Thoughts on Hot 101.5

A better product than what they had? OK... I'll agree and say your personal "product" is probably better. And if you say you update and manage your shifts from home then that's great. You sound like you're as dedicated as ever. But you're not everyone. There are plenty of examples of voice tracking where this is not the case. I DO listen to out of market stations and I hear it. I'm simply not a fan. Just my personal opinion.

As for the original topic of this thread... Clear Channel is feeling the heat. Admit it.
 
I'm chiming in a little late on this one but I really enjoyed 101.5 back when it was WUSA, I also think they used to go by W101, of course this was about 20 years ago when I lived in Tampa.
 
There's never a perfect world Bill. I'm basing things on the pros I work with and we're all very dedicated because we still love and have passion for this business. As far as heat..hell yes there is and frankly ABOUT TIME!! I will never back away from competition because it makes you better. We've had 3 different Rock stations trying to take us out for years. My entire post/rant was not aimed originally @ you BTW. I think if you read the posts prior you would see that :)

W101 (WIQI) and (WUSA) was on 100.7 a fantastic great station I loved to listen to. Bob and Judd, and Bobby Rich and some other jocks that I can't remember right now. 100.7 is now MIX 100.7 and 101.5 is HOT 101.5
 
Frankly I have NO thoughts on Hot 101.5....

96.1 - Radio Whitfield
HD Radio
XM satellite
and once in a while, throw in some of Bright House's music channels..

Pretty much all I need....for now anyway...

I believe you may be confusing 101.5 with 100.7. WUSA and WIQI W101 were actually on 100.7 [formerly WDAE-FM, WAVV and WJYW] while long time religious WKES occupied 101.5 until that frequency was sold to Paxson Communication in 1997 becoming short lived WILV Love 101.5, WFJO Jammin' Joe and WPOI The Point.

The last time I checked, Big Rig wasn't calling the shots at Clear Channel corporate on staffing decisions. If you want to blame someone for the overall decline of available on-air jobs in the radio business, blame the politicians who passed the Telecom Act of 1996, which allowed for massive media consolidation and the mega-companies that presently own the vast majority of major market FM radio stations in the United States.

The reality is that Big Rig happens to be enough of a pro and is talented enough to be able to handle voice-tracking duties for multiple markets and pull it off seamlessly. He's very good at what he does, and it's to Clear Channel's credit that the company recognizes his skill and utilizes it the way it does.

As for local vs. voice-tracked, if your material is compelling and your delivery is strong, I've found that where you produced it from is ultimately immaterial to the vast majority of the listening audience. To point, Howard Stern aired in Los Angeles on a three-hour delay during the 20 most valuable hours that KLSX had every week: 6-10 a.m. PT M-F. And, despite having a massive spotload, Stern found great success there. Why? Because his content was compelling enough to keep listeners tuned in, even though it wasn't live, and even though he did his show all the way across the country.
 
So this not really a CHR war like WQAM v.WFUN in the olde daze. This is Cox which prefers no personalities at all to CC who voice track the whole day except AM drive. This is really HAL v. HAL.
 
FLZ is LIVE mornings, middays and nights. Afternoons has KANE voice-tracked. Which, Kane is a market vet since 1998 and is very well know. And his show is HEAVILY catered to Tampa since he knows the market too well. You have no argument. People don't care about voice tracking. Period. One day, you are going to stop using that as an argument. It holds ZERO water in todays radio. none.

I thought Rat Boy and Stay Puff? were out of Chicago. Maybe not. I certainly agree that today's CHR audience most likely does not care about voice tracking or where a show comes from. My daughter is of the MTV generation and listens to Mix, 933FLZ, and Hot. I know she doesn't care a rat's boy about any of this stuff. But I am a true dinosaur and remember the jubilation on the air as WCFL went CHR in the Spring of 65 and LA had a 4 way AM war with KHJ coming out on top. I can remember Cousin Brucie going head to head with BMR in NYC. So EXcuuuuse me. I remember Belushi and Akroyd too with Steve Martin in checked pants. Hell, I remember Mort Sahl and Lenny Bruce. Now it is bedtime. Nite Time for evenings on the Dove with Wilson Pickett.
 
I know this is the PPM era. However do people really prefer robotic-drones and music over live people and music.

I'm 21 years old. However I can remember radio stations that used to have live personalities. However that was when I was still in Elementary School. Radio was much more enjoyable back then. You had people on the radio that related to the tunes. Not these personalities that work for the Cox in a particular city and VT shows for almost every station in the cluster. Or in Clear Channel's case a national personality that makes Canned shows for stations all over the country.

Rat Boy n Stay Puff are LIVE in FL. They do a weekend voice-track show in Chicago FROM Tampa.

I remember Stern getting fired from WWDC for a joke about the Air Florida crash and going to WNNNNNNNBC. I remember Bob Dayton fired from WABC for a Hiroshima joke. Personality radio used to be exciting
 
CC jocks are really good, the PC jocks for the most part are top-notch as well. I hate PC though. Why? Because the jocks say to "call-in" and "request your song now" and the phone will ring busy and busy. It doesn't make them look like their show is that popular, just pisses the listener off and they'll call the crosstown competitor who's live and local. Happens all the time here in Dayton with Channel 999 vs. live and local Hot 1029. There is absolutely NO WAY to state your opinion on the music or requesting a song. I see listeners post all the time on PC stations' Facebook pages for songs they should be playing but PC is so slow on music and the rotations are extremely tight.

I support the CC jocks and I rather listen to a out-of-town voicetracked show than a national PC show with no flavor. If I was in FL, I'd listen to both Hot and FLZ but probably Hot first because I love Cox CHR's. The imaging and music is always up-to-parr. FLZ has the heritage, great personalities, and mixshows, though. Who knows if Hot will hurt FLZ but you have to respect the competition. I wish someone would take on WNCI in C-Bus... well-programmed, well imaged, #1 station. Florentino and Cage do an excellent job. WCKX had them on their toes when they were rhythmic, but eventually flipped back to Urban. ???

The point is, I love a CHR war and if I'm a GM/PD looking for a format and I see a corporate-based CHR station that needs some competiton, as long as I have the signal, I'm going in for the kill. Look at LA..... AMP is keeping up with KIIS. And in Detroit, AMP beat Channel 955.

CC really lost a lot of my respect with PC, but they have #1 stations for a reason. If they improved PC and made it like Dial-Global's Hits Now with a live 1800 number and live jocks to take calls, plus a wider playlist, I'd listen to it all the time.

Oh, and to say that listeners can't tell, I know many listeners who listen to WDKF now and know that the jocks don't live in Dayton and are not in that studio. WDKF used to be a live and local rhythmic-leaning station with callers, contests, and more... it's not hard to tell the difference. Hopefully with Drake back, we'll see some improvements.

Just my two cents.

Stern was morning guy for DC-101. He supposedly called the airline for a one way trip after one of their planes landed in the Potomic River.

He was not fired for that. But was hired for WNNNBC following D.C.

Stern was morning guy for DC-101. He supposedly called the airline for a one way trip after one of their planes landed in the Potomic River.

He was not fired for that. But was hired for WNNNBC following D.C.
