I don't even know if they had GMs in 1918.
I don't think that position was even invented until at least a decade after 1918. And even then, most teams did without.
But unfortunately right now Theo has five sore thumbs standing out in this series........Drew, Crisp, Lugo, Gagne, and Dice-K and the Sox are on the verge of elimination. It's hard to overlook.
Yes, it is. I think Theo's rep as the wunderkind GM is pretty tarnished. He botched up the shortstop situation, letting two perfectly capable ones slip away and blowing big money on another, although he did come to Jesus on Renteria and tried to cut his loses. The Lugo deal probably looks worse than it is (his stats, other than BA, are pretty respectable) due to who Theo let leave town. Plus, the arguably best all around player on the team, Lowell, is here mostly by accident. Signing Drew has been a disaster, and the money being paid to him has made re-signing Lowell problematic. I'll give Theo the benefit of the doubt in figuring out that the bullpen was going to have trouble standing up in the post season, but having Gagne even on the roster right now, after he proved to just about everyone's satisfaction that he's a stiff, is beyond explanation.
Dice-K's inscutable look is growing old with the fans (at least this one, who's like to see a little fire on occasion), but opposing batters are finding his stuff very scrutable. If he doesn't learn to pitch inside, he could be the biggest bust in Sox history. Crisp's lack of offense is a bummer, but I must admit I do get a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing he's patrolling center field. If the rest of the team was producing, I think most folks would be happy with him just for his defense.
I know most of the media love him, because he's young and 'cool' (you know, the band and all), but he's become just another front office executive who hasn't made a decent decision in a couple of years. And they're a dime a dozen.
