Tis' The Season...for Mexican???/The Team Obit...

Is there another CC AM somewhere in a market where this new sports/news/talk hybrid is already working? (I mean with syndicated out-of-markets included, not like 700 WLW which otherwise comes to mind.)

KOA

Well, it appears KOA is doing it right. Putting sports talk into the drive home. At least then it might be practical. I don't think anyone is going to enjoy talking about sports when they wake up. Especially when it requires enduring Sileo. Bleh. And considering Sports has barely any desireably real share in Orlando, why would you dump out your morning drive time to provide Sports on your only news/talk outlet in the cluster? Last resort? Someone must really like Sileo. Or someone must really think they know how to do News/Talk/Sports, or sell some packages for it.

Hedinger should be doing wakeups. Sileo should be sent walking, and someone else should be doing afternoon drive sports in Bud's existing slot.

And the Dolphins are still being heard on Alternative WOCL FM.... Sigh..

BINGO! They're blowing up two stations for the price of one. The good news is that CC recognized sports is too small a niche for two stations to be viable in the Orlando market -- a message that needs to get through to station owners in other markets with three or four sports outlets. The bad news is they just hung an albatross around 540's neck that could be the coup de grace. Is Sileo that good? Whose pictures does he have in his desk drawer?

With their record they should only get their night games cleared in Orlando... on an AM daytimer! :D

You guys are drawing differences in Spanish language formatting that has not dawned on the Cheap Channel folks at all. They are convinced that Orlando will be as Hispanic as South Florida in five years and have convinced themselves that by doing this they are way ahead of the curve.

They also realize that Orlando isn't as hot a sports market as some of their other ventures up north and figure that out of town teams (and yes they consider EVERYONE outside of the Magic and the Knights out of town, loyalties of the locals don't count) don't have enough leverage to leave them.

this could be vary interesting. wonder how long this will last?
ok, i have one question, 540 has a 50 kw signal but it has real crappy coverage. what's with that? it even get static in areas of altamonte. i think they should move the stick from pinehills to orlando or something. there coverage suffers because of this.

Blame it on Fidel. The Cubans have been interfering with various signals for years in Florida to get even for Radio Marti. Used to be that when 540 did full power tests at night NASA's go teams at shuttle abort sites in Rota, Spain and Morocco would hear them clearly.

It's not the Cubans this time -- unless you count the signals next door at 530 and 550. Mexico has the clear frequency on 540 and WFLF must protect them. The Mexican station is pumping out some insane power that causes WFLF's interference free contour to be as high as 15 millivolts per meter -- meaning you need a really strong signal to be free of interference. Still, I have heard a listenable signal on a car radio at night as far out as Lakeland, which would be in the direction of the Mexico null.

It's official: La Preciosa will replace The Team

This weekend after UCF plays Mississippi State in the Liberty Bowl.

Sunday's Bucs game will be on AM 740; Bucs playoff games go to 104.1 FM. The morning show and PM drive move to WFLF-540.

Re: Death of a radio station

740 The Team died sometime last night. I turned them on this morning to hear a Spanish version of Shocking Blues "Venus". Thanks allot cheap channel, enjoy the 0.3 share you will now get

the hell?
i have 740 on right now and there is a basketball game of ucf on. maybe mexican is not a reality? rotfl now, it wouldn't haven't lasted a day. hahahahahhah that would be funny.

ah ok.
Don't mean to sound like a jerk here but I wonder if 740 will be like KEGL in dalas? they only had there la preciosa format for a year or so. I'm keeping my ears on 740 we got ourselves an interesting one here. and i'll be looking out for spring ratings as well.

Every La Preciosa comes out of a network facility in Salinas, CA. The format is satellite delivered 24/7, with no local shows.

KEGL, the Preciosa station in Dallas, was on for 2 years and about 4 months. It had a different situation in that it had to compete with a Univision Recuerdo station, which beat them in the format (which was originally developed at Univision's KRCD in LA). They did not have sales traction, and lost in the ratings.

In Orlando, they have no direct competitor, even if they are on AM.

oh ok. yes i did some research. I stand corrected on that but wwla is a competitor. they have local programming but they do not have a varry powerfull signal so i think 740 has the upper hand on that.

1680 may have a subpar signal for citygrade, but they reach out a little better than 740 seems to overall because of the directional placement. They both have crappy performance at night. Prospect of moving some sports to 540 helps a little for nighttime listening, but not terribly. ESPN 1060/1080 are writeoffs after about 6-7pm. Sports on WORL won't help, as they have engineering issues with their sound.

Wonder if CC will simulcast this La Preciosa on WRUM-HD2? I swear... If you like daytimer AM Spanish stations, you certainly get your fill in our market. If you don't, well, prepare to invest in alternate programming choices. Even the pirates know they have to hit the inbetween vacancies of FM to actually be heard.

You don't consider WLAA/1680 a competitor of a sort??

Nope. It is a 100% different format.

"Mexican appeal" is not a format. There are many formats with specific Mexican appeal, but many of them do not share listeners any more than AOR and Country would share among non-Hispanic whites.
