They preempted that for this?

And Christmas Day, a lot of stations throughout the country are letting their morning, noon, or even evening news teams take the day/night off.
KIMA/KEPR's only showing 'Year in Review' specials at 5, 6 and 11 on 12/25, CBS Morning News instead of the local news at 6:30. (But it looks like they are doing Action News at 6AM tomorrow? I suppose that will be preempted by something else.)
No news on KAPP/KVEW at night either. KNDO's preempting the morning news for The American Athlete, the Liturgical and Happy Holidays America. Good Day (from Spokane) is not on KCYU either, replaced with 'The Spirit of Christmas' and 'An American Christmas with P.J. Rasmussen', both musical specials.

In Seattle, KCPQ is kind enough to replace everything from 6AM to 2PM with The Yule Log. And that includes trash talk. Kudos! Then they will air 2 or 3 hours worth of Friends reruns (all Christmas episodes) in the mid-afternoon. KOMO and KING's morning news is getting the day off as well, airing holiday specials from syndication instead (like 'Happy Holidays America'). KING has limited news altogether, 6:30p and 11pm only. KIRO's morning news won't start until 6am, with CBS Morning News airing before that. But the rest of the newscasts are scheduled to air.

Now I wish Yakima had their own Yule Log...oh well, it will never happen (albeit the CW Plus stations, including KIMA-DT2 had one a few years ago).

In my home market, there are only two news-producing stations. WWTV and WPBN are running weekend newscast schedules (6pm and 11pm).
WWTV is pre-empting their morning news (4:30-7am) with CBS Overnight News until 6am and then a double run of CBS Morning News from 6-7am. They are also replacing their noon news with paid programming and their 5pm news with a long-form story.
WPBN is pre-empting their morning news (4:30-7am) with Funny You Should Ask at 4:30, a second run of Dr. Phil at 5, and a Christmas liturgy at 6. They're also replacing their 5pm news with a program called "Nashville Holiday Music Special". (WPBN/WGTU normally doesn't air a midday newscast)
WFQX (sister station to WWTV) is listed as airing their normal newscast from 7-9am, but will likely air paid programming in those slots. Their evening newscasts (7pm and 10pm) are also listed as scheduled, but I could also see those replaced by paid programming.
WGTU (sister station to WPBN) has their normal 6:30pm newscast pre-empted by NBA basketball, but appears to still be airing their (pre-taped) 11pm newscast.

In other markets, WNEM is running a Yule log between 9-10am instead of their 9am newscast, but all their other newscasts appear to be running on schedule. WDIV is only running 6pm and 11pm, while WXYZ will only have their morning (starting at 5am instead of 4:30am) and 11pm newscasts (due to NBA basketball). WJBK, which normally runs morning news from 4:30-noon, is only going 7-9am tomorrow. In addition, their evening newscasts will only run 6-6:30pm and 10-11pm instead of their usual 5-7pm and 10-11:30pm.

Christmas is by far the slowest news day of the year (unless a major event happens)

WBIR, Knoxville TN pre-empted tonight's 11pm and the morning and noon newscasts Christmas day.
Some of the noteworthy holiday programming on WBIR includes:

Christmas Eve

8pm - It's a Wonderful Life

11pm - Hunt for History - a 10News Special on the lost historical films of Granville Hunt

11:35pm - Christmas Mass

Christmas Day

4:30am - Heartland Series: Ways of Winter

5:00am - 2018 Christmas Liturgical

6:00am - Fountain City United Methodist Christmas

Noon - Jim Brickman: A Joyful Christmas

4:00pm - Heartland Series: Talk is Cheap

5:00pm - Clad in Big Orange: 1998 Vols Championship Special

Mankato, MN (1 station market...kEYC -1 CBS -2 FOX) tomorrow (X-Mas day) is not having their 6am (showing church service), noon or 5pm (local program). They are showing their 6 & 10pm news along with FOX 9pm news
Also they are pre-empting Kelly and Ryan for a replay of the church service. They are showing K&R at 1:07am

Here in Hartford WVIT the NBC O&O blew out its morning news 4:30AM-7AM. They are also blowing out their 11AM News/11:30AM Local Lifestyle show along with their 5PM Newscas.

FOX 61 the Tribune Owned station pre-empted the 4AM-6AM portion of the morning news in favor of The Yule Log. FOX 61 also ended their morning news art 9AM today instead of 10AM in favor of some Holiday Special. Sister station CW 20, which normally simulcasts the Morning News 5AM-6AM ran True Crime Files 5AM-6AM (it normally airs 6AM-7AM) and ran the Yule Log 6AM-8AM.

The PBS Station CPTV blew out BBC World News at 6AM and CPTV Kids Programming for a Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concerts and a Boston Pops Christmas Concert, along with a marathon of The Great British Baking Show, tho they still have their CPTV Kids logo on the screen.

Woke up to P.J. Rasmussen and 'An American Christmas' on KCYU instead of Good Day. Nice, jazzy music program. Merry Christmas everyone!

An extreme example of 'a news team taking the night off for the holiday' - the ENTIRE Yuma market. Sure, NPG owns everything there, but none of the stations (KSWT, KYMA, KECY or the ABC-5) had/has news today. Just syndicated specials and 'Christmas in the Desert Southwest'. As much as the anchors would appreciate time and a half, I think cherishing the moments with family and friends comes first. Kudos to NPG.

It must have been very briefly because I always remember "Sale Of The Century" being on Channel 36. Here's an oddity from the days when Channel 2 was still the NBC affiliate; it didn't carry the daytime "Gong Show" (Channel 36 did) but did carry the nighttime version Fridays at 7:30. 11 Alive did, IIRC, carry the Bill Cullen "Blockbusters"; it might not have seen the light of day on Channel 2, because "Blockbusters" was on at 10:30 AM, in the middle of Mike Douglas' show on 2.

Somebody mentioned "Press Your Luck" not being carried in Memphis; WSPA/7 Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville didn't pick it up until after Michael Larson's $110,237 win (must have been all the publicity), and at one point turned down the Bob Eubanks "Card Sharks," which replaced "PYL" at 10:30 AM, in favor of "Wipeout." Coincidentally or not, the host of both "PYL" and "Wipeout" was Peter Tomarken. WSPA was good about carrying "Tattletales" at 4; it was usually the only network show airing in that slot (WFBC/WYFF carried "Somerset" at 1 or not at all, and WLOS pre-empted "Edge Of Night"); in fact, before "Tattletales," it was one of a few CBS stations in the Carolinas to continue to carry "Secret Storm" at 4 (WFMY, WNCT, and WBTW also did), even though that soap was doomed.

WYFF did seem to have a hard time deciding whether to air Somerset or not, same thing with The Who, What, or Where Game or the local talk show Today in The Piedmont, it seemed to me they couldn't decide on one or the other. Maybe it's me, but WLOS should had Mike Douglas after Dark Shadows, then 4 would air Somerset, then Star Trek. That would then put Today in The Piedmont at 1, and everything else as normal.

As far as my opinon on the noon slot- As most daytime television experts know, moving a show to 12 noon to help it is like giving a smoker two dozen cases of smokeless tobacco – most stations run local news at that hour, resulting in pre-emptions or odd time slots for the network show. WLOS in Asheville did carry Let's Make a Deal, but that was the last time they clared a show at noon.

WAND (NBC-17.1) Decatur, IL (Springfield/Decatur/Champaign DMA) preempted all NBC ice skating coverage today (Sunday, Jan. 27) for:

11:30-12:30: "Mecum Auto Auctions"
12:30-1:00: "The Auction at Graceland"
1:00-2:00: Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures
2:00-5:00: United Cerebral Palsy Telethon (local only, UCP hasn't had national telethon in about 25 years--in fact, this year is the last year of the local telethon due to online giving)

NBC resumes locally after the 5PM news with Nightly News at 5:30.

BTW, did any stations preempt today's network programming with the 700 Club Telethon?

For all the bad things that have flown out of the Pandora's Box that is the internet since its commercialization and mass adoption -- everything from the weakening of the publishing and recording industries to malware to phishing to cyberbullying -- the thought that we may someday soon be free of telethons gladdens my heart immensely.

I do remember one time when the World Series was going on, But WYFF had to air a ACC game. Since it was a must carry situation, WLOS aired the World Series game...But it was a NBC feed, even though WLOS was a ABC affiliate!

To make more revenue. When they preempt, they make all the advertising money and don't have to split it with the network. Up until perhaps the late 60's, it was not uncommon for network affiliates (not O&Os) to even preempt a network show in prime time to run their own local show, or movie. They didn't dare do it more than once or twice a week, but it happened.

Once PTAR came in(1971) you didn't see network affiliates (not O&Os) preempt a network show in prime time to run their own local show, or movie. Since they were now guaranteed a half hour every night, it wasn't really necessary.

The only preemptions in prime time i remember were either for Billy Graham or ACC basketball. While the basketball games were during winter, the Graham specials were usually only a few times a year(and by the late 90s, Graham didn't bump prime time as much as he used to).

Was WLOS picketed for not airing Dark Shadows? The reason i ask is that they dropped the show in 1967 and re-cleared it in early 1968(very likely because people picketed the station because it was pre-empted for Dennis The Menace, but they later cleared the show in early 1968.

Responding to my own post, i believe the reason why WLOS might have done this was at that time, You Don't Say with Tom Kennedy was airing on 4, and doing very well along with Edge of Night on 7- and 13 felt they could get better ratings with Dennis The Menace, but both YDS and EON kept getting better ratings. At some point, 13 re-cleared Dark Shadows and slowly began to pull even with the other 2. One victim of DS success was Monty DuPuy-his show got moved to Saturdays by 1970.

WLOS didn't really clear One Life to Live until 1976- when ABC expanded the show to 45 minutes. They were showing Flintstones reruns instead, even in 76. I guess because of Another World being pretty big on WYFF- it still was dominant at 3:00. Match Game on WSPA was also doing well at 3:30, so WLOS felt they had to show Flintstones reruns instead. I guess it took it being moved to 2:30-for 13 to clear it. But it put my grandmom in a quandary- she always watched The Doctors on 4, but by late 77 had switched her allegiance to OLTL.
