Three venues in three weeks

Drove from Gulf Shores to Memphis today....
t
I was thinking the I-10 causeway across Mobile Bay might be good for DXing. For some reason, I don't think I've ever made a serious attempt to try this site....about eight miles across salt water.

It turned out to be pretty much a bust. Signals blocked on three sides by poor ground conductivity....so nothing of consequence gets up the 30 mile path from the mouth of the bay to the causeway and downtown Mobile. No Cubans, and not much from the Florida Peninsula.

One minor surprise was WEBY/1330. Monster daytime signal along the coast and in south Baldwin county. Almost invisible in Mobile.

Later in the day my highlight was listening to WABG/960 as tipped earlier in this thread. I had this almost all the way from Jackson to Memphis. Great tunes (blues), nice signal, and hard to believe it was only 1kw.

Cyberdad.

With daughters in Baton Rouge and Houston (TX), I take the Memphis to I-10 route several times a year.

Next time through, try for 1360/KFFA in West Helena, Arkansas. Sonny Payne has been doing his blues program, King Biscuit Time, since 1942. Even Dick Biondi has a long way to go to reach 70 years on the radio. http://www.kffa.com/index_temp3.cfm?CustomPageID=169

I never seem to manage to remember to tune to 1360 as we head out of/into Memphis, so don't know if it is even listenable from I-55.

I was thinking of KFFA....but was thinking I might be too far east to hear it. And I don't recall hearing anything of particular interest on 1360 on that part of the drive.

But speaking of 1360, the 1360 in Mobile has a fabulous signal (all things considered). Obviously, it doesn't hurt that the base of the towers (along I-10 near the battleship) are in a swamp and somewhat submerged.

It is, from around Batesville north to the Memphis suburbs. Maybe further with a better radio. The FM has similar coverage but the hills kill it; if you can take MS-35 north from Grenada or MS-3 further in the Delta, you'll get the AM and FM both for a long way.

The AM is of course only 1 kW on the higher end of the dial, so it doesn't punch through like WABG or KXJK out of Marianna, AR (which is a monster for its size), but it's still a good long ride.

Hi guys.... Sorry I haven't had much to update since I arrived in Kansas City (last stop on my trip) on Tuesday. Good news is that I'm on the 20th floor of a 21-floor downtown hotel. Bad news is that the 21st floor is the health club containing the pool and all manner of electric-powered work equipment! Result is a high noise level that's all but impossible to null.

A few of the local signals get through, but that's about it. The gym is closed between Midnight and 5am. So if I'm awake between those hours, I'll take a shot and see if I can come up with something.

Happy to report that my "three venue" trip landed on a high note. On my 11pm run from downtown Kansas City to the airport last night, 1070 was crowded, but with KNX steadily on top of the pile. First, I heard the traffic/weather sounder, then a little after that a positive ID. In all, I had it for about 15 minutes on my rental car radio.

I can identify with that; my week in Baton Rouge and trying to dx from my hotel room was a total bust; only two local stations came in, in the room, no matter what I tried. (1460 and 1550).

If it wasn't for the rental car, there would have been no dx'ing.

It's really a roll of the dice.

Crainbebo made the point a few weeks ago (if I may paraphrase) that only method of hotel DXing is to get outside the building. It's a great point. I also said that I'm usually too lazy/too much of a wuss to do that (although I've certainly been known to do that).

The problem is of DXing inside a hotel is getting worse....but right after that exchange last month, I went on a run of about a half-dozen hotel stays where I had few, if any, problems. Then my luck ran out in a big way these past six nights in Kansas City.

Fortunately, I was able to console myself with barbecue! :)

Yes! The Southerner's best friend...a good BBQ sandwich, or three. ;D
Now, turn around and make a pass up US41, through Georgia. Make sure you stop at Fincher's in Macon, and that world-famous place in Jackson. I forget the name, but just look for the cars and buses in the parking lot.

I may be rolling through Macon early next year. I'll check out Fincher's if that happens. Assume the "secret sauce" is the Georgia/Carolina vinegar-mustard based stuff. BTW, my vote for best barbecue in the South (so far) goes to Dreamland in Tuscaloosa (along with Birmingham and Mobile that I'm aware of). Honorable mention to Greenbrier out in the sticks near Huntsville, AL.

My all-time favorite anywhere would be the long-gone Big John's in Peoria.

(Apologies for the veer).

It's barbecue - no apologies needed (and the Dreamland in Mobile doesn't hold a candle to the one in T-Town.) They've changed some though since the original place burned down. There's locations in Northport, Huntsvegas, and two or three in ATL now.

After trying practically every bbq joint in Memphis I've concluded that the best, to me, is still Jim N Nicks in Birmingham. I drove out to Destin not long ago to eat at that location because I can't find any I like closer to home.

Next time you're on the beach, you might want to check out Moe's. It's in OB on a little strip of land between the Winn-Dixie and the new shopping center with the Publix. Note that they operate a little like the bakeries in small town Europe. Meaning they close early if they run out of product for the day.
