Thursday Afternoon Format

There was a time when many stations had the "Thursday afternoon format". "Hey everybody it's a Thursday afternoon 15 minutes past the big hour of 3 and 77 sunny degrees on the outside". Those days have past, thank goodness, however, radio has stopped doing things that make it special. Sure there is technology that will give you time and temp and satellite feeds, along with voice tracking, sound live, however, time/temp and local info highlight what radio is all about and is unique to our business. Instead of becoming like other sources of entertainment, radio should deal from it's strengths.

The breaks on WVLG in the Villages sound a lot like the "Thursday afternoon" format -- but the breaks have plenty of content in them. I note the pride in the announcers' voices when they refer to the "National Weather Service monitoring station right here in the Villages" -- putting a community twist on basic information.

Also reminds me of every bad jock you ever heard... "I'm (insert name here) it's 77 degrees on the outside and I'll be here until 6 :00...."

Ah, WVLG 640; the Voice of the Villages playing the best of the 50's, 60's and 70's; an amazing and fun to listen to station with a lot of great music and live and local at least 18 hours per day.

If only I could pick them up in St. Pete, instead of Radio Havana (which comes in like a local here). :(

Of course, WVLG has considerable financial backing and is in a somewhat unique situation, but I would love it if the immediate Tampa Bay area could have a station like that, whether it was AM or FM, but if it were to be AM, they would have to have the outstanding sound processing that WVLG has. (or even better employ C-Quam stereo)

I also like their specail weekends that begin every Friday at 5pm. ( one hit wonders; girl groups, etc)

Oldies 108 USED to have theme weekends, but with hardly anyone actually there anymore, I guess it's kinda hard to do that...

Dont the villages also have a LPFM too? I remember going thru there a few months ago, and the LPFM there had a similar format. Also, the villages have a ton of retired radio people that volunteer their time and have fun with a radio station.

Yes, there is a LPFM WVLG; according to radio-locator, it's not the same ownership as WVLG; WVLG is I believed owned by Serior Broadcasting (a subsiduary of The Villages) and the LPFM is shown as being owned by The Villages Chamber of Commerce. I have never listened to the LPFM; my parents don't live in the Villages, but WVLG is one of the stronger AM signals where they live, but too far away to pick up the LPFM.

On another thread, an employee there mentioned that one of the d.j.'s there had a career at WOR and another had worked at either WABC or WLS for years; he mentioned that even though they had retired once, the fact that radio never "gets out of your blood" and it was a natural to work at WVLG.

I used to listen to Oldies 108 all the time, but it seems as though they are only a shadow of what they were a few years ago.
