Too Quiet

This board has been too quiet. I will see if I can jump start it. Is anything happening in my old stomping grounds of the Albany area and Brunswick?

Rick

I was in Albany a few weeks back and can say that there is nothing going on there...and I do not think anything happens in Brunswick anymore. :D

I see not much has changed from when I worked at channel 10 and Fox 31 then. I can tell you that the stations in Macon all sound like dog squeeze. I scanned the dial driving down from Kentucky to Dooly County. What's the matter with those people?!

Wow, nothing ever changes in those towns. You guys should come hang out in the Atlanta market just to watch the fireworks. Hey Kyscott, do I know you? I used to work at Fox 31 also. Ofcourse, that was MANY MOONS ago! We had at least two Scotts there.

I was there from 1993 to 1994 when I left for Macon. I was an engineer that worked with Hugh Allegood. Your name doesn't ring a bell with me, but then again, it's been 15 years ago!

I have been wondering if this is the legendary Clyde Scott? By the way, do you know whatever happened to Hugh? We worked together many moons ago at WALG/WKAK. Last contact I had he was working for Lowell Register.

What's the current format of 97.3 in Albany? They seem to flip every couple years. Is Clear Channel still the owner or is it being sold off? I think the WBGE/WGMK owners could probably do something good with this signal, if they could afford it.

I better shut up because I've probably already said something stupid.

Nope, I'm not Clyde. I'm not nearly as smart! ;D

Hugh is running his own engineering firm out of Macon. I do the same, but I'm up in Louisville Kentucky. (Hence the "ky" in my name). He's married with a couple of kiddos. I took his place with Lowell when I moved back from Nashville Tennessee, big mistake working for Lowell! But I wanted to get back to Georgia after TNN shut down.

His website is http://www.southernwirelesscom.com/

Your name sounds familiar Rick. Did you work at K Country from 1990-1994? That was the time I was in Albany at WALB and Fox.

Clyde is still around. He now does a lot of work for CC and helps me out with my Cumulus stations there in Albany sometimes. He would rather spend all his time on his bluegrass radio station (www.bluegrassradio.org), but Connie won't let him retire. ;D

Hugh has helped me out a few times here in Savannah, but haven't talked with him in a while.

I was there off and on from 1979-83 and from 1985 to 92. 1990-91 was at WGPC.

Gee, Scott, thanks for the back-handed compliment.

At least you didn't say we all sounded like dog DIARRHEA!

Much love,
A Macon dog-squeeze-ologist

Since you piped up, yours must be one of them. I call 'em like I hear 'em. Stations in Macon sound over processed, over modulated and over pumped. I remember WDEN when it was on 105 and John Timms was the CE, was the best sounding station I had ever heard. all they had was a couple of Prisims feeding an 8100 feeding a composite processor. WAYS on 99.1 was a close second.

I spent about 10 minutes scanning the dial and it was back to my XM.

Not that I listened to GPC all that much. Man that was such a waste of signal back then!

ky-jelly,

Yes, I am one of them, as I thought I made clear in the post. I have a handle on this forum, but I don't hide behind it. I'm the PD of WPEZ. It ain't a classical station, so yes, we do actually process the audio a little, since we have to have a competitive signal in the market.

Have you actually listened critically to your precious XM the same way you besmirch terrestrial radio? Do you realize that the bandwidth of the average channel on XM is not even CLOSE to the bandwidth from a decent analog FM? I program a 1kw AM DAYTIMER that sounds better than some of the stuff I've heard on the satcasters. Do you understand that the more channels those folks open up (same with Sirius), the less there is available for the other channels? I've listened with a critical ear to both XM and Sirius (on some SERIOUS audio equipment). Yeah, being able to take a station from coast to coast is nice, but they still generally sound like "dog-squeeze", as you so eloquently put it.

So... enjoy your XM. and thanks for your comments. Of course you're entitled to your opinion about the Macon radio market; but I'm entitled to my opinions too... and you haven't said anything on this board to convince me of anything except that you're a frustrated, crotchety fart who can't find any happiness except in taking pot-shots at others who bust their humps trying to do a good job with the resources they're given. (Hope you get to read the previous rant before the board-police edit it out)

Oh, and if you'd like the help, I can Google a good audiologist for you. It might be time for a hearing exam.

And you're right, John Timms is/was a helluva transmitter jockey. And a helluva nice guy too. I understand he's been dealing with some health issues recently. Hope he's improving.

Cheers!

If you will read my post a little closer, you'll see I was not referring to PEZ as a classical station. I was referring to the format of WGPC in Albany when I worked down there. You need to read a little closer before you decide to jump on someone.

They have an excuse. What's yours?

Judging from your response, you are aware that PEZ sounds like crap. So the question is, why do you not do anything about it? When someone does not have the answers they usually go into the name-calling/attack mode. I did not attack you personally, I said Macon stations as a whole sounded terrible. However the saying goes "the hit dog yelps". You yelped.

Hey Kyscott,

Yes, I left Fox 31 just before you got there. You replaced my Brother-in-law Yukon Ron. He left there and went to South Carolina. I left to go to Cool 103.7.

Hugh is floating around here somewhere, but he'll back me up.....that was a very "interesting" place to work.

Hugh installed the tower for 1690 Air Atlanta. I was busy building the studios, so I didn't get a chance to pop in and say hi to him. We ended up building the second best AM signal in Atlanta. The owners are good at getting great signals.

He's a great engineer. I don't now how he kept the Fox 31 transmitter going, it was a bit cantankerous. I didn't realize that Atlanta has a new signal. Who owns it?

It was new in 2004. They moved it from middle Georgia to Avondale Estates. I was hired away from Sunny 100/WCHK to run it. We started in the basement of the owners. Then we moved to Buford Highway with brand new talk studios, when we got the new tower. In 2006, they sold it to Joe Weber. He now broadcasts bird calls and ecclectic music over the frequency. The station hasn't shown up in the Arbitron since it was sold.
