I put it in quotation marks because I feel that the term is very outdated, moreso than much of the music associated with it. First off, it probably gets associated most with a period that CBS-FM doesn't focus much on (1955-63). Secondly, I feel that it implies that this is a nostalgic format for older people, rather than a mix of timeless classics that everyone can enjoy. I'd wager that CBS-FM and other classic hits stations would prefer the latter image.

The progression was quite slow, actually. At their inception in 1972, they focused on music that was 8 to 17 years old at the time, while at the end of their original run in 2005, they focused on music that was 25-40 years old. I'd say we're pretty lucky that they're still willing to go all the way back to 1964, and even earlier once in a while.
But again, all this is just a natural evolution of what started as the oldies format.
