Third adjacent channel

Hello,

We own a LPFM radio station that became short spaced when a commercial radio station upgraded their coverage. to clear all separations We had to move 6 miles away from our community of license and we are receiving interference from 2 co-channel stations. We are trying to move our station but there are over 10 pending translators applications from the 2003 translator invasion that will not allow us to move with our frequency plus the full power station that we need to protect. The only two things we found was a frequency that can be used in our current location but we are still going to have the same issue of distance. And another channel that didn't have any problems with translators but it will be a third adjacent channel from a full power station. I know that there is a plan for removing the third adjacent channel restrictions but there is no time frame on that. Do you think that a third adjacent channel waiver can be granted? Have you seen any lpfm with one of them?

Thanks in advance!

How in the heck can you cover your COL 6 miles away on an LPFM? Contact the FM branch at the FCC.I understand they have made waivers in certain cases.Do you have an engineer? Don't scrimp on your antenna.

You should not have had to move. The Commission is now granting 2nd Adjacent waivers to allow you to stay on the air at your licensed location. They cannot waive 3rd adjacent due to the existing statute. Assuming your application was in before the translator apps, you have priority under current procedures and policy... at least until you moved.

I know for a fact that the Commission can waive third adjacent rules for any class of FM station. I had it done for WBRS-FM when they moved to 100.1 from 91.7 back in the late '80s. They are short spaced to two third adjacents-99.5 and 100.7.

If all else fails consider using a tower section instead of a pole, etc. Get with a good antenna manufacture and get some normal plots for your frequency vs. the same tower face. Plant it where you want it and enjoy more of your power going back into town instead of the sticks. :) Do you have a 100 watt LPFM or a 10? I wonder if you can go up in height a bit and turn the power down. If you can and have the 100 watt version, you might want to play that game to some extent.

You might want to take a look at www.heywhatsthat.com and poke in your tower height and location and see what you aren't hitting line-of-sight. Of course FM will go further, but at your power level it might come closer to showing you what it really happening. Think of it as a poor man's predicted terrain coverage mapping (if one considers that FM will normally fill in the gaps a bit more than this shows). Do a new panorama then do the visability cloak. The red will be where your antenna can see...

LP recently moved to the other end of the band (more than 3 channels) and also got a waiver for the move. STA granted for the move and operation started while they consider the interference if none. Precedent for the multi channel move.

What made the difference? 265 emails from listeners...and station staff...and friends of the station staff.

I can run a study and regularly file these. I can do a FREE run if you send me a pm. It's easy to look at the options and if you have an internet connection I can join you to the search computer.

Good luck!

City grade for lpfm is the 60dbu. Non commercial service. 6 miles might work based on terrain but the concept of using a tower to not neccessarily have a circular signal is a well known practice that may not be good engineering or bad engineering..just fact of life.

LP's are stautorily barred from 3rd adjacent waivers. Stupid, I know. But the Commission cannot legally issue a waiver where a Congressional Act bars it. They can waive co-channel, 1st and 2nds for LPFM. Just not 3rds.
