing the game itself.

I was watching NBC.

Al and Nancy get two major thumbs down. Mostly Al, though.

When he gets in 3 or 4 bad jokes in the space of 3 hours on TODAY, I can deal with that. But when he's cracking one every 3 minutes, it gets old in a hurry.

Al was probably projecting himself to 'new' viewers who might see him once per year broadcasting the parade and who don't normally see him early in the morning on The Weather Channel or Today. Now they know how annoying he can be in both early morning and late morning/early afternoon. ;D

Nancy is Nancy O'Dell, correct? She just left Access Hollywood a couple of weeks ago. I believe she has a contract with NBC and is a contributor to The Today Show but one wonders if she'll be invited to return for the parade broadcast next year.

Maybe they're grooming her to replace Stephanie Abrams on Al's show on The Weather Channel. ;D

Yep, and WGN showed KTLA's feed live with Bob Eubanks and his female sidekick (who's name I don't recall - sorry). We stuck with that feed and - as always - it was the best. Just covering the parade old-school style is the best way. You see the floats, hear the bands, and get the tidbits of info on each of them.

Funny.....I always thought parades were designed to promote something (rodeo's, travel/football games, patriotic themes/holidays etc.).

And.....donating your organs is a political message?

Caught some of NBC's coverage while spending the holiday with my family. What was Al Roker thinking???That he is the worlds #1 comedian?? Wrong! My grandmother wasn't thrilled with his attempts at humor. I would love to know what his director was telling him. As he mentioned his director on the air several times. I'm sorry, but he is not funny. And was acting like a total juvenile! The female co-host didn't
contribute much either....

That would be Stephanie Edwards, forerunner to ABC's Good Morning America with AM America and former AM Los Angeles co-host with legendary Ralph Story. She was also the longtime spokeswoman for Lucky Supermarket (bought out by Albertsons). She was kind of a big deal on the west coast back in the day.

As far as the parade, KTLA has always been the best presentation. A long standing tradition since it was the first station to air the parade live decades ago.

Pardon the diversion, but a note about Albertson's - they were going through severe financial problems a couple of years ago, and closed a number of their stores in the San Francisco Bay Area. The remaining stores became Lucky Supermarkets again. They haven't hired Stephanie back yet, though...in fact, I don't believe they've done any TV advertising at all.

Was the parade on WGN America? I watched it sans commercials on HGTV (well, taped it and viewed it last night because 1) I worked during the day NYD, 2) had company NYN, and 3)was out of town over the weekend attending my stepfamily's snowstorm-postponed Christmas party).

Unfortunately, I can't confirm whether it was on WGN America or not. Living in the Chicago DMA, we are offered only the local broadcast version of WGN - which takes KTLA's feed of the parade each year. Didn't realize that HGTV was also taking that feed. But it's good to know because it's by far the best - in my view.

So HGTV is still doing it?

I expect they would be the ones to describe statice and onion seed and so on.

I enjoy such trivia, though.

I don't have the money to pay for real cable.

Oh, wow, I do get WGN. something to remember for next year. Maybe for ABC I can take my chances with digital.

I didn't recognize her, but when I went to TiVo for what I missed, that's who it was.

ABC had nothing during those first few minutes that NBC did not. They did show maybe one more equestrian unit than what I had said.
