Time ticking for FREE FM, JACK or BOTH

After the dismal rating for FREE FM here in Dallas could they be on the verge of flipping? Or could the smart moves of Dan Mason that started with Free and now look to continue with the failed JackFM format be coming to DFW?

I would look at the following options for CBS in Dallas:

Live 105.3 flips back to Country to go after both KSCS and the Wolf which are both very vulnerable right now.
Flip 100.3 JackFM to Modern AC to better compliment Movin 107.5 and call it 100.3 "The River."

All types of Rock are dead in DFW...the Rock audience has evaporated over the last 15 years to nearly nothing

Another option is to buy the intellectual property of Casa 106.7 and put it on a full city signal. Goodbye 97.9...Casa would easily double it's shares and enter the Top 5

OR

Buy the Intellectual property from Service or Radio One and move one of those Urban ACs to a full market signal...another Top 5 performer

I can tell you that Radio One or Service is not selling no parts of those stations.....

And you know this....how? In what demo(s,) with a billing-vs-expense ratio of, what?

This won't be the end of radio as we know it. Radio won't go silent because of any loss of "Jack" or "Free FM"

There couldn't be much worse. Or, it could be lots better.

You just won't like it.

We'll just remove you from our listener list. We know who you are.

Enjoy that iPod and might we introduce you to the satellite offerings from XM or Sirius?

Maybe it's a sign of the apocalypse, but I heard the Grateful Dead on Jack last night....

Jack is failing by what standards? Maybe their ratings aren't great, but I do believe they're billing well...

Most of these Jacks actually do bill fairly well, better than their ratings
might indicate.

But, yes, Free FM must die. And, what format do we believe might replace it?
There isn't much (if anything) we don't have here, that's for sure.

Mr. Mason alraedy did something to the JACK FM in New York, flipping it back to oldies, he might do something here too, we'll have to wait and see.

Really? When did CBS flip Jack back to Oldies? Please provide a date.

:)

Here's a thought. They are installing a digital board in the JACK studio here. The JACK studio is empty yet it is bigger than Jagger's studio. If they were planning on keeping the iPod shuffle going at 100.3 I doubt they would put in a new board or leave the studio empty. I have a feeling that you might see Smooth Jazz 100.3 very soon. :-X

Jack-FM is not a problem for CBS locally. They hover just above a 2.0 with very minimal programming expenses.

KRLD is a problem. They hover just below a 2.0 with very high programming expenses.

105.3? Something's going to have to change.

Depends on your point of reference. Compared to the two previous CBS offerings on 100.3--Hot and Wild--Jack compares favorably. But I don't think anyone around town envies JACK's ratings or revenue. And, given the money pumped into its launch, I doubt anyone at CBS thinks JACK has met expectations.

And, yes, it looks like WCBS-NY is flipping from JACK back to Oldies. Funny when you consider that KLUV is number 2 in 12+, but can't break the Top 10 in 25-54 (if you trust David Eduardo's numbers). Sounds like CBS has lowered--ahem, I mean adjusted--its demo goals, if it thinks Oldies is an attractive format again.

Well I'll de darned... I bet the oldies fans in NY are rejoicing this move.

As for KLUV, what I have noticed is they are leaning more and more towards familiar music (well, at least for me anyway).

Used to be I could scan their playlists and hardly recognized anything. Now I recognize almost every song on their list.

You can't compare the 2.0 of KRLD to the 2.0 of Jack.

Try selling news versus Jack. News is a much easier sale. An automated loop of music is hard to sell. I remember a sales guy at a station I worked at (fully automated) trying to sell it. The client was a bank, but they wanted to sponser a traffic report, or a newscast, or something to that effect. They didn't give a darn that they'd be "just another spot" buryied in a stop set.

Of course, Jack is an ideal demo to sell ... but it's a hard sell if you're trying to brag about your programming. I bet KRLD bills very well, despite being only a 2.0.

Asking again- when did they flip to Oldies from Jack in the past few days?

You just did compare the two. Your points are correct but a lot of ad agency buyers just look at the cpm. KRLD does benefit from their qualitative demos but at what price?

Check out the New York board: http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?board=234.0

Looks like the change will happen sometime in the next week or two.

Thanks. I was aware of the N.Y. thread but this guy claimed it had
already happened. Just asking they do their homework before opening
their yap. ;)

Is Mark (Kelly's ex of Pugs & Kelly) still programming JACK FM?
If JACK flips, is he on the beach or will Kelly's lawsuit still factor in his fate and he gets to program the new station?

Or, if JACK flips is the clock ticking on FREE FM oops!!!! I mean 105.3 FM?

Also, does anyone know if Pugs and Kelly got their contract renewed?
