Tones passing through lossy compression codecs?

I should clarify the earlier statement: all the tech-related folks with WFMT have been great to deal with over the years - its the office staff and the apparent general confusion that seems to reign there that have caused me grief (unreturned phone calls and email, different answers to same question from different staffers, changes in feeds not communicated to affiliates, blame-game played between staffers when problems arise, lack of com between them and NPR's PRSS, etc.) I have found the uplink folks to be most helpful. Heck, if I was provided with the info they always have, the whole relationship would be better.

I have an old tone/cue switcher and I hooked it up this morning to a syndicated feed on the internet. it was a 64mb/s WMA Stream (windows media audio) that I was very familiar with and the tone cues it sent out and when. I guess it does work. :eek: (it only missed one cue out of 11) In the hour it only missed the :07 after rejoin. :eek:
 
For pop music deep-bass check I always use the Ventures' version of Telstar. It has one reaaally deep and strong note that must be perilously close to 25 hz. Anyone know if that song caused problems with the old 15" reel oldies formats? What did you do if
the music triggers the cue? Punt?

I am surprised the cues don't work better than 10 out of 11, I'd hope it was 98 out of 100.
Maybe with new DSP it is 100%, but subject material would still be a problem unless it was 25 hz interrupted at some fixed rate.
Like a 50% duty cycle on the 25...
But cues are only 1 sec or so, so how else might we encode the 25 hz?
 
One thing Telstar would do to the earlier FM exciters was unlock the AGC if you pushed it too hard. It took a more modern dual - speed loop for the AGC to play it really punched.

Not likely to have been a problem since the source material would have been 25 Hz filtered during the mastering stage, prior to injecting the 25 Hz tone.
 
I'm gonna sample that note, loop it and Fluke it.
 
250 msec file wave sample I count 13 full waves of OOOM meaning 52 Hz... that's not so deep. Did I get the right note?

Measured another spot and counted exactly 12.5 cycles for 50 hz.

Let's see what fluke sez..
