haha, Meep.
I don't think myself a Dem, Rep, or Indie really. I see the political parties really as the same devil w/a different mask. This is why my ultimate plan is to move to Canada and live off the land for the rest of my days. With my PS2 and foozeball table of course.
This discussion has me thinking....what does Brad think about all this and how would he handle it? ..jk
If there is a direct correlation(sp) of music in society influencing the actions of that society, then we are in some serious trouble. I always believed that music was a relflection of society, not the other way around. Ex: Music during the Vietnam war. The music didn't start the conflict, the music was a representation of the thoughts, beliefs, and feelings of that generation.
When it comes to Three 6's lyrics, I would like to believe they are writing from a culture/society/generation that we do not understand. People write about what they know mostly (though the imagination is a WONDERFUL thing that humans gain early but are losing due to TV and constant sensory bombardment and it's hindering of the healthy growth of the imagination, but that's a topic for a different discussion). Sadly, from what I have been told, I believe that Three 6 may be writing some of their stuff not out of aggression of society placement, but more for the $$ and the ability to write what they think people want to hear. How can you claim the 'hood' when you went to Briarcrest? That's a conversation for a different time.
I would like to reitterate(sp) that I DO NOT condone the use of harsh words in describing ANYONE for that matter. The worse thing you could ever possibly do is harm a human being in any way.
Voltaire once said, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Voltaire was an optimist (haha)
It seems that every generation's evolvement of music has it's 'rough' trends in style. There will always be pop, classical, etc. It's the 'hardcore, crunk, oi, etc' that we now have to worry about affecting society. The lyrics in the music will decide the actions of the society, not the other way around. Kids will be born, the parents will forget them, and instead of plopping them down in front of the make-shift babysitter(the TV) they will just let them do what ever, listen to whatever, but not say whatever.
See, I can debate from both sides.
Maybe instead of complaining about a person's words, we should attempt to figure out why such hatred is said, and why it is accepted on such a grand scale.
When I was a kid, I was allowed to watch Roadhouse, Lethal Weapon, and Nightmare on Elm St., etc. but my parents took the time to explain to me the movies, why it was fantasy, and how such actions in society would not be right in any way shape or form.
I miss college. I could write a whole term paper about the discussions debated on this board. ....you think anyone does that?
What ultimaty worries me is that 'Freedom of speech' will be you being able to say what ever you want, but in a closed home w/the windows shut and noone else around. Corporations have become the new governement. They may not be able to stop your ability to say something, but they will pull the advertising from the owner of the microphone you are using.
I know you could just go and buy a radio station/microphone...but have you seen the price lately? This is not in the abilities of the average American.
This post has gone on WAY to long. I was not able to get into everything wanted, but that was out of being polite to those whose eyes have to go through all this.
Let's be honest....nothing'll change. We will go about our lives. Next week something else will be in the news, and all this will be forgotten.
Good thing there are 3 stages @ Music Fest. Parents will have choices on what the kids can hear. Just like a dial on a radio.....hmmmm
The soapbox is now open.
