Thoughts on KYW NewsRadio 1060

Any general comments the news format and programming on KYW-AM 1060?

Yeah, it's news. Has been and will be for a long time. ::)

Seriously? Isn't this the 4th thread on KYW you've started in the 3 weeks?

...Agenda?

Who could guess what impact at this point? What would the approach be? What kind of marketing would it have to support it? It's impossible to fashion a reasonable guess without significantly more information.

WWDB had essentially noimpact..but was it because it didn't have enough time to take hold? Was it just a bad fit flowing into a talk format? Was it not properly executed? Or is (was) there simply nothing that would put a dent in KYW?

Yeah WWDB flipping formats the day of the 2000 presidential election that wasn't decided until a month later...They were really committed to that morning news format..If I recall they had some really good people on it..Pat Farnack, Earl Bailey, etc.

Yes, Pat Farnack who was on KYW and now at WCBS and Earle Bailey formerly of WMMR and now on Sirius XM Deep Tracks. It was a good news alternative to KYW but it did not dent KYW.

Julius wants WCBS here instead of KYW. He has internet access so, listen to WCBS online at cbsnewyork.com and the rest of us can listen to KYW as is on 1060 AM, 94.1 HD-2 and online at the new cbsphilly.com (as they say on the radio).

And what if they'd stuck with it? Would that have suddenly been the key to taking hold? Would people have said, for a month, "Hey, instead of checking my headlines where I'm accustomed to, I'll check out that new show I haven't tried yet?" It's possible a little goosing to the talk portion of the schedule would have helped the morning news numbers....but what about after that buzz died down? Back to where they were? It's easy to joke they had bad timing in hindsight, but all it likely could have done was delay the inevitable.

WWDB FM had incessantly bad mono audio on FM. It was a strange sound the was carried over from the Dolly/Billy Banks era. It only actually sounded decent when they switched on the stereo carrier and processing chain on for the Sid Mark Sinatra shows. Otherwise it sounded like an old FM, in perhaps the phasitron transmitter era. In fact worse. It wasn't pleasant to listen to.

The only way an FM news station in Philadelphia would make any kind of dent in KYW's ratings would be if it were KYW-FM.

I wish KYW were on one of the stronger FMs in the area. I find plenty of places where the interference with the AM band is strong enough in my car that KYW becomes unlistenable. It's the only AM station I listen to anymore (I'm not a fan of either 610 or 1210's programming).

Or, alternately, another FM station in Philly can do a format with traffic every ten minutes around the clock. It could be another all-newser, or it could be like NJ 101.5's weekday or weekend format. I don't care as long as I can hear a traffic report clearly when I'm on the road.

Curious to hear from other people: Is it just my car's radio, or do other people find that KYW completely disappears due to static in center city Philly when travelling through certain areas?

I find that it is a problem when traveling on local roads and under power lines in both Chester County and Camden County. Whenever I'm under PSE&G wires or PECO wires, buzzzzzzzz. Almost makes me want to get an HD radio in the car just to hear KYW on FM. If I miss traffic on the 2s due to static, I listen to traffic on the 4s on Sirius-XM.

Personally, I don't think I could stand listening to that stupid teletype in stereo. If they were to ever move to FM, get rid of it already! The shut-ins it appeals to will learn to cope!

Sometimes does it to me when I'm under Delmarva Power wires. ;D
