Time to pluck the Rose

It is apparent that there is a big disconnect with the name "The Rose" and what the station has become, A 3.12+ in Lancaster!! Beat by WARM??? Time to change the name or the format.

I think Rose's loss had lots to do with how well LAN did this time. Since CHR is very adult friendly right now, a station like the Rose perhaps should re-think their strategy a bit. I always thought the Rose's name had very little to do with the flower but because of the cities it serves-----the Red Rose (Lancaster) and white rose (York) cities.

But Rose has always bounced back in the fall, especially with the Christmas month.

A year ago, Mix 1067 had a 3.8 in Lancaster. Lancaster was definitely their strongest market. I think the huge gain by SOX and WARM's gain as well can be partially explained by MIX going away. And Classic Hits/Greatest Hits is doing very well nationally right now. Look at Philly & NYC if you need proof of that.

There is no excuse for the Rose's "bounces". There are many markets where the mainstream AC and the CHR are both consistently in the top 3. With agreat calls B signal and heritage that WROZ has, it means: wrong format, poorly executed format or bad image. Maybe all three. it doesn't mean no one likes this station. It just way, way under-performs. No more excuses! This station should never be outside of the top 3 12+ and top 2 25-54 in a less competitive market like Lancaster (as compared to Harrisburg or York). It wouldn't surprise me to find out that Hall is doing a perceptual study right now to see their way forward.

Agree with Rock of Hbg The Rose has obviously become an insignificant music station. Ratings reflect that.

To be in 3 shares in markets you should be dominating is inexcusable!

and for Warm to beat you in your OWN backyard?...

Whose responsible for calling the shots there?

Radio Babe tries to throw us off as to who HE is. Nice try.

I could be wrong, but I wouldn't take WROZ's relatively poor ratings too seriously on just this one occasion, unless these low numbers show up over the next few books as well. Don't forget that WROZ was consistently doing fine in Lancaster, so it is rather unlikely that they suddenly lost about 1/3 of their listeners. I'm no fan of WROZ...in fact, I probably like WARM's music a tiny bit better. Regardless, I think WROZ is a BETTER STATION, hands down. Why? Because they actually understand the word "variety" and they don't repeat songs anywhere near the extent that WARM does. I have a feeling that WARM's (relatively) improved Lancaster ratings are almost exclusively due to the loss of MIX. Some former MIX listeners who can't receive WSOX as clearly probably flocked to WARM for the time being, perhaps because the image of the old WARM was still stuck in the back of their minds. On the other hand, WROZ probably gained almost no listeners from MIX's flip. So while I agree that the Rose is definitely underperforming, I don't think WARM is really doing any better...the 0.4 share difference between the two is really nothing to write home about, especially considering MIX's flip. Neither station is even close to where it should be ratings-wise, so perhaps BOTH stations need to rethink their strategies...

IMHO, both stations hastened their demises by eradicating 70s songs from their playlists. Take a look at successful AC stations like WLIF or WLTW...possibly the most obvious difference is that each of these stations plays much more 70s music than both WROZ and WARM combined.

I'll happily tackle this thread for you.

We did tremendous in target demos in Lancaster for the first two phases of the book. There was a significant drop in the third phase, which actually seems to happen virtually every spring. How to explain it? We have theories, maybe you do too.

Bottom line is that phase is what hurt us the most.

Conversely we had a huge book in York in target demos, possibly the best we've had in forever.

Obviously we cannot provide specifics on this site but if you have access to a book you can check it out for yourself.

So, to those who think we are contemplating major changes, the answer to that would be no, not at all. But thanks for your concern.

Thanks for sharing what you are able to. And congratulations on what happened in York. I imagine that left some people "warm" under the collar.

Growing up with this station as a Soft AC for as long as I can remember it just shocks me that they are playing La Roux and Taio Cruz these days...

Wow!

If they are playing La Roux and Tao Cruz they are no longer anywhere within the "Rose" brand and need to change either the brand or go back to the AC format. They are obviously going after WLAN in a very bad way!

While The Rose seems to be going in a hotter direction, WARM sounds like they are getting back to their roots. John London is back on PM drive and the music is getting softer, without digging up Barbra, Neil, Manilow, and Air Supply. Sounds like they are going for an older demo than The Rose, but remaining contemporary. The branding "Today's Soft Rock" actually fits their sound. It's also great to hear John London back on the air. He is a total pro who is made for this format.

I just checked out WARM and it looks as they are right where they should be: conservative, familiar, and lots of 80s without having to play the "sissy" music. I think this will work well for them, particularly if the Rose continues their path of self-destruction. WARM needs to now just wait. It will take about 4- 6 months to really see the benefit of these changes. They gotta sit tight and stop messing , even if they don't get an instant response.

Gotta agree Rock of HBG...The Rose looks "wilted"...and Warm will continue to dominate them in there own back yard!
with the exception of nights....That's a voice that nobody can compete with!

Radio Babe, THANK GOD you have returned to this board. How was your summer? Did you go anywhere exciting? Have any fun summer stories to share?

The real reason I am replying to you is because we are only a few days away from the start of the Fall Arbitron ratings period. It is clear from your posts on this board that you are an expert and we need your winning advice.

So glad you came back in time. :)

Let's face it our radio station is broke and needs fixed. Let's ignore the fact that we were number one for the first time in probably forever in York (an even bigger market than Lancaster and our competitor's backyard) this past Spring in our target demographic and that the first two phases in Lancaster were also phenomenal in our target demographic. We suck. We really do.

What I am hoping is that you can provide your extremely valuable feedback and help us build Cume and TSL (I know you know these terms like the back of your hand). We also need help determining the music we play. Let's ignore the fact that even most AC radio stations in this country are starting to play songs by artists like Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Nickelback. Clearly we need to bring back Celine Dion and old skool stuff like Air Supply and Bread because it works and today's women in their 30s and early 40s dig that stuff.

I am also doing a lot of research on voice transplants as I have a scary voice. It all started when I finally reached puberty at age 25. Shy of just taking me off the air at night and bringing in a less offensive and soothing voice I am at my wits end trying to figure out how to turn it around.

If you require payment for your services, I believe I can convince the GM to pay you. Just please help us. We are a sorry bunch and if we don't turn things around we may not have jobs.

Thank you and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

I know this is going against popular opinion on this board, but I really like the way The Rose sounds right now. It's positioned perfectly, right in between CHR and AC. It's nice to have a true Hot AC in the area now that Wink has gone soft. Keep up the good work and the Saturday night show sounds great.

I do agree with one point - perhaps a name change is in order. Then again, why mess with the heritage?
