Thoughts on John Gambling's Show?

I like Joe Bartlett, and JJ is pleasant to listen to doing traffic/weather. But the show drags, and Gambling sometimes comes off like a know it all jerk who is resisting the urge to yell "DAMN KIDS GET OFF MY LAWN" at any given moment.

CC will keep the show around, if only because what else would they put in it's place?

It's the one cash cow WOR has, ad Clear Channel always likes to have a cash-cow morning show on all its big signal talk AMs in morning drive.

What will be really interesting is how they handle the declining appeal and aging demos of their major syndicated talk shows. They'll probably continue to air those shows (which are captive and add no cost to the overall corporate bottom line because they're all captive properties).

What will be even moe interesting is how WABC, which stands to lose a lot of those shows within the year, responds. Lew Dickey's recent remarks about how much these shows including Limbaugh are costing Cumulus in places like NYC and Chicago, signals that WABC won't miss these shows if they lose them. If it's true that Limbaugh (to use one example) is losing advertisers and costing Cumulus money, their bottom line might benefit even from a lower-rated but less costly local or second-tier syndicated show.

I think this show is boring, just like Imus' Show. Thoughts?

I disagree completely. Gambling is at the top of his game.

The show covers a variety of issues -- including local ones -- not just political strategy. Gambling has the innate curiosity and life experience to tackle issues from a unique, often personal perspective. He's well informed and interesting. JJ Kennedy is a real pro whose soft-spoken sense of humor is rare in this age of strident, giggling females on radio.

The show is fast paced but not "tabloid" and -- with the exception of "Bumper Music Fridays*" -- there's no unnecessary schtick, music and phony, gratuitous put-downs that bring Imus' show to a grinding halt.

I think Gambling's show might be the best talk show currently heard on NY radio. I hope it stays.

*Gambling has no taste in music and plays the worst crap from the '70s! That stuff is why I abandoned listening to music radio for talk radio back then. Please, John, stop playing DJ! "When in doubt -- leave it out."

Joan Hamburg commands more money per spot (and clients love her live reads) than Gambling does in her timeslot. She is the cash cow at WOR with John being the 2nd calf it seems.

Either way, I bet Gambling stays simply because there is nothing else to put in that slot aside from moving the show from 5:30A - 9A when Beck makes his eventual return.

John Gambling sounds good. I guess there was some personal friction when Gambling left WOR,but it's nice he is back on WOR. When Gambling left the first time, that signaled the end of the Gambling dynasty..John B,John A and John R.

Gamblings show is local. Imus is not. It's nice to have a local talk show in AM Drive. Curtis Sliwa at WNYM is too harsh for my tastes. He really needs Kuby back.

Gambling is a little dry, but you can't compare using the word "boring". Imus isn't boring, Imus is horrible, dottering, wheezy, old, spacey and generally sounds irritated that there's a radio show going on around him.

Gambling is at least in control of his program.

Boring is in the afternoons on WOR. Dave Ramsey into Gov. Patterson. Yaaaaaaaawwwwnnnnnn.....

He's a pro and the show is well run. It's not a one topic per show kind of situation and topics vary. I think it's a good morning show and it is LOCAL...and local doesn't mean someone in NYC discussing the same topics Rush does all the time! You hear local topics discussed that you hear nowhere else! I suggest that if you don't find a particular topic or guest interesting then the wait to something else is not long.

I don't listen to Gambling or Imus at all now. I used to listen to him and Imus for a few minutes.
I consider them both boring.

Those two shows are as different as night and day. What do you consider "interesting?" Hit songs played over and over and over and over? Just curious.

Would he have that job if he wasn't part of the family?

Probably not, but that doesn't mean he isn't the best guy for the job. People end up in various jobs for a variety of reasons. Job performance is what matters ... how they got there is irrelevant.

He is not the best guy for the job if he isn't beating a 70 year old Imus.

It'll be interesting what CC does with WOR when they officially take over.

I've heard Gambling a few times in the past. He reminds me of the Peter Griffin character from Family Guy.
