Too Late Now

OK...my station is the new and first sports talk on FM in the market. We are going against a strong competitor. The competitor carries ALL the local major league teams play by play. The Buccaneers will be blacked out on Sunday due to not hitting the required number of seats sold. Therefore the radio audience should be substantial. So far, The Fan hasn't done any promotion to speak of. If it was my station (and I had CBS type money) I'd buy the remaining tickets and make a big deal about it and give them away on the air. Additonally, buy or trade local time during the televised game. "The Fan cares about you...The Fan"!

Wow! why hasn't anyone else thought about that.........oh wait you actually meant BUY the tickets and give them away.

The Glazers, who really are to blame for the sad state of the team, should buy them then give them to both radio sports franchises and be like "the BUCS care about the fans."

Either way no Buc football on TV thank god for WFUS.

Good idea...in theory. But the bottom line is the Animal if I'm not mistaken has an EXCLUSIVE contract with the Buccaneers, and if that's the case doesn't that mean the the Fan et al have NO association with the Bucs other than a random ticket giveaway here or there (I know 97X was giving away two Miller Lite Party Deck passes).

Going off when WQYK had the Bucs and their rights to exclusivity were so stringent the Animal couldn't even broadcast from Training Camp; they had to do it from one of those tree-cutting cranes outside the fence.

Excellent point regarding contract rights, however, buying a few thousand tickets probably doesn't violate contract terms. Just seems to me that this would be a great promotion for a new station. Sure, it would cost quite a bit, however, imagine the exposure and mileage they would get. Opening day! New coach! New attitude! And guess who made it possible to watch on TV...the new sports talk station in town. Buy local time during the broadcast. If they have a vehicle they could park somewhere near the stadium, and have free tickets for the first so many thousand to stop by. However, as the title says..too late now.

How much would it cost for a few billboards? How much for commercials on local TV? Honestly, I'm not sure how much buying up the rest of the tickets would have cost but if it was comparable, it might be worth a shot. You're right.... you might actually get more mileage, press, and better promotion by pulling a stunt like that. ....And I really don't think Clear Channel could do anything about it. Can't anyone buy tickets if they want? The Bucs shouldn't care. Heck... FOX13 could even chip in and help out. You can bet they want the game on TV right? This idea actually takes me back to the great days of the biz when great minds make things happen without all the corporate overthinking of every little decision on the local level.

Great minds used. Clear Channel alluded to. In the same sentence?!?!?!

Love the idea Frank! I'm afraid the CBS bean counters won't see it as a great idea. I haven't seen any kind of spreadsheet that has a line item for "listener goodwill".

Thanks Mike. Would have been a great promotion to get a new station up and running against a really good competitor. Years ago in Providence I gave a new jock 100 one dollar bills. Took him to the biggest mall and he started handing out dollars to people. By the time it hit the 6 O'clock news a strange millionaire was handing out thousands. My jock was arrested. Next day..we hired the strange millionaire. Could you imagine..the new sports talk station made it possible for the home town to watch the opening game! Man..did they miss a golden opportunity. Somewhere Scott Robbins is shaking his head! Guess those days are over.

Can't give away NFL tix without written consent from the NFL. They have a big legal team that likes to keep busy. EVEN if you buy the tickets, you'd need permission from the league not the team.

The chances are good I will be watching The Game", unless the Rays are on at the same time at which point, I'll be watching Baseball. Unless I get a Tampa Airport ride, at which point, if my passenger wants to watch the Bucs on the way, they can.

All that aside, Ft. Myers' WFTX will be in my cab riding around Sa-ra-so-ta!, just to say, "I did it!" - as I've done the last two years.

How will I do it?

Dear God, Frank, CBS is spending a substantial amount of money ( by todays Florida radio pay standards) on a full time staff for local sports radio, something that before this month in this market had never been done.

My favorite example, as noted elsewhere previously: Instead of Rob Dribble and his goober sidekick Tom Looney "slaving over a hot microphone" for 43 second "sports updates',we've got a live and local group at night, one I wouldn't have minded being a part of.

Let's check the final attendance on Sunday, shall we? This town has long been known for folks who "walk up" at the last minute, and I wouldn't be surprised if they hit 88 to 92 percent full by game time...it just wasn't in time for the NFL.

It's not up to local media to bail out billionaires or severely chastise folks who choose perhaps not to swelter in 90 degree heat or perhaps are up to their necks in debt and cant afford dropping over $100 for a three hour sports experience.

Keep Raymond James, I'll take the roof on the 'Trop, anyday. 72degrees, low humidity, always a game and comfortable with no sun in your eyes.

The days of open air stadiums in Florida is over - if you are looking for locals and not people flying down for the weekend to watch the game.

Don't hold your breath Jeff... I too LOVE the Trop... cool temps.. low humidity.. no worry about sunburn, lightning, rain etc... But I suspect that an OPEN stadium is just what the Ray's organization wants... TOO bad... I won't go then.... just too damn hot and muggy... I just could not enjoy the game in the summer under those conditions...

If the next stadium is open air, we will lose the Baseball team.

Football is only 10 home games a year. If you are lucky, 12. If RJS was domed, it would be sold out. I wouldn't be watching the game as a blacked out game as I type this.

I don't care what people "say" they want, I want to know what they will "pay" for. What they will pay for is shade. If they go to the stadium and pick their seat, it will be in the shade. Why do I say that? Because I have a picture that I took a month ago at an autograph signing followed by an on-field Practice that was rained out after the first 20 minutes of Practice. If you want to see the picture, I posted it on my Facebook page and I will email it if you would like. It is convincingly evident nobody wants to sit in the Florida sun between April and October.

...and as we get the discussion back on track, even after a total evacuation due to one of our usual lightning storms, via NFL RedZone, I saw very, very few empty seats in the Bucs win over Carolina.

They may not buy by Thursday, but it would appear the "walk ups" made up for it.

"Walk ups" are that minor detail that is lost in the discussions with regard to attendance. When I go to any game, sometimes I don't know if I can go until a few hours before game time. By the looks of the gates, I am not the only one.

But, I did enjoy watching most of Today's Bucs game in my taxi in Sa-ra-so-ta!

Yep... I can watch the Buc's ( if I really wanted to) mostly on TV..( Turn my outside antenna to the south towards Ft. Myers if it's a local game) not stand in line going to the bathroom or getting something to eat or drink without missing the best play of the game... and I can sit in my recliner, get cheaper beer, set my own thermostat...and NOT worry about rain, thunder or lightning... OH, I know it's nothing like being there.. but.......
