Arrival (2001) may have been one of Journey's best albums, but it never broke the top-50 in sales, had no top-40 hits and one single failed to crack the AC top-20 charts. I'd be interested to know how many spins "All the Way" received one year after the release of the single. I've never heard it played on a AAA station.

Steve Perry never wrote any Hits. He only co-wrote them with (mostly) the help of the truely amazing, Jonathan Cain. The truth is, Perry is just a lyrist, at best.
Neal allowed him to put 15 of his poems on "Trial By Fire", an Awwww-ful Journey album, and then fired the Whiney one, when he refused to tour!

Should I list ALL of your spelling errors in this thread? There are quite a few. But I work in radio, so spelling doesn't matter.
I tired quickly of putting (sic) after his errors. And, as you say, there is no spelling of the spoken word.

I think it's because the lyrics and the melody have to match. Lerner & Lowe, Rogers & Hammerstein, Gilbert & Sullivan would not have had the individual success were it not for the other.

That depends on the music consumers' reaction to the change.
As BigA has said, some of these changes are perceived as changing the band to a tribute show, others are perceived as not-so-good and a few keep on doin' it.
While you may decide it also depends on the payola behind the new releases, I'd agree with BigA, again, that the label support in promotion and priority is really the key issue. Today, that means spending on new media, FB post promotion, iTunes and all that.
Westwood One's old "Adult Rock & Roll" format used to spin new songs from core artists. The new tracks would air going into the :50 break with a short front-sell once every three hours. We carried it at the old "Big 106.5" in Jacksonville, FL and, as far as I recall, the only tune that made any significant movement, nationally, was Santana/Rob Thomas' "Smooth".
