The world has ended

By the headline, I thought boss from decades ago resurfaced. He's grab the teletype paper and drag it to the studio and pretend to look through the stories, then smile and say, 'Dang, the world just ended and we forgot to tell everybody. It was his way of saying to check the AP wire more frequently.

Midwest is a very good small radio company that knows what it's doing. For many years, WIVK's country format went unchallenged. Now Midwest has been nibbling at WIVK's heritage with a classic country station, while Scripps is attacking the younger listeners. The Duke is really growing, and is playing an interesting mix of 70s and 80s country. Not clear if they're making money, but they're drawing enough listeners away from WIVK so that their co-owned AC station can win the ratings crown.

If industry conventional wisdom is right, that classic country station is probably not billing particularly well, but as you say, it's very useful as kind of a "blocking back," running interference for the co-owned AC so that station can say "We're No. 1" to unsophisticated local advertisers who may be impressed by that sort of pitch.

At the same time, IVK hasn't helped its own situation by replacing heritage talent over the last year or so, particularly in morning drive. That being said, the new team is very smart, very experienced, and knows how to solidify the station's base. They just hired an experienced morning show producer, so it's likely that this victory for Midwest will be short-lived. Especially as we head into the summer concert season.

Midwest Classic Rocker WIMZ nipped WIVK in the overall 12+; someone in the know posted on Facebook that Opie Joe on WCYQ is now the #1 country morning show in town (followed by a binch of commplaints about the team that replaced Andy & Allison on WIVK...I mean Cumulus easily could have plugged Nash Mornings or whatever it's called into that slot). All bets are off if/when the Scripps cluster sells.

I think they know if they had, it would not be competitive in the market.

Tony & Kris are a veteran morning team who were highly rated and award winners at KSON in San Diego. I suspect their goal is to win ratings and awards with them in Knoxville. They're investing a lot to do that.

WIVK seems to be beating WCYQ in practically every daypart. In most demos they’re more than double the audience of the #2 country station.

When in doubt, ask the sales weasels. WIVK’s morning show is still in double digits. WCYQ didn’t break a 5 share.

Today's Country Aircheck has this quote from WCYQ's PD about their morning show:

"We were pleased to see growth in several areas, particularly in younger demos. The Q is now – and for the first time – the No. 1 Country station Persons 18-34 in morning drive (Opie & Carina), and within a share of No. 1 in Knoxville.
