The Trump Administration rants about ABC News And NBC, Says They Should Lose FCC Licenses

good job to ABC for putting their legal foot down and telling Nexstar and Sinclaire to stop pre-empting their programing just because they do not like what the host says.
Nexstar and Sinclair were being threatened with a blank screen instead of college football games by ABC. The announcements by both companies coming on a Friday afternoon before a big football weekend was not a sudden "come to Jesus" moment. Screw with the SEC, you're screwing with the mob.

The FCC is trying to carry out two contradictory agendas at the same time: Go after TV networks and retain sports on broadcast TV. The networks are their friends in keeping sports on broadcast TV, but not when it comes to news and late night.

We keep running into this one on why Trump keeps having an ax to grind with multiple networks and TV hosts via the FCC threats. Here is one of them apparently Trump himself or his family has proposed a Reboot on the Apprentice. Yes it sounds like an old cliche that late night hosts have been saying for a decade about Trump administration treating the White House like its "The Apprentice" but its more literal than we even considered. Like in every case the "North Korea Propaganda" comparisons keep coming into play whenever this happens.

The Apprentice reboot won't be on a broadcast network.

True its Amazon getting the show due to their ownership of MGM and Mark Burnett productions. But the last time that show aired was when the former California Governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was their host but got boycotted because of Trump rants in political rallies and the White House. The proposal has Donald Trump Jr as their host for Apprentice. But Trump Jr has to deal with the same controversies in the White House with Trump Sr.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, an Amazon spokesperson says the show is not in active development and that "any reporting on details of the show or names of potential hosts would be purely speculative.”

“Since our acquisition of MGM, we have had preliminary internal discussions about what’s next for The Apprentice as a property," the spokesperson says.

In 2015, Trump — who served as host and executive producer — departed from the show as he focused on his political career. NBC cut ties with him after comments he made about Mexican immigrants. Arnold Schwarzenegger later took on hosting duties for The Celebrity Apprentice in 2017 for one season before his own departure.

In an interview with Empire at the time, per the BBC, Schwarzenegger argued that an anti-Trump social media campaign impacted the show's ratings when he took over. He also said he'd decline if asked to host again.

"When people found out that Trump was still involved as executive producer and was still receiving money from the show, then half the people [started] boycotting it," he said at the time. "It's not about the show ... because everyone I ran into came up to me and said, 'I love the show ... but I turned it off because as soon as I read Trump's name I'm outta there!'"

I'm hoping that someone at Amazon has noticed that Trump Jr. is sorely lacking in the whole "charisma" thing that made his father a decent host. Jr. was a second banana at best. Ivanka? She could pull it off (maybe), but she seems to be laying low lately. Eric? This is a question Donald himself often asks. "Eric?"

I was thinking if thats the case about rebooting the Apprentice its going to raise the "Conflicts of Interest" issues surrounding the entire Trump family if it goes through. Also a president running a reality TV show and the White House is a bad idea given the reason why the Apprentice was cancelled the last time it was on the air. If Amazon is really serious about rebooting the Apprentice they would have to get somebody not related to the Trump White House for that to happen.

But who would watch an Apprentice reboot now if a Trump isn't involved? It wasn't just the concept of apprentices trying to please a demanding boss that drew viewers to the series. It was the fact that the apprentices were vying for the approval of Donald Trump.

True but then again it belongs in the some things should not be rebooted again type scenario.

At the risk of derailing the discussion even more...

There was a documentary series on Netflix called "Dirty Money," and the episode on Trump had a couple of guys who were involved in the creation of the original Apprentice. To hear them tell it, having Trump as the host and making him seem like a big-time real estate guy in New York was kind of a joke. He hadn't exactly fallen oh hard times, but his offices at Trump Tower were shabby and poorly maintained, there wasn't a "boardroom" that would work for the show, and the man himself was a shadow of what he once sold himself as. He wasn't the jet-setting playboy that everyone wanted to "make deals" with, and they sort of crafted him a new image as almost a parody. The "your fired" catchphrase, the intimidating boardroom, the promise of a coveted job with one of the most successful men in NYC...it was all a fiction.

And while the show was successful at first, it ran out of gas in the subsequent seasons, to the point where it was going to be cancelled after the 6th season and the creators had to come up with a way to save it. Hence, "The (D-List) Celebrity Apprentice." Then that became a victim of diminishing returns as well, and I don't think it would have survived if Trump had decided to keep hosting instead of running for President.

Since the show was cancelled, the TV landscape has changed dramatically, and if an expensive late night talk show on a broadcast network struggles to be financially viable (there's the tie-in to the original topic!) then a reboot of a reality show starring the son of a President whose ratings are in the toilet doesn't exactly seem like a viable proposition, either.

Well...how about elon Musk. I can see it now (in my mind's eye, at least):

COME AND WATCH NOW WHO THAT GUY WHO GOT RID OF ALL THOSE GOVERNMENT WORKERS WILL FIRE NEXT!

I was thinking Jeff Bezos given his ownership of Amazon, MGM and Washington Post can do a show thats "Apprentice Like" but with the same framework as that show if Amazon is really serious about doing stuff like that. Or Andy Jassy Amazon's current CEO could do the reboot. Yes I mean if Amazon is really serious about rebooting a show that means they cannot use the Trumps as hosts because of the conflict of interest issues and boycott threats surrounding the White House in the Trump era.

"Democracy Now," did an interview with FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez today. The transcript can be found at the link below.

The merger dels are discussed as well as Chairman Carr's attempts to go after Disney-owned stations for DEI when he is really challenging Jimmy Kimmel's right to be on the air.

I've said this before but I'll say it again. Should Rebecca Slaughter lose her case of wrongful dismissal in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, it is highly likely that President Trump will dismiss Anna Gomez from her position on the FCC. He wants *nobody* in the executive branch, even if they are required to be there by duly passed laws, who will criticize his moves to silence his critics.

If Amazon wants to do something with "The Apprentice" franchise that would get an audience and a lot of attention, they could package together the long rumored outtakes from the original series. Unfortunately, some of the attention that would draw would likely be from the White House, and since Bezos is trying hard to appease Trump (and not piss him off), I can't imagine they'd be likely to run those outtakes.

Some observations on the ABC filing from Barrett Media:

ABC points out that the FCC isn't applying the equal time rules fairly across all broadcast media. Which is true. There is no such thing as equal time in conservative talk radio. It's all one message all the time.

About time ABC call this out. The FCC needs to respect the first amendment rights and freedom of speech.
From the quoted article BigA linked:

What Remains Unclear: The FCC hasn’t responded publicly to the insinuation that it is unequally applying the current rules.

No s#!t.

Good on ABC for deciding this time around to man the battlestations. Now, hypothetically, what'll happen if the FCC says "null and void" on those eight licenses?

Courts...lots of courts.

Billable hours always wins.

Now, hypothetically, what'll happen if the FCC says "null and void" on those eight licenses?

It would really be unprecedented for the FCC to revoke or refuse to renew any licenses over an equal time issue. The penalty might typically be a fine of some sort. But the supreme court Chevron decision really calls into question if any agency can impose any fine or penalty without the matter being put before a judge. All that does is make things more expensive.

The difference is that the FCC is using taxpayer money to do this, while ABC is using its own private funds. Not a fair fight. That's why a lot of companies aren't taking up the fight. The question the taxpayers should be asking is: Is this a proper use of their money? Or would they rather see this money used to pay down the federal debt?
