Theo vs L.B.

And Theo wins!!

I love listening to athletes who played professionally in one sport for 14 seconds think they are an expert in other sports.

I'm glad Theo butch-slapped him.

Thats Funny....I love listening to over-rated babyfaced G.M.'s who ride owners coat-tails from city to city...Everyone thanked Theo after 2004...For What ? All he did was trade Nomar - everyone else was Dan D's doing...And this year he's made millions of dollars of mistakes - Drew, Coco and the 100+ million dollar error -Dice K......Great GM ?,I don't think so...Great Radio...I don't think so...How does any of EEI's dayparts fall into # 1 with such a low 12+ , is it just uneducated kool-aid drinking men 35-60 ?

Let's correct a few things here, first trading Nomar was hard to do but Theo did it and made the team better by bringing in Orlando Cabrera.
Theo also brought in Dave Roberts who had he not stolen the base against the Yankees things wouldn't have gotten going and they wouldn't have comeback to win that series.
Next let's talk about David Ortiz, the true MVP of that championship run, also brought in by Theo.
Curt Schilling, yep, it was Theo giving up his Thanksgiving with his family to be in Arizona to woo Schilling.
Minky, another Theo move same with Keith Foulke, Kevin Millar, Bill Mueller & Bronson Arroyo - again all Theo guys.
Dan "Mr. Roboto" Duquette wrote the big check to Manny and did bring Varitek, Lowe & Nixon to the Sox through the years but don't even try to say he had more to do with the team that won the series in 2004.
Oh and one last thing, I don't have the time or space to chronicle the boneheaded moves Dan committed but i'll throw a couple names at you that stick out the most - Robinson Checo, Tuffy Rhodes oh and let's not forget how Roger Clemens was in the "twilight of his career" when Dan let him walk.
How'd that work out for him?

JD Drew... quite possibly the worst signing in the free agent era for the Sox

thread over. OK, maybe not. He should have kept Cabrera or Gonazalez. He shouldn't have traded for Eric Gagne. Theo has a mixed record at this point

It's way too early to say Dice-K is a bust. After all, Beckett wasn't all that impressive last year. It takes time to adjust.

agreed... it's his first season pitching in the States and he should be able to adjust. He has good stuff

I'll ask the question that will end this thread:

Before Theo, the last GM to bring a world championship to Boston was when?

I don't even know if they had GMs in 1918. But unfortunately right now Theo has five sore thumbs standing out in this series........Drew, Crisp, Lugo, Gagne, and Dice-K and the Sox are on the verge of elimination. It's hard to overlook.

slightly off topic..

it makes me physically ill to hear/read peter gammons fawn all over theo. it is disturbing.

it is even more disturbing that gammons pretends to be an objective journalist.

and obviously theo loves to go on background with gammons and bash players (ie schilling).

to paraphrase stephen colbert....id love to ask peter gammons 'theo epstein...great gm or greatest gm?'

I don't think that position was even invented until at least a decade after 1918. And even then, most teams did without.

Yes, it is. I think Theo's rep as the wunderkind GM is pretty tarnished. He botched up the shortstop situation, letting two perfectly capable ones slip away and blowing big money on another, although he did come to Jesus on Renteria and tried to cut his loses. The Lugo deal probably looks worse than it is (his stats, other than BA, are pretty respectable) due to who Theo let leave town. Plus, the arguably best all around player on the team, Lowell, is here mostly by accident. Signing Drew has been a disaster, and the money being paid to him has made re-signing Lowell problematic. I'll give Theo the benefit of the doubt in figuring out that the bullpen was going to have trouble standing up in the post season, but having Gagne even on the roster right now, after he proved to just about everyone's satisfaction that he's a stiff, is beyond explanation.

Dice-K's inscutable look is growing old with the fans (at least this one, who's like to see a little fire on occasion), but opposing batters are finding his stuff very scrutable. If he doesn't learn to pitch inside, he could be the biggest bust in Sox history. Crisp's lack of offense is a bummer, but I must admit I do get a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing he's patrolling center field. If the rest of the team was producing, I think most folks would be happy with him just for his defense.

I know most of the media love him, because he's young and 'cool' (you know, the band and all), but he's become just another front office executive who hasn't made a decent decision in a couple of years. And they're a dime a dozen.

Regards,
TSB
