Top 10 Songs Your Station Isn't Playing

Addicted is #3 callout this week at my rock station. I know two CHR PDs having success with the track, both are Mediabase monitored. I was just using Kiss 108 as an example of a successful major market station that plays 80's. It won't work for everyone. A few years ago I heard WABB in Mobile play "Sweet Home Alabama." It's HUGE there, of course.

I was at WABB when we were playing Sweet Home Alabama. Please, for the love of God, if you're not in Alabama, don't play that song lol. The only reason we did it was because...well...porky, if you ever heard the people that requested it, you would understand :D

Look, I don't think Old Skool lunches are a bad idea, but I do agree there has to be familiarity with EVERY track that you play. Or, maybe, taking what "jamminoldies" said earlier...maybe in a smaller market, do an all request lunch hour, but allow yourself to spike a Def Leppard or a Digital Underground or even "YMCA" if it gets a request. That way it's a very interactive, listener guided segment, and it makes your audience feel more like they're a part of changing up the station.

Also a big fan of the "myPod" idea where you get listeners to fax or email you their 12-song "playlist" for the lunch hour. The playlist you pick wins lunch for two or whatever, and you play all their requests.

How did we get back on the Ol Skool lunch topic in this thread?

I like the "MyPod" idea. It's sort of like what Wally does on Christian station WAY-FM for the Total Axxess night show. Someone does a top 5 list of songs they want to hear and they explain to Wally why they picked the song. I'm suprised very few CHR/Top 40 stations have thought of a format like that. By the way, didn't Z100 New York try a noon countdown show at one time?

some long rambling post from this guy that we've read 90 times before...

This is coming from a COUNTRY PD who called stiffs on Secondhand Serenade (#2 on his sister station's Soo Foo Top 40), Spill Canvas (was #2 on his stations Hot 9 at 9) and Flobots (currently Top 30 nationwide and rising).

Any other "stiffs" you want to call for us?

If phones are an indicator on things...

The only thing that phones are an indicator of is what a VERY VERY VERY small portion of your audience wants. You may be able to judge instant passion on something, or even use them to raise your own awareness on something you either haven't played yet or just began playing, but other than that, phones are barely worth anything. It is a small portion of the audience that is much further ahead of the curve than the majority. With rare exception, it is NOT what the majority of your audience wants.

It would be like programming your station based on iTunes.
