The Zone Returns To Phoenix

I live in la and I stream it sometimes...Not a bad station...I loved what use to be the 101.5 the zone and 103.9 the edge and energy 101.1
So, back when Dave Pratt was doing afternoons on The Zone, this kid they called "Hot Patrick" was...a fan...to put it mildly. He would call in a lot, and even sent a pic of himself in his underwear to Karen Lindsey.

Not making accusations...just saying it's an odd coincidence.

Nope not me...I don't even remember that...I only lived in Phoenix in summer of 2003 and summer of 2004...I do remember when Chuck and vince had there morning show on the edge I remember they a had 12 year old boy call in n they called him cool kid...

It's a shame really. Their playlist is actually really good all things considered.
I want to like this station, but I feel it’s not doing its job with “music discovery.” It’s more repetitive than a lot of the other big AAAs across the country, and not as adventurous in finding new music from up and coming artists, which is a disappointment since this is being helmed by the father of the format. I find myself streaming AAA stations from other markets.

Also, based on its whole “AI infused” concept, it makes it more difficult to break new local music and is not able to have “studio sessions.”

In other words, prepping listeners for KWSS-LP or streaming KXCI or KCRW from out of town. (Since they're probably not going to get the demo that's tuned in to the 90's alt "mold" over on 93.3)

Unless "The Zone" is no longer subscribing, they were a no-show in the latest PPM ratings. The other Zelus stations are still listed. So, has the novelty worn off?

I've been streaming WFUV, KCMP, WRLT, and occasionally WXPN. All have better variety than The Zone. And real human DJs too.

They did show up in the previous two months (February and March) at 0.1, but didn't show up in the period covering the month of April.
One other site that shows the monthly 6+ for free has a 0.1, but Lance has a no-show. Don't know which one is right.

Three of those four stations are non-coms. That may explain the variety. Lightning 100 is basically a hobby station.

This is a format that belongs on a non-com, where the listeners pay rather than advertisers.

My favorite AAA is probably KPND Deer Park/Spokane/Coeur D'Alene. I'm moving to Red Lodge, Montana this summer (middle school science job!) and it's unfortunate that Billings doesn't have an AAA station. You'd think the mountainous community of Red Lodge would benefit from a format like that (as there are several AAAs in the 'ski' markets). Not so much. KMMS 94.7 Bozeman is the nearest one.
The good news is that 99.3 The Mountain (KMXE) is a good classic hits station with a decent mix of late '60s to '80s rock 'n roll.

While there are still quite a few AAA stations in the commercial sector doing okay (KBCO-FM in the Denver market immediately comes to mind), it is not a growing format. Younger listeners are just not into either the variety or diversity of music these stations play, and acoustic-oriented rock seems to be very much out of the window these days.

WRLT feels like a passion project for a wealthy owner, but it's not a "jukebox on shuffle" like other "hobby stations" such as KCDX or KRKY-FM. Not a lot of paid spots, and the ones they have are local mom-and-pop shops. It's a great sounding station, I'm not denying that. I've got to give it to them for running a professional operation, all the way to the streaming provider they use, given the limited resources they have. WDST is kind of the same way, but they do a better job on the sales end.

We don't have any available non-comm frequencies here to make a true AAA work. KVIT tried for about six months in 2022 (and the music mix wasn't bad), but it wasn't a good fit for their mission of being a high school radio station. KWSS-LP is a strange animal. It's not an AAA, yet it's not a mainstream alternative rock station either (yes, I know, it's an LPFM). I'm kind of an audio snob, and it doesn't sound very good audio wise, even on the stream (don't know if it's their music library being ripped MP3s, lack of professional processing, or both).

WXRT is the #1 station in Chicago. KINK in Portland is also doing well, but they "watered down" their playlist to get there.

WFUV's recently-ended weekend show 'The Alternate Side' was essential next-morning listening for me for years. Now, it's often 88 Rewound on WMBR and the pre-rock-era charts from the 50's and 60's.
