Too bad for CBS...

They unloaded KBKS too quickly. They could have had a go at KUBE with KBKS much like AMP and NOW are having at their respective Clear Channel CHRs in LA and NYC. I have to say, what I've heard and read about these two new stations, I'm impressed with CBS Radio! I'm not a fan of CHR-music but think they are really going at it with old skool CHR wars in the big markets! More so in NYC with NOW calling out market staple and CHR benchmark Z100 saying they're old hat and tired.

It's pretty cool business in such a struggling industry to see these kind of moves. Go, CBS!

Well, don't go too optimistic for them yet! So far they only have one market with the AMP Radio name. There is speculation that down south in San Diego, that 103.7 "Sophie FM" may go to "AMP". Too soon to tell how CBS's new brand name will go. As for the "AMP" radio brand coming to Seattle, don't count on it. CBS doesn't have enough stations in the market to bring it to Seattle, unless they decide to flip KZOK to it, which I don't think they will (And they better not!!). And I don't think they would flip KMPS to that format either. Both KZOK and KMPS are doing well in ratings in their existing formats.

But there's ALWAYS KJAQ......

True, but as we have just seen in NYC, it doesn't have to be a branded station. It doesn't have to be called AMP. It doesn't have to be called NOW (as in NYC). It could be some other hip 3 letter moniker or anything, really. CBS has a format and playlist generally nailed down, but maybe they've learned from troubles they've had in the past with a nation-wide brand, like uhh hmm... FREE-FM?? Heck, they could localize it and call it Rain 96.5...

I like Bong's speculation on Jack though... hmmm will CBS make a CHR move in market 13?

I don't see how it would hurt really. Very odd move that they would give up one of their BEST signals to Clear Channel (Personally, I'd have traded 96.5 instead) But since 96.5 is still in the CBS stable, I think it's time for a change. We already have two JACKS in Vancouver and Victoria, both with live jocks. The Seattle JACK is just a 81,000 watt MP3 player and I think CBS Seattle can do a hell of a lot better than THIS.

Granted, it will be another switch in the long line of changes at 96.5 MHz. But if they actually make a serious investment in it, it might be here for the long haul (or at least a few more years longer than the normal lifespan of any format on 96.5.) JACK is sooo 2003 by now anyway.....

JACK to go CHR would be a brilliant move on the part of CBS. KISS106.1 needed a fresh start but had too much baggage with the name, calls and morning show in my humble view. Unload it to Clear Channel in a multi-state trade and then start anew. A benefit to flipping JACK is it creates more TSL for KZOK. Quite an interesting scenario I must say.

I think it will be a little while before we see any flipping.
MAJOR adjustment? Sure! April 1st is Precurrency
But flipping? nahh Not until PPM has been around for a little bit.

If CBS can pull any decent numbers from JACK in a PPM world
(And the SEATTLE-TACOMA market more specifically ;D)
They'll keep it. NO STAFF. Its money making situation!

Remember, AMP and NOW both launched on channels that had HUGE amounts of
airstaff that got paid big $$ amounts, So obviously a 1 board op per-shift is the "reasonable" approach.

To add to that, the flips are occurring in PPM markets with stations that were proving unable to pull the numbers
Needed to justify the expenses. And I just don’t see a station getting any simpler than our JACK is now!

Now just some fun speculation... other stations besides jack?

Entercomm could take The End CHR (Assuming PPM #'s aren’t much better and Carolla gone)
Sandusky could take 98.9 CHR (if smooth jazz doesn’t work) and combo sell MOViN on the older demo and CHR on the younger

I agree, and doubt there will be format "flipping" in 2009 for Seattle. All the groups are too busy watching their pennies and waiting out the storm. Remember that changing format is an expensive move especially if you have to hire talent. Since there is no money to spend, that sort of risk right now isn't an option.

I'm also willing to guess that 96.5 in Seattle operates with a fairly decent margin by comparison, given the low expenses associated with that format.

Is there *any* radio station in Seattle that can be run cheaper as a CHR?
Just wondering, because that was the motive behind flipping an FM talker to CHR recently.

The quick answer is any station that has expensive talent with contracts that are about to expire, or the larger full time air and support staff but mediocre ratings and revenue. That being said, I don't think there are any Seattle market FM stations that have such poor margins where they would even consider changing formats. Things are tough to be sure, but it's tough everywhere.

Now some of the AM stations are a different story when it comes to poor margins, but you can't do CHR on AM anyway.

The odd thing about that comment, is that Canada tried to launch D.A.B. (Digital audio broadcasting, putting the AM and FM on par in sound quality) but it failed.

Europe seems to like the idea. If it were to become a good idea in the States, there would be room to go CHR on AM.
HD radios were the way to go instead. (In the States)

Regardless, even if AM *could* have the same sound quality as FM, would the Seattle market be able to handle more music stations?

....and dont' EVEN get me started on HD on AM! It's NOT like FM...AT ALL. It sounds more like a bad web feed than "FM Quality". AM Stereo sounded a LOT better. Plus it interferes with adjacent channels on analog tuners like crazy.....

But the D.A.B. radios (Unlike the HD radios) *Do* put AM and FM on par with amazing cd quality sound, it's just no one wanted to spend the money to buy them in Canada.

It caught on *best* in Europe.

Here's what was said about DAB back in the day in Berlin (1995) :

At least all this HD/IBOC/DAB conversation has something at all to do with CBS flipping a signal to CHR... :-\

The sound quality on AM doesn't make up for the adjacent channel interference.

More on the "what if" side of things rather than the "can do" side, but yes it does.

No it doesn't. Talking about HD AM in this thread is as OT as discussing here the most popular coffee drinks ordered by people in Toronto.

As for the topic at hand - CBS ain't gonna flip Jack to CHR. They did what they did in NYC because they saw an opening to launch a competing CHR. No such opening exists in Seattle.
