TicTak takes over 92.3 NOW!

I'm all in favor of trying something like this. Don't think bashing Katy Perry was necessary though. Not that I'm a big fan of hers either, but I generally don't think that insulting music that your target audience likes is a good idea. Otherwise, I'm all in favor of letting the DJ "take over" on occasion.

I think it was a bit tongue in cheek though. He kept saying "old Katy Perry records", and later "old Lady Gaga records". Both artists have only been hot for a couple of years now whereas most of the music heard this past Friday afternoon was from earlier in the decade.
So all in all I seriously doubt people who were tuned into 92.3 Now were offended.

Admittedly I was just going by what was said on here, so you're probably right.

Good! I'm glad someone had some fun and did "break format", even if it was a planned stunt. To everyone freaking out about people not tuning in and hearing the same songs over and over for those 4 hours, thank God someone decided to do some compelling and different radio for once.

It's radio, it used to be fun. Let's get that back in the mix. That's how you lure people away from their iPods...

wonder if such a wacky format could work here full time. Like a CHR-based version of Jack.

If anything this would make a great feature on Friday afternoons.

Radio needs to be progressive and entertaining like this to get people to turn off their I-Pods and turn on their radio. The last innovative radio formats in NYC were Pulse 87, CBS-FM, Blink 102.7, and Mix 102.7.

Actually, the last "innovative format" on NYC radio was Z-100's from '93 through '95, when you could hear alternative rock, hip hop and dance on the same frequency.

And it almost killed them

- Fun, spontaneous and unpredictable radio like this = brilliant.
- Being a rebel, hating on his boss = makes him relatable to 90% of the audience
- People listening were calling/texting friends telling them to listen quick to this DJ going crazy = new cume
- Not knowing what song is next makes them WANT to listen for the next song = increased TSL
- all the 90's and old school hip hop = relates directly to 25-34 females, who feel like radio doesnt play their "jams"
- the whole unpredictability of the show = something no competitor can counter program against if they have no
ideawhen it's gonna happen or what they're gonna play when it does happen.

still don't get it? then there's no hope for you....lol.

If a DJ is being fired, the boss would let them know only after their last show. Otherwise a disgruntled DJ could easily jeopardize the station's license by cursing on air or he could publicly slander someone.

What "almost killed them" was the fact that the music acquired a harder edge by late '95. When they played more melodic alt-rock from bands like Belly and Weezer, the ratings were strong.

There was not much dance and hip-hop being played on Z100 during that era. Much of the focus was on Alternative music.

Z-100 did play a substantial amount of dance and pop music during most of its supposed "alt-rock phase".

as to dance, I recall them playing 3 or 4 records;Another Night by Real McCoy,Be My Lover by La Bouche, Total Eclipse Of The Heart by Nicki French, and Rhythm Of The Night by Corona;
mostly token tracks in the midst of all the grunge(but at least then, Iggy Pop was in rotation, with the Carnival Cruise anthem "Lust For Life",and his duet with Kate Pierson of the B 52s, "Candy"....)

I think it was a combination of things:
1) Q-104.3 became an Active Rock station focusing on harder edged Rock
2) 92.3 K-Rock went Modern Rock in 96
3) The debut of 103.5 KTU that played a lot of Pop, Dance, and Rhythmic/Pop titles
4) Z-100 lost its identity as New York's hit music station by leaning too much on Modern Rock titles
5) Lighter Modern Rock titles started crossing over to Hot A/C radio in the mid 90s. 95.5 PLJ, and Mix 105.1 were playing some of the same music as Z-100

If its all a stunt then they can continue all they want, this is fantastic... im listening and its great. To continue to play the same songs over and over kills me.. this is not what playing to your audience is about!

TicTak can April Fool us every friday all he wants, in fact this should be a lesson for all Dj's. Yes artist do pay for their songs to be play on air but when its over and over and over..damn please no more...!!!!

A lesson learn..enjoy your craft. When money (and it does talk) takes over and your love and joy become less its sad.

The audience are calling in, they dont see it as a stunt so thats good for the ratings and because of that its bringing in high numbers for the show. BUT tomorrow the calls will come in at the 3:00 o'clock hour for the same format..what they wont get is the same show, but instead what they had before that..the daily every 15-30 minute repeated songs.

We need a format that will bring the element of surprise to the fans, capture us, keep us listening to the stations, promote to the masses!

THIS IS RADIO!!
