This Is Only A Test

Is 107.7 the Lake testing its music library? Seems some people have been getting screening calls asking what stations they listen to and if they'd be willing to participate in a music survey at a local hotel. Lighten, tighten, brighten. Now if only they do something about the crickets and DJ story time.

Or could it possibly be they're testing country? Hmmmmmm.

This may come as a shock to all the "radio professionals" on this board, but some of us enjoy the non-hyped delivery on the Lake. Gee, what's the matter with us?

PTR

It's been happening all along

Most of the posters on this board have been taking shots at WLKK ever since day one. Conversely, I have been listening to it daily ever since day one and like it just the way it is. Unfortunately, I am in the demo group not wanted by advertisers. I'm considered too old. My mortgage is paid off, the kids are gone, and if I want a new Buick, or if my wife wants new furniture, we just write a check. Never could have done that when I was a prime target...

Wanna be in on the test ?

An interesting point because it speaks to how conventional wisdom in the ad agency realm is missing a hell of a lot of spendable income.

But one other point may be worth raising in this thread. Can we be sure it's WLKK that's doing this research and trying to put together these focus groups? Or could it be some other station that's re-evaluating its music mix?

Come to think of it, which music station probably needs a re-evaluation of its music mix the most? Eliminate the specialized stations that superserve clearly identifiable core audiences, like WYRK, WBLK, WNED-FM and WHTT in Buffalo or WBEE, WXXI-FM and WDKX in Rochester...those stations aren't going to change and probably shouldn't, so they're not going to be rethinking essential aspects of their strategy. Who in each market might need to undertake such an exercise? And which way should they go?

Mike, Mike, Mike... every station tests its music. The Lake has been on nearly two years now and it's likely they simply want to know where they stand and how listeners' tastes may have changed. Lighten up!

I rather like "DJ story time" as you call it, although I do agree with your opinion about the crickets.

Chirp, Chirp

And let's not forget "Serta Sam". Let's load up his pockets with the crickets and send him off on a Viking funeral.

Re: Chirp, Chirp

Not everybody tests their music consistently any more. Research budgets have been slashed drastically since dereg/consolidation. "Safe lists" are used as much or more than primary local research.

I registered & got a call!

I gave a station other than WLKK (hey, I gave them a truthfull response) and was told "the quota for that station was already full". Maybe next time.

Radio Re-evaluation

As to the need for music testing, could it be (one of) those stations that "superserve clearly identifiable core audiences?"

Perhaps WYRK wants to make certain it's music hasn't strayed too far for the core? Maybe WHTT wants to find out if its classic hits version of oldies is in sync with the proper demographic? What if 97 Rock wants to make sure its now deeper music base is on target for the upcoming spring book? Could it be that WBLK also wants to make sure its music mix is wider based? Wouldn't it make sense for any of these stations to be testing its music?

As to WLKK, I don't listen to it nearly as much as I once did, yet it's still on one of my car radio buttons. I seem to have unconsciously tired of it. Curiously, I hadn't noticed until I read this thread. I guess this indicates how much even we "radio fans" overlook (gradual) changes in our listening habits and the subtle changes that sometimes occur until they're pointed out.

In the last week, the most listened to stations while on the road have been WBFO, WTSS, WHTT, 97 Rock, Q107, WNED-AM, WWKB and WGR. I've also listened to WHLD, but find that its programming is uninspiring. Combined with its spotty signal, it's not made much of an impact on my personal listening habits.

Best regards,

Janos Surlikevich

Just got back from the Lake test. A few radio friends and me took it tonight- was really easy to get in- back for night two tomorrow on Niagara Falls Blvd. Doesn't seem like they're going country from the hooks we heard tonight. They had us use a dial control that we turned up and down if we liked the song.
