This is "Lite" Music?

WLTW 106.7 is really all over the place. I am forced to listen to it in a local eatery, so I haven't been listening by choice. If the same played out disco songs you'll hear on 103.5 and 102.7 isnt enough, over the past week I've heard Shakira "Hips Dont Lie", Fugees "Killing Me Softly", and today I heard Madonna's "Jump". Good for a rhythmic CHR, but this doesn't belong on an AC station. I have yet to hear any of these tunes on the other AC stations, such as WKJY or WHUD.
I guess CC figures that slashing staff and having a playlist going haywire won't bother the listeners. Well, it's bothering me so much I may just eat somewhere else.

I think it's pretty ironic that Lite FM is playing new pop/rhythmic type music such as Madonna's Jump...I don't even think KTU has played that though I may be wrong. I certainly haven't caught it.

It's also pretty funny when they then segue into classic rock such as Boston's More than a Feeling. Certainly not a traditional "Lite" station but the approach has worked for them in the ratings for a long time. I'm not so sure that their success will continue though with their most recent moves.

I have to say as much as it is not my cup of tea format wise I like them, for a "lite" station they have a PULSE. It's not all Chris Deburgh "lady in red" or "weve got tonight" like most wimpy lite/soft ac's. They've got some balls!.

I think the only thing "Lite" about them is their delivery and how the jocks talk on air. Music wise, theyre pretty upbeat.

I guess this can be a new definition of a Lite station? Calm and mellow djs introducing songs?

Before WLTW's Chicago sister station WLIT recently flipped to all Christmas, it programmed "SexyBack" by Justin Timberlake. Not exactly a "lite" song either.

Well remember what you're talking about: New York, and Chicago, both VERY "Urban" markets. Not just in terms of ethnic make up but in orienation as well. So even the lite's lean a little "Urban" or their translation of "urban" which honestly I think is cool. The problem with radio as a whole is that it is so completely white bread and safe, there is something to be said for an edgy station, even if it is the lite station. Also the Justin Timberlake song probably has an ac mix too without Timberland (aka, no black guy rapping in the backround mix) you know how they do!.

::)

"Lite" Music?

I'm always amused by radio critics. You guys whine & complain when they just play the biggest hits, then you holler and protest when they try to add a little variety to their music.

You can't have it both ways.

I agree Oldies, you cannot argue their success at all. I said I think they're pretty hip for a "lite" station. Also "lite" is a positioner more than anything, it allows people to feel comfortable listening in the office etc which is what drives their numberrs!, smart programming any way you cut it whether they play Peter Cetera and Amy Grant or not! ("AWFUL, STINKS")

True. I think what happens is radio folks will take a phrase like "Lite" and define it for themselves as, "well, if they're Lite, they should only this n' that and shouldn't play this or that". Ditto with Kiss- "well, then it's got to be CHR!".

We in radio often forget their definition of those brands is often quite different than the listeners' definitions.

WLTW is just taking advantage of the fact that CBS refuses to switch one of their three last place stations to AC. Without direct competition, LTW can get as hard as they want to, hold on to their base who has nowhere else to go, and add more listeners who might like the bright AC sound.

If CBS switched one of their dogs to "lighter than Lite" the marketplace would decide what type of AC they want to listen to. My guess is that many offices would switch to a softer station My guess also is that WLTW would respond and soften up a little. But we will never know because CBS enjoys having the three lowest rated FMs in NYC.

WEll it is official now: They just cleared that born again nut case with the horrific call in show, Delilah!.

LITE ENOUGH FOR YA?!

Delilah

Her show isn't necessarily my cup of tea but, that being said, millions of radio listeners nationwide love her show. Why is that a problem?

Man, do I agree with you!!! Phew!!! She sucks!!! That girl can talk and talk til you get so sick you turn it off. She is so sweet that it is phony!!! Her music is too bland and boring!!!

I know cause I gave her a shot one week on 101 The Rose, my station out in Lancaster, PA and after that she was off. My mom who is in the target age range for her, hates her too!!!

I say everyone in NYC tune to Christine Richie on WPLJ at night, now that is a girl with "real" talent and she is not a phony!!! She is a cool lady, love her sound!!! I wish she was simulcasted on The Rose every night instead of her!!!

Not a problem at all, I think the show blows and has for years, that's just my opinion. HOWEVER the crux of this thread has been that the original poster questions the station's "Lite" status given their playlist, so Im just commenting that you wanted "LITE", well she is about as lite as it gets, i mean synonymous with "lite ac".

So, they are the cookie cutter lite fm station that he wants, at least at night they are.

Right on, I could not have said it better myself. Since Lite controls the AC "product" in the market, they pretty much can do what they want with the format...which might come back and bite them in the *** in the long run, especially if another NYC station when soft AC. But, again, my faith in CBS Radio flipping one of their crap-shoot stations to compete with Lite is nothing but a fantasy.

Delilah

It's probably OK you don't like her because I doubt you're in their target audience anyway.

As far as their music, I again note the irony of radio critics who blast radio for not enough variety, then turn on a dime and slam them when they hear something they believe shouldn't be on a particular station. And, I would hope Programmers wouldn't conform their stations what radio critics might consider "LITE" or "lite AC".

The great news in all of this is: if you don't like them, don't listen. ;D

Delilah isn't my "cup of tea", but she runs a very successful show.

Remember, pretty much everyone on this board are males and we are not in the target demo.

25-54 women baby! That's where the listeners are! And there are actually a fair amount of male listeners too (I hear them call in sometimes).

Born again nut case. Oh that's really nice Tower. I suppose you agree with Elton John that organized religion should be banned. Millions of women love Delilah. Tower..and I suspect you're not a woman......Lite doesn't even target you. Howard's waiting for you in Sirius.

The World is changing.

I've heard Shakira Hips don't Lie and Gnarles Barkley Crazy. in a grocery Stores "Muzak" system. I don't mean a "jacked up" Muzak system that has many selections. The BASIC "FM 1" station that is supposed to be the shopping Standard format (people who know muzak well know what I mean).these type songs would be taboo about 5 years ago in a supermarket.
