Thoughts On The New 102

Interesting though that a lot of those stations are playing a re-mixed version of that Gotye tune....which has been #1 on WBWC's top 5 list for a long time. The rest of that Gotye album is very good too btw. Didn't Q104 play Mumford and Sons?

I believe they used to play "Little Lion Man," but not anymore. It's one of those songs there that came and went on Q.

Speaking of WDOK and The Wave, I just noticed on 107.3's FB page that Nancy Alden is going to fill in on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10AM to 2PM. Perhaps this is the start of possibly more gigs for her at the station.

WDOK sure has evolved since the days of playing elevator music. There is a commercial for WDOK from April 1989 in this video from WKYC. Fast-forward to about :42 to get to the WDOK commercial.

Neat little ad from back in the day for WDOK.

The stuff that they played then (Striesand, Neil Diamond, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Mathis) is the kind of thing heard today on...umm...WLEC 1450 in Sandusky.

WDOK had a great format back then, and perfect for the landscape at the time.

WQAL was still easy listening, WNWV was a Satellite version of The Wave, WMJI was still a gold-based AC, and WLTF (now WHLK) was a Contemporary-based AC.

Things have changed a lot since. WDOK is WAY different now after evolving several times since '89.

I will say WDOK was magical and cool back in the 90's. From Soft Favorites to Soft Rock, they've managed to stay successful no matter who's operating the station. Does anyone remember they had a bear as a mascot briefly?

Exactly when did WDOK 'come out of the elevator'? Wasn't it sometime in 1987? IIRC, WQAL came out of the elevator in 1990.

It was in 1987, the same year Art Modell and Al Lerner sold the station to Tom Embrescia, Tom Wilson and Larry Pollock. Sue Wilson soon came aboard as Program Director.

BTW, I've been listening to 102 lately and I've been hearing more 2000's and today songs, even 1990's. No 1980's and even '70s unless I've been listening at the wrong times. They are sounding more and more like what Q104 was a few years back.

I noticed that on Saturday, too. I heard songs all from about 1997 to currents. I also heard Rhianna's 'We Found Love' twice less than 3 hours apart. Can't they add more songs to their playlist so there isn't so much repetition? Also, I'm curious to know just how many songs are being played on both WDOK and WQAL.

I checked their playlist for today, and there's some 80s and early 90s stuff sprinkled in.

There's some crossover with Q 104 music-wise, but there's enough 80s/90s/early 00s stuff (and select 70s stuff--a la "Margaritaville" and "Dancing Queen") to show clear differences with Q.

There has to be clear differences so they wouldn't sound the same. It does seem there is less and less of the past, and more and more of present being played on the station.

They must be skewing younger to stay "fresh" since a lot of their personalities and syndicated programs who they thought might not have fit - Terry Moir, Nancy Alden, Delilah and Jim Brickman's "Your Weekend" - have left, either on their own or otherwise, or been dropped. Heck, two of their current on-air personalities came from Q104, clearly showing more similarities between the two stations.

I would not be surprised if the 70's are dropped completely and the 80's are reduced more frequently with a more 90's/00's/Now focus for "The New 102." They need a better name though than what they have now.

Better name and better jingle package for sure. I was just looking at Q's playlist from Monday and there is a LOT of overlap between theirs and WDOK's playlist from then ala Adele, Katy Perry, Rhianna, Lady Gaga, Pink (whose same songs get played about 30 songs apart on both stations) I think it's time for the 'no-repeat workday' for WDOK.

The New 102 has a new jingle package I've just heard this week. I personally think it is better than the ones they used since its launch.

Also, Jaci Fox is now hosting 7PM-Midnight on weeknights replacing Liz Leonard, who my guess is on weekends. Just noticed it on their website with both ladies featured on the on-air page.

I haven't heard the, uh, new "New 102" jingles, but the old ones sounded thrown together.

Yes, Jaci Fox is now doing evenings. She had to leave her role as board producer for 92.3 The Fan's "Bull and Fox"...since she's live in both places, and WDOK and WKRK aren't in the same building, she'd have to drive really fast to do both. ;)

Oh, so is she the one we've heard laughing in the background to almost everything Bull and Fox say??
