Thoughts so far on NOW

I'm just curious as to what people on this board think of NOW so far... I have my own opinions but I'll reserve them for now, just want to get a feel of what others out there are feeling about the station, how they would like to see things change in the upcoming year and what they feel WILL change moving forward... any thoughts?

Well, they've managed not to let their DJ's talk dirty to teenage listener callers for about ten months, so there's a start!

I was suprised when they started to hire (expensive?) DJ:s. I figured that it was supposed to be a low-cost operation. Sort of a Jack for CHR but I was wrong. So far there's no proof that the talent has improved the ratings. AMP in L.A did much better without any DJ:s(recently they added Carson Daily).

What impressed me was when they gave mixshow DJ's some airtime, and the Saturday Night Mix sounds great!

yeah, I definitely agree with that. In fact that's the one MAIN thing I like about the station so far. Saturday nights on NOW are slowly but surely actually starting to sound like a dance station on a FULL powered frequency once again in NYC. I think they should bring more of that to the station where they can by adding some cutting edge dance tracks to rotation. Again, I'm NOT asking for them to become a dance station, BUT if they could add some more dance product that could really put them in a better position moving forward (really distinguishing themselves from Z too). However I DO think the station needs to do SOMETHING with the music mix as of now... WAAAAAAYYYYYY too small of a playlist for the amount of repetition they do.

I hope AMP Radio in LA does mixshows on Friday/Saturday nights...

You're kidding about AMP? I'm surprised that AMP didn't jump on the idea since they were out longer, and LA is a dance friendly enviornment too. I heard they just got Carson on the air, and they are still jockless at the moment. But did hear they are doing a great job on the numbers.

If you want that feeling from a CBS based idea, and a sound similar to PartyFM, check out their sister station's HD channel from Baltimore called Mix 2. As of now, let's enjoy the mixshows and let things chill for a while.

Thats what I was thinking, since AMP was the first station CBS switched to CHR I would think they would mix too since NOW and 98.7 AMP Radio Detroit do that.

BTW, does Z100 mix on Fridays/Saturday nights? I know they play mixes of songs, but do they have mixshows?

They used to have them a long time ago (like in the 90s), it was called Planet Z and it happened on Sat nights. I don't believe since then they've done anything as far as mixshows have gone.

I honestly hope NOT! I don't think AMP would do mix shows because that's what every other CHR style station in L.A. is doing, let's remember AMP is supposed to be the top 40 station that is supposed to be making some noise (high profile dj's not talking much, explicit lyrics in songs, commercial free Monday's, just playing the music). Having a mix show would make them just a middle of the pack station. That music you heard on AMP on New Years Eve, that's as far as a mix show you will get from them.

Don't forget about Spinbad when he was on Saturday Nights all night, although it was more of mash-ups he was mixing.

AMP has had Stryker and Booker for several months.
Yeah, Booker doing Middays, Stryker doing PM drive and McCabe doing nights... so LA's AMP is all jocked up (as well as Detroit's AMP Radio.. jocks in every slot, including NOW's Chunky voice tracking the 11p-3a shift on Detroit's AMP)

They should've kept them, or maybe do Saturday night live club mixes like KIIS-FM in LA does. However I was live streamed Z last Friday night, I did hear a mixshow at 9 PM (12 AM ET), but its not really house mixes.

Finally got a chance to stream 92.3 NOW to listen to their mixes, they sound great! This should be a good replacement to Pulse 87/Party FM's mixes. Hopefully this and Nick Cannon's morning show raise up the ratings. Curious to see how the January 2010 ratings were for 92.3 NOW.

We'll find out on Wed. 2/24/10. The survey period will be from Thu. 1/7/10 to Wed. 2/3/10. Maybe too early to say they've plateaued, but...then again, look at WRXP for example, still slowly climbing after 2 years.
For comparison, overall age 6+ numbers from the last 6 reports (24 weeks) for the 3 competing "CHR" type stations:

-For WXRK-FM 92.3 Now:

Monthly share % (8/09-Holiday '09): 2.3 - 2.3 - 2.5 - 2.7 - 2.6 - 2.4

Monthly cume (8/09-Holiday '09): 2,708,100 - 2,707,000 - 2,888,200 - 2,826,700 - 2,820,700 - 2,686,600

-For WHTZ-FM Z100:

Monthly share % (8/09-Holiday '09): 4.6 - 4.4 - 4.6 - 4.6 - 4.8 - 4.3

Monthly cume (8/09-Holiday '09): 4,784,500 - 4,494,100 - 4,645,200 - 4,654,900 - 4,608,900 - 4,398,800

-For WKTU-FM 103.5:

Monthly share % (8/09-Holiday '09): 4.4 - 4.4 - 4.2 - 4.2 - 4.2 - 3.7

Monthly cume (8/09-Holiday '09): 5,067,800 - 4,826,500 - 4,907,100 - 4,725,500 - 4,554,300 - 4,183,400
