The Trump Administration rants about ABC News And NBC, Says They Should Lose FCC Licenses

Terrifyingly fascist
Something we have been saying for a decade with this White House administration issue over the press freedom and the comparisons to the Putin Administration treatment of the press.

It's only going to get worse from here, unless something changes. Fast.

I tried warning family just how bad it was going to get, and was called alarmist even by those who detest this regime. Now they’re starting to see it’s going to be even worse than that.

It defies all logic that a press—broadcast, cable, print, digital—that latched onto every stutter, every shuffle step, every little botched word by the previous President is utterly silent as this one sleeps through multiple meetings, spits out word salad that ranges from incomprehensible to downright inane. Bulldozing the East Wing? A Defense Secretary credibly accused of war crimes? A man who seems incapable of any exertion, uses a vile slur, berates female reporters with particular disdain and invites a murderer to the Oval Office? All sanewashed and given a “both sides” treatment as they’re basically glossed over. Jake Tapper writes and endlessly promotes a book about Biden’s fragility and then defends the cheetoh sleeping on the job as perfectly normal.

We have no functional press. We have no functional judiciary. We have no functional Congress.

The No functional press part yes it’s the result of Chairman Carr roles at the FCC scaring the press off with TV and Radio local affiliate license threats, defund CPB is the other and directly controlling the press pool to have certain pundits there is how we got to that point.

If the press runs scared from Carr, they deserve all the condemnation to be heaped upon them. If you want to be a coward, that is your choice, but admit it. Own it. Don’t pretend to be a bastion of actual journalism when you bow down and capitulate in advance.

Keep in mind that "the press" is not one thing. Some journalists work for companies that have other interests besides journalism. Some companies happen to be licensed by the government. It's hard to cover the government independently when it controls whether or not you can broadcast. Under most presidents, that's not a concern. Under this one, it is. There is no precedent to what we're seeing now. So in order to do your job, being a journalist isn't enough. You also have to be a psychiatrist.

I’m aware and for the sake of simplicity use a collective term. We’re all aware there is a sycophantic group now given preferential access that writ large can be considered “press,” albeit with the mother of all eyerolls.

Likewise, it’s understood some outlets are part of corporations with other business units. And frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn, to quote the movie. If you are 🐓 💩 about your other units being harmed, own it. Do not pretend to be what you are not. If you sold out your principles to make nice with a madman, you had no principles in the first place. Just say it. Someone, anyone, needs to be honest about why they won’t do the job of a functional press corps. Instead they acquiesce and still try to pretend that they are not a de facto branch of the government.

Yes, I am aware most outlets said no to the Pentagon’s North Korea-esque “pledge” to abide by outrageous demands. Yay. A hearty golf clap to them for that one performative bit of theater. Now let’s see which of them have the actual ⚽️ 🏀 🏈 to hold Hegseth to meaningful account for blatant war crimes and the Signalgate affair.

Once again, you're lumping the journalists in with the companies they work for. They're not the same thing.

Try to understand the media just tells the people what's going on. If the people don't want to know or don't care enough to be moved into action, then that's the fault of the people. They knew what they were getting when they elected him. The media told the voters what the choices were. They voted him in anyway. Now they have to suffer the consequences. The people get the government they deserve. That's what this is. Perhaps now they'll understand that voting has consequences.

The reason you know all these things the government is doing is because the media reported it. The government didn't tell you. It was the media. They asked the hard questions, and got attacked by the president, but they still asked questions and reported them. That's the extent of what they can do. They can lead the country of horses to water, but they can't make them drink. The people aren't angry enough yet.

Likewise we keep wondering the reasons why the administration controls the press pool directly/ FCC License threats and we have one of the factors here. It’s tied to events happening in the cabinet as in this one and everything else.

Reminder that the FCC itself isn't "going after" Disney and Jimmy Kimmel. AFAIK There has been no investigation started about Kimmel. What we have is an active chairman, who has opinions, and does interviews. But just because he says something doesn't mean the FCC itself is threatening FCC licenses. Perhaps Carr is. But he doesn't by himself have the power to revoke licenses or even approve license transfers. The agenda for the December meeting has been published, and there will be no licenses revoked or people fired.

I think, with everything that comes out of the Oval Office these days, it is easy for those outside the industry to think that if Carr says he wants something to happen, it will. But, unlike the aforementioned occupant of the big white building on Pennsylvania Avenue, he does not have any authority to take action on his own.

And I think it is time to put the discussion about ABC and Kimmel to rest. It is now a footnote in the history of the medium, and quite honestly I do not believe even Carr can make much of it anymore since it has been proven that the "offending remark" was taken out of context and then blown up out of proporion.

True and its one of these I agree with you statements but by the time this gets fact-checked its rife with its crazier than that situations we have deal with in 2026.

In a Christmas Eve rant, the president repeated his calls for networks to lose their "valuable" broadcast licenses because they're "100% negative" about him:

As we've pointed out, networks don't have licenses, and aren't regulated by the FCC. Local stations are free to decide if they wish to become affiliates of networks. They could choose to be independent stations and just run repeats of off-network comedies. For now at least, stations have freedom of choice. In the same way, public stations can choose to air NPR or PBS. There never was a requirement to carry those networks or any networks at all. This is a totally made-up issue.

We need to see the same effects extend to the state capitals when Governors start playing the same tactics we seen in the White House and Pentagon because of the 2026 midterm elections. Also how much of the various state governors press pool will the same press restrictions as we seen in the White House is yet to be verified here.

Now here is Jimmy Kimmel response to the latest FCC. It’s a response to his network being targeted over the “Equal Time Rule” and Chairman Carrs definition of “pro-America” content.

Jimmy Kimmel once again riffed on Brendan Carr, Donald Trump’s FCC chairman, after the agency targeted his and other late night and daytime shows in cracking down on the Equal Time Rule.

On his show on Monday, Kimmel devoted part of his monologue to Carr’s announcement last week that he wanted broadcasters to pledge to air more civic minded programming to honor the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. The FCC announcement called for more “pro-America” and “patriotic” content and, although the pledge is voluntary, the agency made clear stations’ public interest obligations.
“This is the weasel who is trying to keep political candidates off late-night TV talk shows – another plan that backfired spectacularly last week.

“Brendan Carr – is working very hard – to put a price on free speech – and on top of being the President’s little colonel in the war on talk shows – he’s now urging the networks – to air what he calls ‘patriotic, pro-America content’ – to commemorate the 250th anniversary – of the Declaration of Independence.”
