THIS JUST IN:::: UPN & WB to merge

Low-Power Affiliates vs. Full-Power

> Las Vegas: Personally WB21 is a safe bet for CW. But
> low-powered KTUD-25's luck is about to run out.

That brings the Cincinnati market to mind, as Sinclair's WSTR/64 (WB) would assuredly be the winner there in the CW sweepstakes.

The UPN affiliate in the market is the scrappy, locally-owned WBQC-LP/38, which recently moved UPN from its other LPTVer in the market (now independent WOTH-LP/25).

This will likely mean 38 is forced to be indy as well, possibly shuttering 25 as a separate station...and it would certainly mean that 38 will lose its prime-time only clearance on the local Time Warner cable systems.

Re: The CW logo

I saw very briefly the CW logo, it was projected behind the podium at the news conference. I have looked around for linkable video or a still logo, but haven't found one yet.

It's a blue rectangle with 'THE (small letters) CW (big letters)' along the bottom right in white.

KTXH is a Fox O&O (duopoly with KRIV) which will now have to go indie, while The CW winds up on Tribune's KHWB.

I'm guessing here, but I thought it would be the "C" in the CBS logo and the "W" in the WB/Warner Brothers logo.

It's likely that "WB6" in PHX will become "CW6" this fall-and Fox's KUTP goes back to "TV-45"!

Has anyone seen an affil list for this network for the entire country?

Is this the first UPN affiliate to bail before the end of the network?

...just got off the phone to KQEG-CA/23, the La Crosse/Eau Claire UPN affiliate. They tell me they're ending their affiliation this week, and the CBS affiliate, WKBT/8, will pick up a few of the UPN shows for the rest of the season. They don't know yet what they'll do for the new 2-hour hole in the primetime schedule, but I strongly doubt they'll simply fall back on their other affiliation, FamilyNet; they claim the rest of the schedule will stay as it is, and if so it'd be kinda painful to dump out of "At Home with Chuck and Jenni" at 9:00 Central for "Roseanne," "Elimidate," "Eye for an eye" and "Judge Mathis" ;-) ...
______________

Absolutely agree, but don't forget that many of these (soon-to-be) former UPNs and WBs could go after local/regional sports packages to fill-up those prime time hours, or even take over established contracts from the new CW affils. One scenario, for example, is in Los Angeles, where the Angels over-the-air broadcast rights are up for grabs, after KCAL dumped the Angels for the Dodgers, with the telecasts starting this coming season. FSN West already stated that they're decreasing the number of Angels telecasts this year (back down to 50 a year again, it was at least 80-100 a year the previous two years), especially with Angels owner Arte Moreno saying that wants to start his own regional sports network. Reports I read said that KTLA and KCOP have been in talks with the Angels for a 50-game-a-year package, with either KDOC or KPXN taking another 50-game package, with the remaining 12 games available for Fox and ESPN games of the week. Now with this news, you would think that KCOP (with help from sister network FSN West) could and would wind up with the Angels over-the-air TV package.

With New York and WWOR, maybe they go back to the days of being a "sports superstation", remember they once had in the 1980s the broadcast rights to every sports team in Metro NYC, with the exception of the NFL teams and the Yankees (then on WPIX). However, of course, a lot of teams concetrating their broadcast efforts more towards cable (where they actually make a bit more money, through advertising and subscription rates), the idea is probably a far fetched.

But you maybe have to watch for the (soon-to-be) former UPNs and WBs to become more of a dumping ground (if it isn't already) for unwanted, lower-rated progamming from their duopoly partners.

Please, as our moderator begs, read Scott Fybush's post above. To summarize: In the seven markets where Tribune owns a WB and CBS owns a UPN, Tribune's station gets the CW in four cities (Boston, Dallas, Miami and New Orleans) and in the other three cities (Philly, Seattle and Atlanta) it's CBS' station that gets the CW. All Tribune-owned WB stations in other cities get the CW; I believe that all CBS-owned UPN stations in other cities get the CW as well.

with KSTW getting the affilation for the new CW network, it's kind of interesting to look at KTWB 22 after the merger: with the daytime WB block heading over to UPN, KTWB could start putting some of their shows or some of the shows that UPN 11 currently carries on their schedule but in different time slots. For example: Family Feud currently airs on WB 22 from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM, with no WB daytime block KTWB could put Family Feud on from 3-4 PM or from 4-5 PM, currently KSTW carries Home Improvement at 3:00 PM, Sabrina at 3:30 PM, Bernie Mac at 4:30PM and 5:30 PM and My Wife and Kids at 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, I wonder what the chances are that UPN 11's current programming from 3-5 PM could go over to KTWB or KCPQ or KONG, another example would be that the Seattle Mariners over-the-air broadcasts ar currently carried on UPN 11, if KSTW was tied down with network commitments than KONG or KTWB could concievably pick up the contract.

South Bend IN Market after WB and UPN Merge?

I wonder what will happen in South Bend. Weigel currently owns the WB affiliate WMWB Channel 25 which is a Low Power tv station. While WSBT owns the Digital Only UPN Affiliate "UPN Michiana". After the merge what can we expect in the South Bend market?

I would agree that WUAB will take on CW affiliation. WBNX, being owned by Winston, very well could end up as a Daystar affiliate.
______________

Considering that many of the decisions haven't been made (outside the CBS/Tribune station axis), there is no such list right now.

That would be the most logical way to go, since KUTP pre-empts much of the UPN lineup during the regular season for Phoenix Suns basketball games, while KASW doesn't have much sports at all. Just Phoenix Coyotes hockey, and they only air a few games a year on select Saturday nights.

> Going on a different tangent -- did KSTW show any CBS
> basketball games while KIRO had infomercials?

The answer is, unfortunately, NO, which meant Seattle viewers were not privvy to last weekend's Duke-Georgetown upset, save for the last three game minutes - and KIRO's E/I obligation had nothing to do with it. I'll leave it at that.

Going forward, since the CW will inherit the current Saturday morning kidvid block, I don't expect any such arrangements in the future, either.

I would suspect the answer would lie in how important cable penetration is (which, at this point in time, is the main reason to have a network on a second HD channel but not on analog).

If cable is more important, WSBT wins. If broadcast reception is important, WMWB wins.

There is also the question of whether or not Weigel owns stations in other markets that CW wants to have as affiliates; they could force WMWB affiliation as a deal breaker.
______________

Weigel owns WCIU-TV Channel 26 as their flagship and they also own the CBS affiliate in Milwaukee. WCIU-TV and WGN are friendly rivals. WGN-TV often put it's Cubs (owned by Tribune) and Bulls games it would have aired but couldn't because of WB conflicts, onto WCIU-TV.

WCIU also carried the WB Kids network. But Weigel has his future in low power stations (notably WWME-CA "ME-TV" LP channel 23)
