The Wave is Back!!!!

I may not be NEW talent, but I can be found in Schodack, New York. I totally agree with CleveRadioInsider. It's been WAY past time for new talent. Ravenna may have been OK on WMJI, but on V107.3, well...And who was that Hanson character? He sounded like Ben Stein, and had the same boring delivery. Perhaps if these PDs wake up, quit hiring their buddies just because they're buddies, and actually try to nurture NEW talent, maybe-just MAYBE, grand experiments like V 107.3 wouldn't have been in vein. However, that's just the way this business is. If you're not somebody's good buddy, or if you don't kiss a**, you'll get NOWHERE, except stuck as a board operator for 10 years. That's why I decided to wipe the slate clean, and pursue something else, Cleve. I volunteer for a scenic railroad in Utica, NY to get the training and experience to work at a Class 1 or Class 2 railroad in the near future, and make some REAL money. I have NO regrets, except maybe I should've abandoned radio after 3 years of getting nowhere...

Ravenna would have been a good central personality to build an AAA-formatted station around. She has the name cache, and knows the format. Hell, she had (until mandatory playlists were forced on all dayparts) the highest-rated airshift on the station. Wouldn't say that about anyone else there.

After that, go hire upstarts from, oh, I don't know, WBWC? WJCU? WZIP? WAPS? WRUW? WCSB? It's not like there was a lack of talent you could get that's angling for their shot at the big time.

--------------------------

Re: Job postings. I have a feeling that they will likely get a few people for weekend slots, but for the most part, all dayparts are close to being filled, if they haven't been already. Definitely for EEOC purposes.

There will be minimal voice-tracking on WNWV, excluding the piping-in of WQMX/94.9 midday voice Lynn Kelly for the evening slot.

Regardless of what many may think I do have a great respect for the air talent of the past in this market but its way past time to groom some new talent. V107.3 was trying to recreate WMMS in its glory days once again. Rocco, Ravenna and Brad Hanson were not going to do that. How did WMMS get successful back in the 70s? They had brand new fresh young talent that wanted to make a name for themselves not 50 somethings trying to hang on to the past. John Gorman was young and hungry, Denny Sanders the same, Kid Leo was a young guy wanting to make a name for himself as well. Guys in their 50s do not have that same passion. Here is a good example for today. Mike Trivisonno packed in his show years ago. He usually cuts out a half hour early every day and replays the first half hour of his show. Bob Frantz while not young(whether you agree with his politics or not) does a much better job and puts forth far more effort as well as Andre Knott and Nick Camino when they do their shows. There comes a point that the passion is gone and you are just collecting a check.

Any DJ saying "That was" and "this is" doesn't make a station. Content does.

People don't tune in to hear a dj say "that was" or " this is ".... Radio listeners tune in for the music....not for some anouncer tp say " this is " or "that was ". That midday girl was a " This is-that was " announcer. Nobody cares about what she ever said. They tuned out ( in the case of the V107.3 ) because the music was so lame.

If she was so good....why did the station AAA tank?

The AAA tanked because of poor management from the top down.

Starting with the trust-fund owners (third-generation Hudnutts living off of the success of their parents and grandparents), to the incompetent general manager, to his poor management and programming selections, and a general allowing the station to be run like a comedy of errors.

Duh.

Thom Mandel and Nick Anthony weren't negotiating with the Hudnutts (and chairman Paul Martin) for over a year for nothing. They saw an opening to get WNWV on the cheap a long time ago. And boy did they ever.

Then why does WNCX double their ratings one month after Maxwell's dismissal across all demos, with a "that was"/"this is" guy (an uncredited Dom "Nard" Nardella)?

Oh, wait. Don't tell me.

They tune in to hear the same 500 song, limited playlist.

Classic rock: everything uninspiring about radio.

Again that is perfectly fine. I respect that about him. He was the best at one time. However, he has had his "time". He has been on the air in this town since the early 1960s. There comes a time when you need to step down and allow another star to shine. You can use Goddard's expertise on the weekends. It is soon going to be 2012. Goddard's role is getting more and more reduced as honestly his voice is getting weaker and he seems at times to not even know when he is on the air. I hate to see a living legend have to be dragged kicking and screaming off the air. Give Joe Tait props for at least acknowledging that his time had passed. I am afraid that Goddard will never realize that.

But then again, Dorothy Fuldheim was literally carried out on a stretcher from the channel 5 studios. (She had a stroke in 1984, at age 91, shortly after interviewing President Reagan via satellite... and prior, still delivered three commentaries on-air every day.)

Only Goddard has had anything close to that iconic stature. Dorothy WAS channel 5, Dick IS channel 8.

It poses a problem for channel 8. Dick is still so well-respected, that, even with Andre Bernier waiting in the wings... they cannot simply force him off.

If Local TV LLC pushed Dick offstage before he wanted to go, he'd get a MAJOR outpouring of sympathy.

He's Dick Freaking Goddard, for crying out loud.

That said, yes, maybe he's lost a step or two at 80 as far as on-air performance. I suspect someone will quietly nudge him into retirement if that continues, and he'll have a year "farewell tour" with lots of accolades. They've already named the street after him.

I have a feeling that isn't in the immediate future, though...

Simple. Content improved. See 106.5 The Lake. Every song is a bona fide hit.
The Lake uses no djs.....see " this is-that was ".

Listeners like their favorite songs, even if they are tired old classic rock songs.
Didn't Maxwell's "talk content" get replaced by "music content" when WNCX booted him ?

Dan Deeley just signed on as morning show host for The Wave. Book it!

Will they DO any outside hiring?

What does " outside hiring " mean?

The way CC & CBS has been firing people the last 5 years there's plenty of competent help out there if The New Wave is looking for help. I like the sound of that...New Wave.....that has a ring to it. :D

It's a buyers market for sure. Rubber Radio wants some folks that will " fit " the format. They really don't need that many bodies.

What no Denny Sanders? How about Betty Korvan? BLF Bash busy these days? ;D

Kid Leo could do " Bookie Joint " and have Bruce Drennan be a guest oddsmaker! :D
Bruce Springsteen has some jazz bootlegs doesn't he? Never mind....they tried that already! :D

while we are at it too lets bring back the coffee break concerts too. Nothing like cutting edge new ideas for 2012. :D

Thats a good idea, but there's no budget for phone lines. Besides, the Agora is a
l-o-n-g way from Akron.

Do you think " Two for Tuesdays " would work? I mean two Kenny G tunes "back to back" might be a little too much?

It was cutting edge in the 70s. Since we're in Cleveland it will be seen as new and innovative right?
