too many stations with the same format

I'm from Boston, and I would love to know how stations with the exact same format - in this case the Spanish format - are able to survive, especially in this economic climate? [EDIT]

IMHO, at least half of the signals that have the Spanish format are wasted and should be flipped to formats that are American, like, for example, country! :)[EDIT2]

[EDIT2-off topic politics]

Spanish (language) is not a "format" but rather a large variety of formats. I'm sure you would agree that English language is not a "format" either. Given the variety of English language formats, one could logically assume there are a variety of Spanish language formats that could work in a metro with a large number of Spanish language people, such as LA. Spanish Talk, Spanish CHR, Spanish AC, Spanish oldies, etc. are quite different from each other.

Didn't you read Rush Limbaugh's op-ed piece in the Wall street Journal Friday? He said America is blessed with THOUSANDS of radio stations (he emphasized the AM stations) that offer EVERY CONCEIVABLE POINT OF VIEW! You name a format...some profit-seeking radio station (or even donation-seeking stations like NPR outlets and commercial KSCO in Santa Cruz, CA) will meet the demand. Or, maybe not.

When I started this thread, it was in the LA forum, NOT the Boston one. When I read Billboard, it just identifies certain stations as being of the "Spanish format," just like Billboard lumps all "classic hits" stations (such as Eagle/now Mike, WROR and WZLX when it started) as "classic rock." Billboard routinely does the same thing with Cox's 3 classic rock stations in Tampa (WXGL, WHPT and WPOI). At least out of Boston's 10 rock stations, three are listed as "classic rock" (WMKK - great calls for a Disney station - WROR and WZLX), which means all Led Zep, Aero, VH, AC/DC and Hendrix. Another three (WBCN, WBOS and WFNX) are listed as "alternative rock," which means - yes, all Led Zep, Aero, VH, AC/DC and Hendrix. Two (WAAF and WXRV) are listed under the "AOR" umbrella (which includes all heavy metal, mainstream rock and adult rock stations - 'AAF being the most former and River being the last type of AOR), one (WBMX) is listed as Hot AC (it plays the Led Zep, Aero, VH, AC/DC and Hendrix classic rock under the title of "Whatever Weekends"), and the last of the 10 rockers (WXKS-FM - talk about seriously shedding its disco/dance image big time!) is listed as a CHR (most of the music is even harder rock than F-105 was IMHO, and F-105 was such a dependable hard rocker that it played "Stairway To Heaven" every night at 10). Pretty much though, all 10 (with the possible exception of River) are hard rock stations IMHO!

I guess it depends on your definition of "hard rock". Of the stations you listed, the only ones I'd call "hard rock" would be WBCN & WAAF. Kiss 108 is about as mainstream Top 40 as you can get.
Since when are Led Zep, Aerosmith, Van Halen & Jimi Hendrix "alternative"?

I remember F-105 playing Stairway every night at 10!

They also played Funkytown, Captain and Tenille, Glen Campbell, and Abba, so they were hardly a rock station. But definitely a slightly rockier Top 40 (at least by the late 70s.)

Steve, serious question for you: Are you autistic?
I have Asperger's myself, so I'm curious.

I'd say probably a good 70-80% of us (myself proudly included! P=) are at least mildly Aspergic.
Hee-hee, "radio geeks" by definition are undoubtedly aspies!

(BTW, I am not) a R-I newbie: I was registered and posted on the old radio-info.com_(at)_www.ezboard.com (and related) sites——I just never bothered to register here...but have been faithfully lurking, all along! P=) P=) P=)

Since WBCN, which is an alt-rock station, plays those rockers on a regular basis. And since WBOS and WFNX are listed under the very same format as 'BCN, then I'm assuming that they also play Aero, VH, AC/DC, Zep, etc.

And no, I don't consider anything from the WCOZ/F-105 farm alt-rock AT ALL!

Wow. Are you trying to outdo yourself on the stupidity scale?

(sigh) Just to recap, when I started this thread, it was in the L.A. board, NOT the Boston one! I fully understand about the country battle which had no business of even starting back in 1993 when Jesse Helms and Ted Kennedy sat on Greater Media's desire to buy 96.9 FM because its LA station (now Amp-FM) ran Howard Stern, which both politicians hated to death. Geez, I hope none of the broadcast companies ask for a bailout - the government owning any of these companies (hello, CC or Entercom) as well as the airwaves could result in the govt demanding that Howie Carr and/or Dennis & Callahan (or Rush on a national basis) be fired and replaced with Democratic propaganda.

Anyway, rather than start a new thread I'll continue this one because of what I listened to between around 5:55 and 6:20 on WZLX, WODS and WROR.

On WZLX (needless to say, all 5 songs are rock):

Time - Pink Floyd
Who Made Who - AC/DC
?
Tom Sawyer - Rush
All Right Now - Free

On WODS (regular 'ZLX songs denoted with *):

Heartache Tonight - Eagles*
Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay - Otis Redding
My Sweet Lord (He's So Fine) - George Harrison*
Nowhere To Run - Martha and the Vandellas
The Lion Sleeps Tonight - Robert John (escaped from Barry's Lost 45s)
Down On The Corner - Creedence Clearwater Revival*
Fame - Irene Cara
Live And Let Die - Paul McCartney*

On WROR (all but one song are 'ZLX regulars):

You Make Lovin' Fun - Fleetwood Mac
You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet - Bachman-Turner Overdrive
My Life - Billy Joel ('ZLX is only station to play full version of this song; I've done likewise during my time at 'BRS)
Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond (the only non-rock song in this time frame)
Take It To The Limit - Eagles
Amie - Pure Prairie League ('ZLX again only station to play full LP version of this song)

My analysis: WZLX and WROR are BOTH classic rock stations based on the listening. For those who want to argue, Neil Diamond is as much a good fit on WROR the same way certain unspecified types of people are a good fit in equally unspecified Boston neighborhoods. I'm not sure that I'd really call WODS an oldies station anymore, but rather a slightly rock-leaning classic hits station - at least the way classic hits should be heard, and not the way 'ZLX, Eagle (wound up going all rock), 'ROR and Mike (or ridiculously overloaded on rock) wound up going.

BTW, I listened to most of "The Unicorn" by the Irish (really Canadian) Rovers on Magic during this time frame. ;)

What does that have to do with Boston radio?

Seriously, just do everybody a favor and stop posting.
