TOM KENT on B101

Another thought is something I heard Shadoe Stevens once say. He replaced Casey Kasem back in 1988. You may also remember him as the announcer on John Davidson's HollyWood Squares. Currently he is the announcer on The late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Shadoe said that he was fired from AT40 because he interjected to much personality into the program. They just wanted someone to countdown records without the schtick. Just a toned down straight forward countdown. This is just one example of how management likes to kill creativity instead of encouraging it. So I can understand how it's not always the fault of on air talent to come across as boring. Sometimes that is exactly what management wants. This is also what happened to me. I wanted more personality in my show. Management wanted less. In the end I felt unhappy because of it and I chose to leave. So I think Management should appreciate creativity and reward it instead of killing it. Then maybe radio wouldn't sound so boring these days.

Everyone wants to do it his way, but quitting over creative differences is something that might be justified later in your career when you've established a name for yourself. It doesn't work on your 1st or 2nd radio job. No offense, but you probably did do the right thing as the waters would have gotten rougher for you if you stayed in radio.

Well that could be. I have an interesting past. I dropped out of school at 16. Not the best decision, but once I entered 7th grade I couldn't stand it. It was a struggle to even make it to 10th Grade because I hated going so much. However I was determined to make up for it. I actually received my GED about a month before I would have graduated High School. Not sure how I pullled that one off. I went two Saturdays in a row for testing and passed with flying colors. Then I went to Broadcasting School up in Boston when I was 18. One year of night classes and graduated when I was 19. Five months later I got my first paid radio job (full time on WSAR). Stayed there until I was 20. Then I went to work Master Control at FOX 64. I didn't like it. That's when I decided to make a complete change and just pack up and move to New York. It was my first move away from home and I am glad I did it. Of course I had big dreams at the time. However I worked 12 hour days and didn't even have the time to follow those dreams. That was frustrating in itself. So I returned to Massachusetts and went back to work at WSAR again. They welcomed me with open arms because they knew I was good. They didn't want to lose me in the first place. They made me Production Director. That's when they changed to the format of Talk. They then hired a new PD who was clueless. Long time employees left out of frustration. I soon followed.

I was then offered a few different on air gigs. One in Vermont, One in Connecticut. I can't recall where the third was. Unfortunately they were all distant and I couldn't make the move at the time. I was low on funds and lost in love with the wrong girl. I didn't want to move away from her. Looking back I should have....but you know how that goes. That's when I decided to get out of the business. I started making lots more money doing other things. Lots more than radio was paying me. That's for sure. I think it spoiled me. I love radio and I love Broadcasting. I always have and I always will. But like you said... it's tough these days. I never had a problem finding an on air gig when I wanted one. The offers were there. I don't know if it would still be like that for me. I honestly don't think so. Not these days. I've moved on and as we all know, the BUSINESS has moved on. One day when the timing is right I may just jump back into things and see what happens.

Keep in mind this might not be true.

Shadoe might be more interested in telling the story his way...but it might not have any truth to it. (If I am correct, AT40 was a scripted show...so there isn't much room for personality, per se...)

Everybody has their own little twist on things, but I heard the tape. I've got it somewhere. If I can track down the exact date I'll be able to find it and post it here. But this was the way he explained it.

Oh, I'm not doubting he said it.

I'm just offering that it might not be true.

It's a freakin' countdown show that was HUGELY successful before he took over and successful since his departure. Maybe, just maybe, management knew what they were talking about.

Maybe Management did know what they were doing. I guess it all depends on who you ask. Shadoe didn't seem to think that a little more personality would have hurt things.

It was scripted. A while back there was a You-tube audio clip of CAsey Flipping out on an outake where he was swearing up a storm because he had to go from a very peppy song to a long distance dedication of girls dog dying. If you can find it it is hillarious to hear him F-this,f-that.Calling the writers morons.Funny clip.

To me its all mute..I don't think Shadoe even had a good, funny, or creative line in his broadcast career. Just good pipes.
